Hi everyone. I joined this list a couple of weeks ago and haven't
seen any activity, so I hope there are a few Canadians out there
reading it.
In any case, I've recently joined the ranks of those constructing an
RV-10 (actually, I haven't quite started yet as 'm still waiting for
my tail/empennage kit to arrive - it's at the border waiting to clear
customs). But I'm interested in learning more about the sorts of
construction requirements that are different from those in the US.
For example, I recently learned that parts riveted or attached
together have to be primed on their mating surfaces. And I kind of
learned that by accident - I shudder to think of what would have
happened if I had riveted everything for a preclosure inspection and
then found out - pretty much everything would have had to been
disassembled to prime between the surfaces that are already attached.
Does anyone know of an online (or other) resource for these sorts of
things I should know before really getting going? I couldn't find
these sorts of specific details in the CARs unless I was looking in
the wrong place..
Thanks!
Dan

Hi Dan
Most of us are on the RV-list and there is very little traffic on the
RVCanada-List.
Be very wary of much of the advice or information you hear/read and if
it is being offered by an authority figure they should be able to
provide a reference.
Transport and RAA inspectors are not always correct or current and may
be offering opinions that they think are valid, however the regulations
are constantly changing. Refer to current regulations or references
(Vans, FAA etc.) when in doubt.
At the present time I am not aware of any general requirement to prime
all attached parts.
All depends on what it is, there are many parts that should be primed.

If that were true many Cessnas would be illegal in this country.
Build it as per Van's recommendations and there will be no major issues to
worry about.
The RAAC manual for homebuilders will be a good guide for the Canadian
regulations to get your project approved.
Priming is always a good idea and to what extent depends on your taste buds

Dan:
I would recommend getting to know your MD/RA inspector, and speaking informally
with him about his recommendations and any "gotchas" he has observed with
builders of similar aircraft. You HAVE filed your letter with MD/RA, right?
Also, the community of RV builders is invaluable. "Hangar flying" with other
RV builders is not only fun, but is also an invaluable source of information
and tips on how to build your airplane. If you're near any major city in
Canada there are bound to be many RV builders nearby. Even in the smaller
communities you may find a builder not far away, or at least someone you can
talk to by email or phone who'll be happy to share his experience with you.
It's one of the biggest advantages of building an RV.
If you're anywhere west of the Ontario-Manitoba border, contact me off-list and
I can probably put you in touch with a builder not far away, if you're
interested.
