Thanks, everyone for the advice that was given with respect to
Canadian regulations while constructing a kit plane.
Having not yet received my kit yet, I didn't know my kit serial
number and so hadn't yet filed my letter of intent with the MD-RA.
However, a quick call to Van's rectified that and my letter of intent
is now filed, though recently enough that I haven't yet heard back
from them as to who my inspector will be. I agree that the best
source of information will be to contact the inspector directly with
questions such as this, since he (or she) will be the one signing
off. And from the sounds of the comments, it doesn't appear as
though he'd mind too much answering a few simple questions like that.
Also, in talking to the head office of MD-RA, they advised that I get
a copy of AC43.13. Though an FAA publication, apparently it is used
as the "bible" in construction on both sides of the border. Of
course, it doesn't address if there are differences in the Canadian
requirements, but it should at least get me fairly close. I obtained
AC43.13-1B online - hopefully it is relatively current.
And you'll probably all think I've been living on some other planet
or something, but despite all of the research I'd done ahead of time
in deciding to go the kit-built route I hadn't heard of the RAA.
I've heard of the EAA and I'm a member of COPA, but somehow the RAA
slipped by on my radar. I've sent an email to them to inquire about
their manual for homebuilders, so I'll see if I can get a copy of that.
