I've gotten a price from a one man shop near Fayetteville, but he's likely to take a couple of months, which is too long imho. I'm also trying to schedule a time to get a price from Legends in Aiken SC, but that's far enough away that transportation becomes an issue. My mantra while building this plane was "I don't want want to WIN at Oshkosh, I just want to GO to Oshkosh." So who do y'all like for a good, not necessarily prize-winning, paint job? thanks, Robert Dickson RV-6A 102 hours Carrboro, NC ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:00:34 AM PST US From: "James E. About 3-4 weeks ago, a friend of mine got his RV6A done there. He had flown it before painting as well. The shop normally does "big" planes but the owner is giving it a try on the RVs. He was very open in saying he was learning (each airplane has its nuances when it comes to painting) and was very open to the plane owner and me assisting with the "take apart and put back". I think you want to be there for that as a builder. They are not just learning how to do planes. It just that they haven't been focused on RVs. The good news is that there were several planes in the shop the entire time, so you know they must be doing something right. My friend told me he is happy with the job. There were even some things he was going to accept but the Legends owner told him to bring the plane back and they re-did some work. My friend lives in Charleston and could not be there everyday but I was able to fly over (I am in Columbia), help him take it apart (along with a Legends guy), visit during the process and help them put it back together. I think they know now that builders are probably even more so picky than the "big plane" owners :-). But never did I hear a complaint from them. The lady that is in charge of touch up etc probably put it best (with a sincere Southern hospitality smile) ... "It's your plane and you are paying all this money so whatever it takes to make you satisfied with it is what we are here to do. We want you to leave here happy." Finally, if you decide to go there and need a hand taking the plane apart and putting it together, let me know. If I have some time I will fly over and give a hand. Also, I have **NO** financial or otherwise connection to this operation. When I get my current project finished, I *might* get it done there or at Eagle in Columbia (where I keep another plane). The owner of Legends used to run the (HUGE) completions shop at Eagle Aviation before he came across the opportunity to go into business for himself James | -----Original Message----- | From: owner-rvsoutheast-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner- | rvsoutheast-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Robert Dickson | Sent: Sunday, May 08, 2005 8:52 AM | To: rvsoutheast-list@matronics.com | Subject: RVSouthEast-List: paint shops | | --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Robert Dickson | | It's time to get this project painted and I'm wondering who you guys | have used that might be convenient to central NC. We have the same friend it turns out, and I have examined his paint job pretty closely and have heard about his experience with legends every step of the way. I think I'd be happy with having them paint my plane but have been having a little trouble finding a mutually convenient time to let them look at it, what with crappy weather and Cliff being out sick. I'm going to try once again tomorrow. The distance is a bit of a problem but I can probably live with that. I can't possibly be there every day - really I'm a lot more likely to drop it off, spending a day or two taking things apart, and then see it again when it's time for it to be put back together. It's about a 5 hour drive I figure down to Aiken so I'm not going to be running down there every day or two. And they'd have the only plane I own. . . I really just thought I ought to get some more thoughts about shops that might possibly be more convenient. thanks again for your thoughts. PapaJuliette was painted in pieces at an automotive shop here in the Columbia area. Dupont ChromaStar. The prep work was done by my partner Patty and the top coat was shot at the auto shop. You probably get the best color choices with automotive paint but I think it is difficult to beat Jet-Glo or Acro-Glo for durability.
