Len,
Looks like I will not be able to make the formation clinic. Work is
getting in the way of fun.

Time to change the oil so I went up for 1/2 hour of aerobatics to warm
the oil. Good time except my 1/2 roll to inverted is fair, 1/2 roll to
upright sucks! Need more practice.
Anyway, the oil was draining and I took a sample for analysis. As the
remainder drained I did my usual visual inspection of the engine. One
of the items I always check is the "Emergency air inlet", that flapper
door on the bottom of the airbox that is held closed with a magnet.
Guess what, the magnet housing was missing! The magnet was stuck to the
flapper door.
Jon Ross called me about 6 weeks ago with the same problem, seems the
rivets pulled through the fiberglass. The housing and 2 rivets are
nowhere to be found as was Jon's case. Jon's engine suffered no damage.
A visual inspection in the cylinders is now in order. An eyball on the
top of the pistons should suffice if I can't find a borescope to borrow.
The oil analysis will also be a good indicator. Hopefully, the rivets
simply pulled out with the housing and fell out the bottom of the cowl.
Since I had to get home I didn't have time to pull the filter and look
it over. Guess this all gives me something to do on Sunday.
For the record, the engine has 201 hours since the door was installed.
Jon had less than 100 hours on his. I plan on removing the door and
glassing over the hole. The risk of a blocked inlet and alternate air
is slimmer than this fix. I have heard of at least two others that have
had this problem! If you have the mod, I highly suggest you remoove it!
I'll keep you posted.
