It's been an absolutely great experience so far. David is right - use the postal service at every opportunity. But I'd be very surprised if Van's would be able to do so with the larger shipments like kit deliveries. A lot of people do have large deliveries sent just south of the border and then go down to pick them up personally. But I don't live conveniently close to the border, so I haven't done this. One thing that does work really well though - notify whatever shipping company that you will cover the brokerage yourself. It will require your going down in person to a customs office (which in itself is a rather significant pain - I wish they could just take credit card info over the phone, or allow you to fill out documentation by fax, but they don't), but then you'll only be asked to pay the GST, which you'd have to anyway, and not any of the other significant fees that the shipping companies love to tack on. I can't say the customs people are thrilled to do this (at least in my experience) since being that you haven't likely done it before, you'll be asking them to clarify questions as you're filling out the form, but they have to allow you to do it this way whether they're thrilled about it or not. And when you get to the point of adding all the little "extras", you'll definitely want to check out Aircraft Spruce for the additional bits and pieces, since they maintain a warehouse in Ontario and as such if you have things delivered from their Ontario warehouse, you can avoid all the import fees there as well. Great to hear you're joining the ranks of RV-10 builders! Dan On 2014-Sep-21, at 8:15 AM, Mike Middlebro' wrote: > > Thanks David, I appreciate the advice.
