Hi Ed,
It was a pleasure to finally meet you after exchanging email, phone and
radio chatter for some time now. Now that you have your canopy under
control I hope you will come visit at Gold Hill Airpark. We had a great
visit by a number of RVers on Saturday both before and after Stantons.
While you are here I would like to pop your cowl and see what is making all
that noise! Last time I heard anything like that was when both our cats
came into heat at the same time. ;=) Glad the canopy incident came out OK.
Fly Safe.

Same here, Ron
I will plan on visiting when you return and will pop the cowl for you. Be
forewarned I can talk about the rotary until you eyeballs roll back in your
head {:>).
The noise is excessive of that there is no doubt. Trying to be a good noise
environment citizen, I am working on a muffler (3rd iteration) which I hope
will:
1. Reduce the "cat fight" noise to a more acceptable level
2. Not kill the power due to excessive back pressure
3. Live under the assault of the exhaust power and temps
So far I can get 2 of the 3 but not all 3 {:>). Hopefully this next one will
be acceptable under all 3 criterion.
See you and have a safe trip
Ed

Right Stormy! Check it.
Upon further investigation, it appears that when I screwed the aluminum
push/pull rod onto the fittings at each end of the locking mechanism (many
years ago), I failed to notice that two jam nuts were called for (one on
each end). Either that or I may have assumed that there was not sufficient
room for the rod to unscrew completely - if so, that was a faulty
assumption.
The Tip-Up canopy can lift as much as 4-6 inches at the aft end from the
canopy rails - causes a lot of noise, not much (if any wind) cockpit and
doesn't noticeably alter any flying characteristics. But, I have never had
one pop at high speeds, my two incidents (one when I failed to lock the
canopy) and the most recent one were at 110 mph or lower. Just keep the
airspeed down and climb to a safe altitude, slow the aircraft down and pop
the flaps and bring the airspeed down to about 5-10 MPH above a stall and
the force pulling the canopy up lessens considerably and its possible to
pull it down and lock it with the upper secondary latch handle - provided it
doesn't come off in your hand {:>)

About 25 minutes from KCUB. About 15 minutes from KCAE. Primarily
interstate. Easy drive.

Rique, I don't known personally, but I have heard that in some cases the
Rv-4 canopy departs the aircraft by stripping out the pop rivets holding the
hinge side to the aircraft (the rivets are designed to give before causing
damage to the aircraft). In another case, I heard of the pilot catching the
canopy before it could lift high enough for the main slip stream to get
under it and managed to keep it down until he landed. But, both cases are
hear-say as I did not get the information directly from the parties
involved.

Last year after the Bladenboro Fly In I had stopped at Elizabethtown to get
fuel and a gentleman from Burgaw (Stag Park) landed with the canopy hanging off
to the side and rear of an RV 4. It had come open in flight and he said he
could hardly maintain flight. I'm sure that some of you guys know someone down
there that could link you up with him for more details. It wasnt pretty.W8.

It *will* unzip & depart if it's allowed to open fully in flight. Ed got
the story about hanging on & keeping it below the slipstream 1st hand,
but we won't talk about who he heard it from, will we?
