I predict that in the next couple of days ... some type of Northeaster will
come down bringing strong T storms and heavy rain in the NC & VA areas ... or

A tropical depression will form off the coast of NC extending inland just
north of Roanoke, Va producing low visibility and poor flying conditions ... or

A low in the Gulf will quickly form developing into a hurricane by landfall
on Thursday night then quickly moving up the east coast on a direct path over

Clifton Forge, Va with expected arrival Saturday morning ...

THERE IS NO WAY "STORMY" IS GOING TO HAVE GREAT WEATHER !!!

Hey, gang. The 3rd Annual looks like it's a "go," despite Len's Lennish skepticism
      about the weather.

The current forecast is for mostly sunny with a 90F daytime high, which will make
for a nice picnic and river day. Winds should be light and ceilings high,
just the way we like 'em.

      http://usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?sta=KROA&model=avn&state=VA&Submit=Get+Forecast

Here's the link to our listing on Airnav, in case anyone needs directions. There's
even a window for entering your home field identifier and getting a bearing
and distance to our place, as well as pages for searching out the cheapest
fuel enroute. Click here for GPS COORDINATES:

      http://www.airnav.com/airport/12VA

We will be expecting arrivals from 10am till noon on Saturday, but feel free to
come earlier. Our multicom is 122.85. I'm using a handheld radio, so range
is very limited by local terrain. You may not hear a reply to your calls until
you are 3 miles out. Panic not...

There is always the possibility of confusing my strip with the neighbor's airfield
next door. The strips are parallel and only about 0.3 miles apart. Approaching
Hop-Along from the southeast, for runway 32, we will be on the left, while
Riverwood airstrip is on the right. My hangar and house are both easily visible
on the right side of the strip at the far end; my neighbor's hangar at
Riverwood is on the left of his runway, and his house is generally hidden by trees.
My airstrip extends all the way to the road; his stops one hayfield short
of the road. Numerous highly-visible white plastic-wrapped round bales are
stored all over our farm, while next door the hay is all indoors. This should
enable you to tell the two places apart, but keep in mind that no one has ever
been shot for landing at Riverwood by accident.

Anticipate runway 32 for landing, and 14 for departure. This uses the natural
slope and most open approach to best advantage. Orange windsock is mid-field
on the right hand side. Don't turn right off the runway until you pass the blaze-orange
/ blue cone taxiway marker. There's a ditch before that point.

      Schedule of activities:

10:00-12:00 Arrivals, fellowship, croquet, frisbee, horseshoes
      12:00 BBQ Lunch buffet
2:00 shuttle to river put-in for the tubers; everyone not tubing but wanting to
wade or hang out at the riverfront can walk 1/8 mile to the take-out point behind
      the house.
4:00 exit river, change clothes, depart for home.

      What to bring:

~truck-size inner tube (inflate once you get here) if tubing. We have a few spares,
      but no promises ;-)
~lawn chair (if you have room in your plane) for each person
~towel, change of clothes, as needed
      ~sunblock
~shoes you can get wet - ***very important.*** You will want foot protection while
wading or tubing; the rocks are mostly smooth but still hard to walk on without
sandals or tennis shoes. You will stub your toes otherwise!
~baseball cap (helpful to keep gnats out of your eyes)
~camera - so we can post pics for the rest of the gang

Attendance so far - the following "internet folks" have replied affirmatively as
      of this morning:

Leggett, Len & Donna - need tubes
      Glasgow, Steve - has tube
Shrek, Ron (& wife?) has tube, may need one more
Craig C-172 - tubing intentions unknown
      Metclafe, Bob (+1) - need 2 tubes
Martin, Bob & Larry - not tubing
Rose, Joe (+1) - need one tube
Ensing, Dale (+1) - has tubes
McBride, Rick & wife - not tubing

There are other locals expected as well - looks like a good group. I think I have
enough food on order; going to Sam's Club tonight for more victuals. Contact
      me here if you haven't RSVP'd yet but are coming.  How 'bout it, Rich Reynolds;
      are you in or out?

This is going to be so much fun, I may have to offer a reprise on July 4 for those
who can't join us on the 25th.

a little unsure of the runway length at Hop A Long. If your

Sorry, Scott. Neighbor's strip is 2000 feet and has trees at both ends. Mine
is a full 2150' surveyed length and has no obstacles at either end (disregard
what AirNav says on that subject.) Plus you have a 40 foot height differential
between the two ends, and you land uphill.

      What are you flying?

I'm in an Extra 300L, and Barry in a Giles 202. Your field
is actually sounding doable if the winds are right. I
thought it to be shorter, more level, and with obstructions.
I'll do some ciphering and some practice at Miller and let

      Brother Len,

Let me suggest you rephrase your title a bit, here.

You mean to say, of course, that your back seat is "taken," or perhaps "occupied."

Let me explain how I know this. Tonight, our family went on a shopping trip (for
picnic grub for Saturday, mostly). This included a stop at the Target store
for my wife to make a clothing return. You can see where this is going.

"I'd like to return this. please. It's too small," she explained politely to the
      clerk.

"How do you know it's too small," said a smart-alec voice that sounded alot like
I was speaking, "maybe the shirt's the right size and you're..." My daughter's
hand clapped over my mouth admonishingly.

      "Daddy!"

That was good for a chuckle at the time, but now I am sleeping alone tonight.
So you see why I cringe at your suggestion above.

Just trying to help, here, brother.

You guys have GOT to come! Especially if that Giles 202 is the Primal Fear I saw
at Green Sea a few weeks ago.

I won't feed you unless we get an aerobatic demonstration (and I get a ride!)

Of course, the decision must rest with you, safety-wise.

May reason and cool heads prevail; but get your butts over here on Saturday :-)

I'm in an Extra 300L, and Barry in a Giles 202. Your field
is actually sounding doable if the winds are right. I
thought it to be shorter, more level, and with obstructions.
I'll do some ciphering and some practice at Miller and let
      you know ASAP. Thanks, Scott
