Bill, Not certain what they use, but something like a Spar Varnish make for
boat wood work would probably do. They make it in some polyurethane
formulas - might check your local marine store.

Hey Bill,
I sold my Warnke prop from my O-360 RV6 when I converted to a
Hartzell.....but, I got LOTS of compliments on the Warnke. I've refinished it and
a bunch of
other wood props and have had great success with a procedure recommended to me
by Amar-DeMuth.
-Sand the prop 'lightly' with a good 220 sandpaper. Remove as much or all of
the 'old' finish as desired. Go extra light over the leading and trailing
edges.
-Follow up with 320 then 400 sanding. You can do ALL the sanding on your prop
in anywhere from .5 hrs to 3 hrs depending on the condition.
-This is my old ultralight remedy: Once sanded you can repair any nicks by
filing them with a round file. Then put a drop of good 'super glue' into the
void ....spread with a tooth pick. Follow this with baking soda applied with a
popsicle stick or equivalent. Quickly put another drop of super glue over the
baking soda. This a snap crackle pop 1-2-3 application....don't dilly dally. The
super glue chemically reacts with the Baking soda....it'll start smoking and
hardens like a ROCK in just seconds. Just slop it on.....then grab your file
and file it to shape followed by some finish sanding. Take some paint and dab
it on the repair to make it match the 'color' of your wood prop. The repair
will OUTLAST ANY WOOD PROP....PERIOD!! I always carried super glue, baking soda,
and a file in my tool kit for field repairs.....never needed it but I was
ready :
).
-Tape and paint tips or back of prop as appropriate
.
-Fab up a decent painting rack for the prop.
-Go to Lowes and buy 1 can of 'Hellsmans' outdoor SPAR uearathane (sp). Spray
on a light tack coat...wait 5 minutes and follow with a medium 'covering'
coat......followed by 2 or 3 'finish' coats. You can NOT mess this up.....piece
of cake.......if you do just wait 48 hrs and sand it smooth with 1000 grit then
1500 grit and some compound. You're prop will look BETTER than new EVERY
TIME!! Will also hold up well.....even in light rain.
Oh yea....if you can't find the 'Hellsmans' spar uearathane (sp) then go to
K-Mart and buy their 'Red Devil' Spar stuff....Exterior. This is GOOD stuff and
one of the best kept secrets!!
The above will save you about 200 buckaroos plus down time while you wait for
SOMEONE ELSE to do what you can easily accomplish!!
No Charge for this one Bill.....good luck buddy!!

Bill,
Patty and I recently refinished ours.
We have the coating at the airport ... will have to go look up the EXACT
stuff that Ed Sterba insisted we use. Along with the types of brushed etc.
If you happen to stop by we can give you ALL you need to finish your prop.
