Subject: | Re: RVSouthEast-List Digest: 17 Msgs - 03/17/05 |
08:49:33 AM
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: lee.logan@gulfstream.com
Steve: I have very limited formation experience in the RV, but I did
notice a couple of things that surprised me (for what they are worth).
1. Formation takeoff: There was a huge difference between the takeoff
performance of my airplane and lead which was problematical. Fixed pitch
RV's and those with c/s props don't accelerate at the same rate at all.
The flight leader was far more experienced in RV formation flying than me,
so I could have been doing something wrong. But regardless, I had to
throttle WAY back to keep from lifting off ahead of and accelerating out in
front of him. There are a lot of engine and prop combinations out there
and potentially a lot of performance differential to be accomodated.
2. They briefed side-by-side line up (that may not be standard?),
positioning on the runway, and during takeoff roll. Maybe it's just me,
but I found that uncomfortable and contra-intuitive. I would have thought
that a position similar to the position you would take airborne would make
more sense and provide some clearance for aborts as well.
Well, that's all for me. I'm too new at this and don't know enough about
RV flying to be of much help otherwise (I'm still doing dumb things like
trimming full nose up for takeoff!).
Regards,
Lee...
