I'll be coming with Steve Glassgow and I have two tubes. My wife would like to

I predict that in the next couple of days ... some type of Northeaster will
come down bringing strong T storms and heavy rain in the NC & VA areas ... or

A tropical depression will form off the coast of NC extending inland just
north of Roanoke, Va producing low visibility and poor flying conditions ... or

A low in the Gulf will quickly form developing into a hurricane by landfall
on Thursday night then quickly moving up the east coast on a direct path over

Clifton Forge, Va with expected arrival Saturday morning ...

THERE IS NO WAY "STORMY" IS GOING TO HAVE GREAT WEATHER !!!

I have a desparate need for a new forward bulkhead used to mount Van's
spinner. Mine no longer fits since having the prop serviced, so I need to
fit and drill a new one. Getting one from Van's will take a week if they
are in stock. I know the odds are slim, but does anyone near 8A7 have one
they are not using? I will replace it, of coarse.

      Larry,
When we had our prop OH'd....they spin the outter cup a little different and
it moves the 4 hole alignment.....it looked bad at first and we had all
kinds of thoughts about rotating 90 degrees and drilling new holes etc
etc....but once we looked close....we only needed to file the existing holes
a little elongated to make them align.....such a little bit that the washer
under the bolthead covered the elongated holes.
      Hope this helps,
      Bob Martin
      Louisa Va.
ps...tell us about the servicing......what did they find wrong? what did it
cost? besides your time of course.

My screw holes are off by about 5 minutes, too far to fudge I think.
Hartzell said they've heard of this before on RV's. There was another
lucky guy in Ohio just last month. The Hartzell spinner assembly is
different somehow to avoid this very thing.

The service was a reseal. It turns out that the "quad seal" was pinched
during original assembly. So far it's cost me 10 days downtime and
$503...and still counting. We have a trip planned to the coast
Friday...look like we may need to rely on the Volvo instead.
      Disappointing...

Never mind having enough BBQ for this crowd; I'm beginning to wonder if I can scrounge
enough tubes :-) A very good problem to have!

FWIW, beach rafts and inflatable Barney Dinosaur figures, etc, might work in a
pinch. Nothing beats the rugged truck tire tube for all-around service on the
river, though. I've even floated the river once in just a life vest, dragging
my butt the whole way, but I won't do it again ;-)

      Larry,

I had this problem. I just assembled the spinner and drilled new
holes in the FWD bulkhead. Then, disassembled and put in new nut
      plates.

It is not pretty but it is out of site and it works.

I considered that, but the existing holes are too close to the new ones.
They're close enough that the new and old platenut holes would overlap a
little. I'll look at it again try rotating the bulkhead 90 and 180
      degrees.

      Thanks,

      Larry
500 is better than 1700 but I feel your pain as it is a new one too.
Hearing from Ken and your prop shop's comments, this is not an uncommon
      problem.
I just checked Vans web store:
      # SPINNER, C/S-13 This is the standard spinner kit for all constant speed
models. The rear bulkhead is 13 inches in diameter. The spinner cone and
rear bulkhead are the same components used on the fixed pitch models.
      # SPINNER, FP-13 This is the standard spinner kit for all fixed pitch
installations today. The rear bulkhead is 13 inches in diameter.

Seems he doesn't list the part seperately....but from the discription, that
is the only part different from the FP spinner. Maybe we should make Vans
aware of this problem so he can list the bulkhead seperately in the store
and put a story in the newsletter that this misallignment of the front nose
cup of the serviced c/s hubs don't always align and may need to be replaced.
When I was scratching my head about what to do to ours...an older aviation
person counseled me no not just drilling 4 more new holes as it would weeken
the bulkhead...so I was pondering was to fill-in the holes or add a
reinforcing plate.......but once I actually marked how much I needed to
move, it was only a little bit, as previously posted.
I liked Kens idea but my holes weren't off enough for the new holes to miss
      the old holes completely.
Did you send it to Hartzel in Ohio?? and if you did, why didn't they fix it
      under warranty??
      Good Luck,
      Bob Martin

So far, the weatherman is saying high of 89 degrees (that's ideal tubing weather
:-) and 20% precip chance with partly cloudy skies. Too early to get a wind
forecast or to predict am fog, pm convective T-storm activity. You're not _jealous,_
      are you, Leggs?

