Ron and Steve just arrived home from a really great trip to the RV fly in at Lakeland.
We arrived to 1000' overcast and 5 miles. Basically cold and crummy
most of the time. We had to wait till 11:00 to get VFR this morning. Then after
takeoff we flew 5 minutes and broke into sever clear all the way back to JQF.

We met many very nice folks, only about 30 RV's though. Ed Anderson was the only
other SERVer that made it. Way to go Ed!

Ron gave me my first lesson in formation flying. We joined up in a three plane
formation for over an hour. Great stuff. Too bad the cameras where behind
the back seat in the luggage.

Many hellos to Len from the guys down there. They are all planning on Lumberton.

I flew to Lakeland with Steve Glasgow on Saturday and when we arrived there
were messages on both our cell phones from our wives. They had heard news
of Steve Behrens' death. The weather in Lakeland was barely VFR, cold and
windy and only 20 or so RV's braved the elements to attend. The news of
Steve's death put an additional chill on the day. I met Steve just last
November. He was a United Airline pilot who had been out on disability for
several years while fighting a brain tumor. After years of treatment Steve
beat the cancer and was hopeful of getting his medical certificate back soon
and resuming his flying career and he wanted build an RV! He visited my
home and hangar at Gold Hill Airpark several times and on New Year's Day he
got a ride in Scott Keadle's RV-8. The RV Grin was plastered all over his
face and when he heard of a local RV-4 with the "tall man" option (Steve was
6' 3") was up for sale we headed for Miller Airpark to check it out. It
belongs to a friend of SteveVanHoy and was parked in Steve's hangar along
with his beautiful RV-6A. He (Steve Behrens) was sold! He had to sell his
classic Chevy ElCamino and a motorcycle or two, but he would buy that RV-4
and get to work on an RV-8. His enthusiasm was contageous and I remember
telling him that if I had anything left to sell I surely would have helped
him out. We suffered from the same ailment: the "RV Bug"!
Steve was only 52 and far to young to stop playing the game. I phoned
Steve's wife, Sheila moments after I heard the news and though she was quite
distraught she was grateful that those who shared Steve's love of flying
were mourning his passing. She was being looked after by her grown children
and I told her that I stood ready to do anything I could help out. She
thought for just a moment and then asked me if it would be possible for some
of the guys to fly over at Steve's funeral. I told her that I know several
pilots who would probably be honored to do such a thing. So, I am passing
the request on to the members of SERV Squadron. I don't know when or where
but I will pass on details as I learn them.
I am traveling to California on Tuesday to visit my father but will return
late Friday. I may not have access to email while I am gone, but I will
have the cell phone (704-798-5307). If you would like to help out, email me
on Monday or call after that. Thanks guys!

Just to let everyone know, I talked with Steve
yesterday (Friday) and he had planned to ride
with me in Bill Crother's RV4 down to LAL. He was
to meet me this morning (Sat.) and we planned a
10 AM departure. When he did not show I called
his home which is near Asheboro only to get the
terrible news that he had died this morning or
during the night. Though I had not met him
except briefly on the phone and via email I had
looked forward to flying with him. We had a good
conversation and this really took the wind out of
my sails. I scrubbed today altogether and will
      probably go flying tomorrow.

Very sad. I met Steve back in November. He looked over my RV-8 and gave me
a personal tour of the Asheboro museum. Let us know about the details of
      the fly-over.
