I also had a favorable experience with the FAA inspection of my rv3 in
1996. He seemed more interested in the weight and balance calculations
than the airplane. I found out later that he was a retired C-141 load
master. After every thing was signed we shook hands and he said "Don't
fly that thing until I'm out of here".

Yeah, I have no complaints about my FAA experience so far. The guy is
very friendly, knowledgable and interested in my project. Asking to see
it run is not unreasonable, IMO. And, the price is right!!
Good luck on your first flight. I'm sure it will go perfectly!

The latest:
I took my prop off tonight. After talking to many resources, the latest
theory is the prop itself has issues. Hartzell is going to initiate
warrenty work Monday. I'll likely have to push back the FAA visit planned
for Wednesday. Stinks.............
