I am with you. Len. To pay $25 to land on tarmac paid for by the tax payers
is too much. Here are some details
From William Dobson on 28-Apr-2004
Hickory has instituted a $25.00 landing fee, collected by the only FBO on
the field, Profile Aviation, for standard single-engine piston aircraft. The
landing fee goes up if you're flying a cabin-class single, a twin, a turbine
or a helicopter. They will waive the fee if you purchase a minimum of 20
gallons of avgas (singles, more fuel is required for twins and Jet-A
consumers). Apparently, the fee apparently applies to all landings.
I'll be off your right wing over Hickory {:>)

If you're looking for suggestions, take a look at Stanley Co. (VUJ). They
have always been a friendly bunch, and usually have fairly inexpensive fuel.
If that is too far east, my other ace in the hole for west of Fayetteville
is Lincolnton (IPJ). They are friendly folks with decent fuel prices as
well.

I, being the reactionary the Ed knows me to be, would be calling the FBO
on the radio any time they were in range & asking if there's a
landing/ramp charge. Then I'd tell them, on the unicom freq (hopefully
it's used by dozens of airports within a 100 mile radius), "Aw, shucks;
I would'a bought some gas from you but I make it a policy to never land
where there's a fee."
Has anyone blackballed them on Airnav.com?
More important, has anyone checked with AOPA on whether it's legal for
them to charge it if they are getting federal money?

Yes, the Airnav.com has comments (that's where I got the details) concerning
a ramp fee. I question the legality of a ramp fee - but, know the are
charged at many big airports - so my guess is they must past the lawyer
test. The best correction is simply to take the business elsewhere. I do
like your suggestion, Charlie.
I take it you and Weasel had an uneventful flight back to MS

Yeah, except for the unscheduled fuel stop event due to the amazing
headwinds.
Evergreen AL is officially removed from my list of places to buy fuel.
Almost $3.50/gal at a rural airport.

I've been to HKY once since my first flight in Sept. '04. The fee was
"only" $10, waived because they squeezed $20 of fuel into my nearly full
tanks. On the airport diagram, there appears to be other places to park
like the north ramp and the terminal bldg.
http://www.naco.faa.gov/content/naco/online/airportdiagrams/00706AD.PDF. I
might try those the next time I'm there visiting family.
