--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "James E. Clark" <james@nextupventures.com> I wanted to be back by 4:30 but promised my passenger, Robert, I would make it by 5:00. His recently finished (but as yet unpainted) RV6A was left in a hangar at Owens. He needed fuel and had to pack up and get to Charleston before 6:00 (fog rolls in by then). Rushed through the fuel line :-), got all three ships off, made a beeline to Ashville (KAVL) and on to KCUB. Bill and Len peeled off before the mountains. Landed at 4:50 PM ... keeping my promise. I had called ahead and had the FBO top him of so he made it home just in time to beat the weather. All was good. By the way, I was hesitant to "crank it up" due to some earlier "vibrations" I had experienced on the way over, so with the tailwind we were only seeing 165-175 kts. Aren't these some wonderful planes?? I see you were **SMOKIN'** on the way back! Subject: Dana's Fly-in ... Another fun day in the neighborhood
<LONG> --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "James E. Clark" <james@nextupventures.com> Up early yesterday morning as I was supposed to meet Len and Bill at Statesville (KSVH) at 8:45. This meant that I had to leave KCUB no later than 8:00 and probably more like 7:45. Called FSS, viz=2 miles. Call to Len . gonna be delayed a bit. My passenger (Robert) and I decide to take our time and take off as soon as it clears a bit . which it did quickly. Half-way there we see what at first looks like solid fog on the ground ahead but in fact was a layer. Not knowing how far it extended, I informed Charlotte Approach that I needed to do a descending 360 to get underneath. No problem. Now we are under this stuff and viz is crummy. We are down to 1800 ft keeping a look-out for any earthbound protrusions (like 1000 ft. towers) and surprisingly **hills** (mini-mountains?? :-) ) in the area. I notice on the MFD that there are some towers ahead so I take a look at their height .2797 (yikes!)!!! About this time ATC asks if we are familiar with said towers (no, but we have them here on the display) and that the minimum vectoring altitude in that area is 3800 ft. Hmmmm. Fortunately, we have finally passed the cloud layer, so what's an RV pilot to do but pull back on the stick a bit and we're at 3800. Couldn't have done that in the Piper. Taxi in and Len and Bill are there to great us. Len immediately informs me that I am "out of uniform" and I needed to change immediately. Ya see, Len had worked some magic and picked up our new SERV shirts, sweatshirts and caps just the day before. They look great! (even though the cap wasn't the shade of "black" that Len had expected. And they EACH had our names on them! Great job Len. We met at SVH because I wanted to brief our flight down as a formation (flight of 3) on the ground. We did so, checked the planes, got topped of and launched . not direct to i39 but a bit more north to an airport called Lonesome Pines. It turns out that Stormy was going to join us as well so he deviated south to meet us there theoretically by 9:30. With our earlier delays, and the serious headwinds (I think it was 130 kts GS at BEST) heading over) as we were arriving Stormy calls us on the radio as he had decided to depart. He turns around and we all land at Lonesome Pines and (yup you got it) brief the flight over. On the way over, after a rusty start, the gang started to look pretty good even though it was quite bumpy at our altitude. I probably should have bit the bullet and gone higher, but a few bumps I figured "builds character". Make you appreciate the smooth air. And anyway, it would probably be worse at i39. "Palmetto Flight", flight of four, 10 miles South. Fortunately, due to our late arrival, the airspace was not as busy as it was earlier in the day. Yet there were a few planes that we (I) had to be aware of. We swing wide, make our "pass" (in fingertip strong left), pull up and out to turn down wind, setup for left echelon, turn in to initial to 18. Our break is to the right, we come in and land. I would love to say that it was awesome, but in fairness to the crew, I must say it really did get worse (BUMPY), which made it a bit of a struggle to make it look good. Oh well, more practice, practice, practice (and in bumpy air too). As we taxi up, we see what must be nearly 100 RV's and fortunately, we hear on the radio, "there's more space on the ramp now". Ahhhhh. We don't have to go to the south 40. We park, get out, get registered and almost get lot's of food. But since we didn't arrive until almost 12:00 (and some people arrived by 9:00), most of the food was gone! They were getting ready for the 12:00 "Missing Man" Formation honoring many but Dana and Nomad's dads in particular. So on the food, as Rick Gray ("Schmoozer") would say, "ya snooze, ya looze". No problem, Bill orders Pizza. While the pizza is being delivered and after a few quick hellos, we go off to the side and (you guessed it again, DE-BRIEF). While we are doing this Robert goes off to look at RV paint schemes as he is going to the paint shop in a few days. After our debrief, I rush over to the crowd as Dana is giving away the scores of door prizes that he had managed to gather up. Obviously I got there too late to get **MY** prize. Surely he called my name and somebody else took it. Right? Oh well. The next thing I realize, it is time to LEAVE(!). We need to get back to KCUB before 5:00 so Robert can make it to Charleston before the fog rolls in. I am thinking a 4:30 departure but I need to get some fuel. At i39 the fuel is self-serve (keeps costs down) but can you image how long it takes when you are at the back of the line and in a hurry? Of course Larry Bowen was smart about it and got fuel immediately upon arrival. The clock is ticking and we have three planes to fuel up. (Stormy is heading back direct). Tick, tick, tick. Bill and Len finally tell me to go ahead without them and I know Robert doesn't want to get caught fogged out of home. We almost do that but Len and Bill quickly get their fuel and we're off together again. Level at 7,500 ft, this time the speed is a bit better (165-175 kts) yippee! And the GPS says we will make it to KCUB with 10 minutes to spare against my "promised" by 5:00pm arrival. Just before the mountains, Bill and Len bid farewell (Larry had left earlier) and turn to about 130 degrees to head home. Robert and I stay the course to KCUB which takes us over Ashville (KAVL). What a beautiful sight, crossing the mountains in the afternoon with the sun at your back (or at least off to the side). Fifty miles out, I am handed off to Columbia Approach and I feel I am home again. The airports below me are all familiar. I have been to each of them before, at least once for a SC Breakfast Club visit. Looks like we will make it in time. About 17 minutes out, I begin a descent. GS=180kts!! Not bad at all. Lake Murray in sight, Columbia Downtown (the city) in sight, Columbia Owens in sight. We land, taxi up and shut down. Time: 4:50 PM. We had called ahead and made sure Robert's plane was topped off, so he was good to go. Bags from one RV to the next and he off. Makes it home safely before six and before the fog rolls in. Another fun day in the neighborhood. Later in the evening, I am talking to a friend of years back who I had not talked to for some time. He asks me about my interest in planes and what was I doing. I casually mention that "oh some friends and I went to Kentucky for lunch". Yup, another fun day in our (rather LARGE) RV neighborhood. James "Vibes" (for too many reasons)
