Dennis says that he's noticed that he should add more foam to the side
panels--more for noise than anything. He treated the firewall primarily for
heat (he thought) but it's the noise that gets ya.
What do you mean by "turn downs"? Dennis cut his exhaust pipes off. You
don't want them hanging down in the airstream. Let them be loud, but for
goodness sake, don't let them slow ya down! GRIN!
Actually, it puts undue stress on your exhaust system having them hanging
out in the wind. Dennis broke a bracket or two before he cut them off.

Larry Vetterman suggested the turn downs -- the way his exhaust use to be.
Right now things are so loud, I'd give up five knots for some relief.
I'll try some insulation first.

That is what I used. I did firewall, sides, floor and top panel back to
the instrument panel. I will do the inside of the tunnel the first time
that I have the center consol out. It helps a lot.

Larry I really don't know about the sides. Mine are not done and I don't
seem to have a problem.
Do you have the Viterman EX? I experimented with some down turns but never
flew with them. Do you get exhaust stains on the belly and or oil. I'm
told almost all RV get some. On mine I found I could minimize it by
adjusting the exhaust stacks. You might check with Dan he even has some
kind of muffler on his.
Do you use a noise CNX headset. Mine works well to combat the noise.

Larry, I'm not happy with your choice of insulation. I got some of the one
you are getting and some of the Koolmat before I decided. If I not mistaken
the Koolmat is far superior.
Just my thought.

Larry
are you still using that in-the-ear headset? I was just wondering if
that's the best choice for a noisy plane like an RV. I bought the
lightspeed crosscountry anr headset and the noise doesn't seem too bad
to me as a new rv driver. Actually, not bad at all, even with the anr
turned off. I haven't done anything to the firewall. My exhaust pipes
do have an angled section at the ends. is that the turn down you're
talking about?

Koolmat has a fireproof rubbery like material on one side the side toward
the back of the airplane and fiberglass impregnated on the side toward the
firewall. It is much more substantive and stops almost all the oil canning
of the firewall.
I have a piece for you, where do I send it. I will get it in today's mail
if you send me an address ASAP.

I plan on using those, but right now I'm using the new pair of Telex
ANR's. The stick-it-in-your-ear headsets worked fine as passenger in
Len's plane. He just has firewall insulation, I think.
Thanks,

Larry,
Someone once told me the cheapest noise insulation kit for an RV is a set of
Bose (or insert your favorites) noise cancelling headsets.
We have some noise deadening stuff in our RV6 but if you take the headsets
off it is STILL loud!
I have used both the Bose Series X (best feel to me) and the DRE 6000 (best
value to me) . Both (and I am sure MANY others) are fine.

Got 'em. I have the high-end Telex ANR's. It was loud with the ANR on;
off, my ears started bleeding. Just kidding....

FYI
============
A special notice to AOPA members in the central North Carolina area
==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==
FAA TO ESTABLISH TFR OVER CHARLOTTE ON FRIDAY
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in and near Charlotte, North
Carolina, that the FAA is expected to issue a notam restricting flight in
the area during President Bush's planned visit on Friday, September 17.
Based on information from the Bush campaign, the president will be in the
area for an event at 3:45 p.m. local time. AOPA anticipates that the notam
will establish a large temporary flight restriction (TFR) limiting general
aviation flight. Typically, these presidential
travel-related TFRs are 60 nautical miles in diameter (30-nm radius) and
contain one or more smaller general aviation no-fly zones. AOPA will post
the notam on AOPA Online
( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html ) as soon as possible after it
is issued. A graphic will also be available.
Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight. TFR
violators will be intercepted and forced to land.
==> HELPFUL WEB LINKS <==
AOPA's Real-Time Flight Planner provides graphical
depictions of TFRs ( http://www.aopa.org/flight_planner/ ).
Check the FAA's TFR Web site ( http://tfr.faa.gov ).

Larry: I am sorry to hear you have joined the ranks of electronic ignition owners
who have had unexpected trouble. I know exactly what that's like :-(
I sent my Rose module back on a one-way trip to Chattanooga a long time ago, about
halfway through my test period, and have been happily flying along behind
dual mags ever since. (It's all in the archives...) I burn more fuel, have less
horsepower, and use expensive aviation plugs, but I sleep well at night and
I don't anticipate getting stuck in the Bahamas with an ignition problem <g>.
I wish these things worked as claimed 100% of the time, as I'd happily be a
customer. I would love to have all the pruported benefits with no reliability
hassles, but after a faulty experience, I remain gun-shy about these ignitions.
To paraphrase one father in ancient times, "Jeff, Klaus: I _want_ to believe.
Help thou my unbelief!" Meanwhile the LASAR is the only one that turns
my head even for a moment.
Hope you get it all ironed out. At least you won't have to split the case to solve
this one :-)
I'm hunkered down waiting for the rain to hit, and for the UPS man to bring my
blank instrument panel from Van's, so I can repair to the Bat Cave for top secret
panel upgrades...
-Stormy

Just as I suspected; your problem is Flakes in the cockpit!
>>Right now things are so loud, I'd give up five knots for some relief. <<
What kind of statement is that?! This is about SPEED, Larry, not your ears. Grow
a pair (of ear plugs) and flog that new rocket for all she's worth. To heck
with the decibels; we've got knots!!!!! YEE-HAW!

I recently heard the JR has stopped selling his
systems but will continue to service those fielded.
Larry,
I too am sorry to hear about your electronic ignition problems.
Like Stormy, I'm running2 mags and would love to install an electronic
ignition system, but everytime I hear about a problem it makes me glad to
have the basic "old" sysytem.
Good Luck,
Bob Martin
ps..I use Lightspeed ANR's.....and yes it is LOUD if I take them
off....actually deafening!!

I did the firewall and floor. I came back and added the floor more for

Sounds like a little bit of proseal may be coming out ... you could easiely
remove the tank drain completely and drain several gallons out ... or when you
get the tanks down in fuel ... pull out the tank drain and let the last few
gallons completely wash out the wing ..
