Subject: | Can someone bring me up to speed - RV-6A nose wheel |
problems.
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Terry Mortimore <terry.mortimore@shaw.ca>
Hi Gang:
I'm finally going to be able to get back to building my RV-6A after too long a
break. I'm going to order my fuselage kit and I have to decide which version to
build.
My situation has changed and it looks like I will be based on a 2000 foot grass
strip that does have some rough spots. At the time I was forced to put my project
on the back burner there was a problem with the nose wheel rod on the 6A's,
some had broken and I believe there was a recall of sorts.
My question, have there been any problems since? Has the problem been corrected?
I would prefer the 6A, but if there is any doubt about it I would go with the 6
and get some tailwheel training.
thanks, terry.

It's hard to picture what area you're talking about. Can you bring it
Sunday? There will be no shortage of opinions!!
I order the wrong nuts once. They were coarse theads and the bolts were
fine thread. Could that be the problem?

Sorry if it wasn't clear. In the meantime, I got two more bolts out... so I
only have one aileron bellcrank bracket left (both bolts on it).
This picture will exactly show the problem area:

pg
It's the bracket (where it says "R" and has an arrow pointing up). Both of
those bolts are stuck.. they're not coming out. I can turn 'em, but they're
not going anywhere.
PS. They were proper bolts/nuts/nutplates but I think I messed it up while
torqueing...
PPS. Since it's stuck like that, I can't really bring the whole thing with
me.
Thanks
Radomir

Terry, Van offered a beefier nose wheel rod for the RV-6A after several had
failed. I shipped my old rod back and they match holed drilled the new rod
to match (it is visibly thicker). I have flown in and out of grass strips
with no problem. So I believe that problem has been fixed. I have heard of
no unexpected failures since.
As to whether you want to routinely operate out of a rough grass strip with
a RV-6A is another issue. I personally have found I like the ability to
really stand on the brakes hard without worry about nosing over - it saved
my aircraft once. But, clearly experience has shown that a tail dragger is
better for rough fields over the long haul.

Ah. OK. You still have access to both sides of the bolt, right? You could
grind the nut off and try a new nut/bolt.

Finally, the bolt saga is over. Got 'em all out. The ones stuck in
nutplates were the worst/hardest!!
Before I put new ones in, I need to figure out just what happened and why.
At this time, I suspect it was due to overtorqueing.. My torque wrenches
are pure crap...
