I Think the msg from Greg (Chapter 8) was in error. I was up there
several times this week and they were preparing. Ben Pace asked me to
spread the word. They won't begin serving until 2PM.
Runway 18-36 is in good shape and common traffic frequency is 122.9.

Is there any problems landing a RV-6A, or traildragger for that matter, on
turf?
I have an opportunity to buy a RV-6A with all major subcomponent
construction complete, i.e., the wings are ready for mounting, ailerons and
flaps are complete. It still needs interior, instrument panel and FWF. It
would be based out central PA on a 3000 foot grass strip. It's not the
roughest field I've ever landed on but it does have some bumps.
I've been told that the RV crowd in PA doesn't like the feild because of
problems with wheel pants getting torn off. Can yins (that PA talk - means
y'all) confirm or deny this vicious rumor?

John,
It may depend on which model wheel pants the aircraft has. The older
RV-6s had wheel pants that provided a bit more clearance that the newer
"Pressure Recovery" types. I have operated my RV-6a with the older wheel
pants out of some fairly rough grass/dirt strips with no problem (thus far).

>>Is there any problems landing a RV-6A, or traildragger for that matter, on

post results right here this evening.

Well, that would prejudice me against that field somewhat, too! The only times
I've sustained wheelpant damage on the RV have been in chuck-holes, ditches and
other unmarked hazards, and on a rough runway that wasn't even seeded yet.
I don't know what I was thinking that day going in there, but there was peer
pressure being applied... Oh, yeah, there was the time I flew in too-deep snow
off my own strip, and the time I brought it in for touchdown with a flat nosewheel
tire that I was unaware of. In all, it's hard to blame a strip that's
only moderately bumpy for damage. For the mnost part, it's the pilot's smoothness,
not the sod's, that influences the outcome.

We have several guys that live on grass strips that can answer better than
me ... but I have landed my 8A on grass strips on many ocassions. I always
baby my nose gear whether it is on pavement or grass ... thats the way Mike
Seager taught me. I lift the nose as soon as it will come up then hold it off
the runway until the plane wants to fly off ... kinda like a soft field
takeoff except I don't force the plane off the ground early ...
On landing I hold the nose off the ground as long as it will stay off. I
find the most harsh time for the fairings is on rollout if you are going too
fast and also taxiing too fast.
I am sure Stormy, Wayne8, and some of the other guys that live on grass
strips will chime in !!

Any reports from events at Stormy's or Pace today? I was out a little bit,
but went to HKY for some family affairs. I did some poor landings at EXX on
the way back.....

Good for you, Larry. It's important to stay current in all flight maneuvers, so
practicing some poor landings every now and then makes good sense; it's easy
to forget how to make poor ones after you get good ;-)
I showed up for my fly-in today, which is also good, because no one else did.
I ate all the food myself and probably gained 10 pounds. I thought about going
to Pace, but would have felt terrible if someone had shown up at my place while
I was away, so I stayed pretty much local in my aerial meanderings today.

Sorry it was a bust. Larry Small called me today asking about your place
and next weekend. If he has an open seat, I may fill it.
