RVSouthEast-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the RVSouthEast-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the RVSouthEast-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
RVSouthEast-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the RVSouthEast-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

Thanks again for all the advise for flying to Beauford. I must admit that I
had misread my sectional. The space next to MRH is an Alert Area, not part
of the broad restricted airspace. (Very deceiving on the chart.) Cherry
Point approach could not have been nicer. The beach and city was wonderful--
a great way to ring in the new year! Unfortunately, all the restaurants were
closed, though.

Hi Folks
Had a great time and good BBQ now that I finally found Stantons. Good to meet
some of you for the first time and seeing those of you I've know. Really looking
forward to the next one.
Some of you may have noticed my somewhat strange behavior after I took off from
Stantons. I had intended to come back around and give you a sizzling low-level
pass before heading back to Goose Creek. However, had a bit of an incident
after take off that cause me to change plans.
Everything went fine until I reached my best climb speed of 120 mph shortly past
the end of the runway, at which point I
1. Pull back on the stick to get the ROC up to 1800 fpm
2. Heard a Loud "Pop"
3. Had the canopy spring open!!! I immediately recognized the symptom (as it had
happened once before when I forgot to latch it.) as a whole lot of noise is
made. But, even recognizing it, still causes the seat cushion to develop a pucker.
4. I Immediately decreased airspeed and
Keeping the nose up until I gained 1500 ft I then reached up and grabbed the upper
hatch handle (and secondary canopy lock) to pull the canopy closed - only
to have the handle come off in my hand!!!. Things were not getting better!
I find I think better about problems the more altitude I have, so
I kept the airspeed down to around 110 mph and slowly circled as I climbed to 3000
MSL to fiddle with it and assess the situation.
Turns out, the main canopy latch handle WAS locked into its proper place, however,
a aluminum push/pull tube which causes the canopy latching mechanism to rotate
and latch had unscrewed from its fitting (after over 300 hours) and was
just laying there hanging by the one end which was still attached. When I tried
to close the canopy with the overhead secondary latch handle, I apparently
exerted sufficient force trying to pull the canopy closed with the handle that
I sheared the cotter pin that is suppose to keep the handle attached. If anyone
else has a tip-up I would suggest using a larger size cotter pin.
Well, I found that if I stuck the secondary latch handle back into its fitting
and rotated it to the latch position that the asymmetric loads would keep it in
its hole in the block of HMDP plastic. So that enabled me to keep the canopy
closed down to about 2" of the side rail so long as I did not exceed 100 MPH.
So to end the story I flew down at TAS of around 170 mph and flew back at 90MPH
(practiced some slow flight on the way home {:>)) - I like 170 much better.
Landed with no problem and will get out there and fix the thing Monday - as well
as clean off the seat cushion.
Best Regards
Ed Anderson

Thanks for sharing the story, Ed - I'll check my canopy latch linkage for security
before next flight!
