Great fun at Grand Strand, everyone! Really enjoyed the flight up, but
agree the flight back was a bit raggedy with headwinds and turbulence all
the way. Also, I sat my VFR Flight Guide on top of the stick to reference
it for a couple of things just before takeoff and managed to trim full nose
up without knowing it! That's a first (for me, anyway)! Wasn't
noticeable on takeoff but it sure was passing 80-90 mph. It wouldn't trim
back down (at least not right away) so I called tower to enter downwind and
throttled back to hold 80. By the time I got to the abeam position, it
began to respond to the trim button and all was well after that.
Lessons learned:
1. Don't place reading materials on top of stick, at least not without
checking trim afterward
2. Full nose up trim is controllable below 80-90 mph but it gets serious
quickly at higher speeds
3. The trim system is very powerful, it takes significant pressure to hold
the nose at higher speeds (thought briefly about the structural integrity
of the control system)
4. Dropping the flaps should have helped, but I didn't have to go to that
as I was able to safely throttle back (might be helpful if you have to keep
the power up for other reasons: terrain or obstacle clearance, for example)
5. The electric trim on mine runs very fast. I've memorized the location
of the trim c/b and am "spring loaded" to pull it in emergency, but in this
case there was no warning because there was no airflow over the controls.
If you don't know exactly where yours is, you might want to check that out

As for the diet ... we could all use those !!! When you first sit in the -8
you have the feeling of being very close to the panel but it only takes a