Let me just throw out for consideration that the river is enjoyable as a wading
or sitting-in-a-lawn-chair with just your feet in the water experience... we
do that about 10 x as often as we take a float trip. With the river so close
by, it's hard not to get in and relax for a few hours between work and suppertime.
Those for whom 90 minutes in an inner tube bouncing through some occasional
very tame rapids sounds like too much adventure are welcome to enjoy the "River
Picnic" aspect, sitting in a lawn chair with iced tea, waiting for us to
arrive at the take-out point. Please come prepared to at least get your feet
wet, even if tubing and getting your butt wet isn't for you :-) My 3 golden
retrievers wil be most glad to keep you company, and will retieve all the rocks
you care to toss their way.

Larry, I watched and talked to the mechanics at the prop shop in burlington
as they OH my prop. The outer hub is not torqued so you could tigthen it up
some more if that will help. You can do this by using a bar with two holes in
it and run bolts into the hub. This is the way m&m does it.Maybe you can
adjust it to your benfit without a new bulk head.

Wow.....That is good information.......I was afraid to move mine, as I

Ahrg! This conflicts with what I've been told by Hartzell and US
Propeller. Hartzell said it could be adjust like you said, but would have
to be taken back to the prop shop and done on "the table". The prop shop
said "that will never torque down to the same spot. Every RV we've
overhauled has had that problem." So, being a card-carrying wimp
especially when it comes to mega-dollar, lift support systems such as
propellers, I've ordered a new bulkhead. It $hould be here in the
      morning.

It was done by US Prop in Gibsonville, NC., who said there was no chance
at warrenty service since I bought it so long ago. But after a couple
calls to Hartzell, and since it was an original assembly type of problem,
they are going to cover the labor costs. Good deal.

I would but he thinks he is a water dog, which is a problem because he
can't swim and just sinks right to the bottom. It is the
funniest/scariest thing I have ever seen.

We hope everyone has a great time and a safe trip!

      Stormy,

From the sounds of it, you will get the Pmag's installed, tested, and
flying just in time to help me with mine, which should be in, oh, two
      more years. ;-)

BTW, I won't be needing a inner tube, I'll be busy riveting.

Sorry to hear that, Ken. I had an episode of engine making metal once. It's a

wading or sitting-in-a-lawn-chair with just your feet in the water experience...

we do that about 10 x as often as we take a float trip. With the river so close

by, it's hard not to get in and relax for a few hours between work and
suppertime. Those for whom 90 minutes in an inner tube bouncing through some
occasional very tame rapids sounds like too much adventure are welcome to enjoy

wet, even if tubing and getting your butt wet isn't for you :-) My 3 golden

you care to toss their way.

I would but he thinks he is a water dog, which is a problem because he
can't swim and just sinks right to the bottom. It is the
funniest/scariest thing I have ever seen.

We hope everyone has a great time and a safe trip!

Mine is available. It is however for a fixed pitch wood prop. Does that
      help?

I have a desparate need for a new forward bulkhead used to mount Van's
spinner. Mine no longer fits since having the prop serviced, so I need to
fit and drill a new one. Getting one from Van's will take a week if they
are in stock. I know the odds are slim, but does anyone near 8A7 have one
they are not using? I will replace it, of coarse.

      Len & Tad -

Thanks for the offers. I've was able to use my existing one by rotating it
90` and drilling new holes, as Ken suggested earlier. Of coarse this was
AFTER I had already ordered a replacement from Van's, overnight $hipping
      too.

Everything is reassembled and ready for a test run and flight tomorrow. I'm
hoping for zero leaks and everything is still balanced...
