Anyone going anywhere tomorrow? The wx looks mighty fine up this way for
tomorrow afternoon.
I went up for some air this evening after the winds died down a bit, and
witnessed one of those beautiful sunsets where the sun is a crimson peach with
violet stripes and sinks slowly behind indigo clouds layered just above the true
horizon, all this, of course, with row upon row of misty blue Allegheny
Mountains in the foreground... wish I had taken the digital camerea along, as it
was
certainly a Fuji moment. It looks cool when you roll the whole sight-picture
360 degrees a time or two as well ;-)
Hey, Len: did those pics on the CD ever arrive?

some more lessons ... we had ceilings of 400' all weekend ... YUCK !!!

Hard to believe the difference in wx patterns; we had some breeze Sat pm and a
nice day Sunday; went to Rainelle for lunch with the wife along & full fuel (I'm
looking for an excuse for what I'm about to say...) and made two of the worst
landings ever: too high a sink rate at Rainelle and too fast a touchdown speed
at home; my wife commented that I needed some work, and she normally is very
complimentary of my airmanship. At least I let the gear take the punishment
and didn't make the bounces any worse by fighting them, which is guaranteed
to cause a divergent PIO on the trike gear (ask me how I know).
Something is fishy about that CD, Len... I mailed it last week. Maybe it got
on the same slow mail truck that my SERV shirt is on ;-)
Let's plan on a fall foliage fly-in at my place Saturday Oct. 30. We'll have a
campfire and late-afternoon weenie-roast, horseshoes, croquet, maybe a woodsplitting
/ lumberjack contest (gotta get some work out of my guests ;-)
No can do on the SERFI event, as my niece is getting married the first Sat in Oct
in the DC area.

Well I can now stop wondering why the airport is closed.
Check out this Avweb site with pictures.
This will make your stomach turn. You guys might recognize the FBO

Here is a report of Orlando airport. Wow this is scarey.
=====
Scores of airplanes destroyed by Hurricane Charley, Orlando Executive
destroyed...
Winds of up to 145 MPH broke tie-downs, in some cases the tie-downs
held but the aircraft did not. Absent or weak control locks let
structures flutter, some gone while others badly damaged. At some
airports, a poorly tied-down plane broke loose and slammed into other
more secured planes.
Orlando Executive has been destroyed, hangars, planes, the works.
Some are saying that they might as well close the place, that it's
just ruined. It is also reported that seventy percent of the trees in
Orlando are down and that the character of the town has been changed.
Some of the fallen trees became missiles in the high winds. The
aircraft losses could have been far worse as many pilots flew their
planes out to a safer area.
Flying-out was argued at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, trying to
save the aircraft. Flight-line staff were concerned about the cost of
fuel, hotels for the pilots, and simply not having enough pilots on
hand. They decided to rely on their four-point tiedown system on the
single-engine aircraft and stored the twin-engine Seminole trainers
inside a maintenance hangar. When winds hit 106 knots they carried
off the anemometer. The winds destroyed at least twelve of the
school's Cessnas and two Diamond DA-40s. One of the Diamonds held by
the tie-downs, the vertical stabilizer is gone, the other one got
loose and is in pieces. The Seminoles appear to be OK, but the
hangar in which they are now trapped is badly damaged with the doors
destroyed, and may be structurally unsound. The doors will have to be
dismantled to get the airplanes out. Embry-Riddle is without power
and now facing the proble! m of the lost revenue from the destroyed
aircraft, as the fall semester was set to begin. You may remember
in '92, many of their aircraft were flown to Daniel Field for safety,
during Andrew.
As more pictures and video make its way out of the area, we see what
devastation this storm produced. Insurance estimates are now around
$20 Billion.

I think we need to convince W8 to keep his plane until he's completed the
RV-10 tail. Yeah, that's it.....
