      SERV:

Just got this back from Laura Crook who helps put on the January RV Fly In
in Lakeland ... thought TeamRV was going to put on a formaiton clinic but they

are not as you can see below.

Several of us are planning to go down for the weekend ... all are welcome to
join up. We are flying down on Friday morning January 14th ... camping on
the Sun N Fun site and heading home on Sunday.

I thought they were , too. I just received email today and they are not
able to make it for 2005.

Sun n Fun will update their web page asap. I am out of town and cannot
update the VAF page until I get home Saturday.

This is the OFFICIAL WORD so please share it with your RV friends, We are
still having the fly in, of course.

In fact, I am looking for volunteers to do 1 hour forums on Saturday
afternoon. Are you interested or can you suggest anybody?

      Thanks,

What kind of fuel burn are you guys showing per hour? I am trying to
calibrate my Rocky Mtn uMonitor for fuel flow and fuel remaining ... my EI fuel

gauge is calibrated and very accurate. I have never tried to get the fuel flow

calibrated .. but on that quest now.

I flew 2.9 hours since the last fill up ...took 20.2 gallons to fill back up
      ...

I have to be burning more than 7 gallons per hour ....

I think the timer/hobbs on the uMonitor might be off ... I am going to
compare to the timer on the GPS but I don't think they will agree since the
uMonitor works off rpm for timing ..

      Len,
I'm sure the Lycomings are burning the normal 10-13 gph.......
but we track the hobbs meter in a notebook to log time and oil usage, etc
and we only show about 7 gph ....based on hobbs reading.........
so the taxi, cruise and desent must really offset the takeoff and climb
      rates.
What ever it is.........I like it!!!!!!!
Cause thats whats comes out of my checkbook per hour logged!

How does the hobbs function of the umonitor work? My EIS can be set to
only start "the clock" when first going above a certain RPM. I forget now
what mine is set at...maybe 1200 or something.

You put in a certain cruise rpm ... say 2400 and at the rpm it will record 1
hour of time ... if flying at 1200 it will record 30 min. That is how the
      manual states it.

IMHO the fuel burn must be calculated using the EIS time on engine in my
case this is set to 1500 RPM. If I'm on a X-country when I'm always above
1500 RPM I get around 8-9.5, If I'm doing a lot of pattern work I get less
      than 7.

      Hi Len,

A couple of things might be conspiring to confuse the issue.

If you did numerous takeoff/landings, your burn will be much lower than
at cruise because you are in the pattern at reduced power much longer
that you are at full power for climb (except for a long climb for high
altitude cross country, of course). Also, most people don't run at
anywhere near 75% power at cruise. I've flown 160hp engines in 3
different homebuilts + 1 factory plane & they all burned around 9gph
when flown at 75%. One of them was injected with a c/s prop & when run
at 2400rpm up at 8000', it only burned around 7.3gph (but that ain't
      75% power). I've had 1 180hp c/s prop & it burned 10gph. All had much
lower burn numbers when there were a lot of t/o & landings on a tank of
gas, often as low as 6.5-7.5gph.

Check the Lyc Manual to see what 75% power settings really are (most
people are shocked). Fill both tanks, take off on one & climb to
~8,000', lean for cruise operation & set cruise power. Start a timer (or
look at your watch) & switch tanks. Fly for say, 1/2 hour without
changing altitude, throttle or rpm settings & switch back to the other
tank. Return to the airport & top off the 'cruise' tank. Now do the math
& you know your real 75% cruise fuel burn. Should be around .45*actual
      hp/6. For a 160, 9gph; for a 180, 10gph. Slightly better if injected
      and/or electronic ignition.

Don't know about the uMonitor, but a mechanical tach's hour meter is
      definitely affected by rpm.

      Charlie
(It's good that you didn't come down for the flyin on the 13th; ceiling
& vis. was so bad I didn't make it the 20 miles from here to there.)

Yep, it was me, and boy did I make some bad
      landings/t&g's... Hope I didn't scare anybody too badly. I
have gotten quite a bit better in the last two days. Flew it
Monday on my lunch hour and again today (Tuesday) on my
lunch hour. I now have about 6 hours taildragger time, and
finally feel like I can land the damned thing without
calling the fire trucks to be on standby. I finally flew it
down here last friday, from BKW. Flew over to Gold Hill on
Saturday to visit with Ron and Kathy, his canopy looks just
beautiful. Hope to see everybody real soon, but for the
moment still practicing with the airplane before I venture
too far in it. I realized when I looked at my logbook that I
hadn't been up in more than two years, time sure does fly...
