      Larry,
We followed the plans like you did and came up with the same results.
We were replacing the original pants on your -6's for upgrading purposes.
We have come to realize the original design was better for grass strips, etc
Larry and I were looking for the newer looks and more speed as usual but
didn't know we were giving up some utility as we hadn't heard orther guys
speak of it. We started with 1/2" space around the tire and found we had to
enlarge this where the tire bulges from low air or heaven forbid a bounced
landing. When we replaced tires we went to the air stop tubes and now keep
the air pressure about 35+ and watch it a little more......
Like Dana said we watch the step downs at the edge of the pavements a little
closer too. When we land at grass strips(mostly, Stormy's) we don't seem to
have any problems. My opinion is the design is fine for normal flying and
landing but could get hurt in odd taxi or bounced landings. The plus side is
the fiberglass is easy to fix.....:-)
I hate admit this but I will.....We used the Stainless Steel brackets
instead of the Alum ones vans supplied and before we painted them, he had a
bad bounced landing that broke the bottom rear half of the pant....actually
a small tear, easy to repair. but it also bend the SS bracket and when it
bent, it rubbed the brake disc. The fix was pretty easy as we disassembled
it and straightened it out and fixed the fiberglass....and yes, enlarged the
gap between the tire and pant. Now we think about our pants on every
      landing.
It is amazing as I have come to learn to fly this taildragger, I first
thought about the tail while landing, then in crosswinds I thought about the
wingtips while landing, and now I feel I have progressed to only thinking
about the wheel pants while landing....I think I'm improving....:-)
      Happy Thanksgiving to all.

      Hi Gang,
      Happy Thanksgiving!!
Wayne asked me about changing my O360 fixed pitch over to a Hartzell C/S. I
replied to him directly but thought a few of you may interested in the change
      over as well.
Rick in Ohio at the Buffalo Farm - read on:

      Hi Wayne,
Transition went fine. After I did mine another member of our group changed
his over and yet another has a C/S on order as we speak and will make the change

as soon as his prop arrives.

      Here's a list of parts you'll need:
      -new prop
      -governor
      -governor adapter - Aerosport Power
-governor gear drive - Aerosport Power
-governor to engine - oil supply line - Aerosport Power
-all fittings and gaskets for the governor and supply line - Aerosport Power
      -governor control bracket - Vans
      -vernier cable - Vans
-new rear crank plug - Aerosport Power
-tool to install the new rear crank plug - I have one
      -new spinner - Vans
-new bulkheads for the spinner - Vans
-new doubler plate for the rear bulkhead - Vans
-firewall pass through grommets - local or look in your toolbox or buy from
      Vans

Don't forget, this is a MAJOR CHANGE and will require some FAA paperwork.
Mine was easy, just had to make the entries in my logs and fly off 5 hours with

no passengers in my phase 1 area.

Also you'll need some clean towels.....to wipe the grin off your face after
      your 1st flight....ha ha.

Took me 7 days but a lot of that was making a new spinner with no visable
screws in it. That included paint as well.

You can do it in 3 days if you work on it.

      Good luck,
Rick - home email is rgray67968@aol.com

      Rick:
Len tells me you just upgraded to a CS prop. I'm building a 9 and am
thinking of moving my FP 180hp to the 9 and installing a new Superior XP-360
with a CS prop in my 8. How did your transition go? Thanks for the input!

      Wayne,
Overhauled Hartzell C/S and Woodward governor was $3,800 total plus a few
bucks shipping from US Propellers in NC.
      Flexible oil line $100
      Vernier prop control cable ~$50
      Control cable bracket ~$12
      Misc stuff ~$10
Less $1,500 AND a Vans spinner kit for my Warnke wood prop that I sold to
      offset the cost.
      Total out of pocket ~$2,472

Not bad for a Zero time C/S Hartzell :
      ).

And a GREAT addition to my RV....especially for formation flying. Kinda' like
having a 'brake pedal' on the floor :
). Also, power is RIGHT THERE when you
      need it.

And....I get about 7-8 mph on the top end....although it seems to use about a
half gallon an hour of fuel more than the wood prop at cruise.....(now I'm up
to about 8.7/hr) but.....I'm going faster so it's a trade off.

Thanks for all the input on the wheel pants. Looks like I have some re-work
ahead of me to raise them up a little. Better to do it now than after
      things are painted.....
