      Well Len,

It looks like you are off only by a *little* bit to the South.

I am watching the development of the "Tropical Wave" off the coasts of
Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. It is raining now about halfway
      between Columbia and Charleston.

      Forecast 60% chance of thunderstorms.

      Hmmmmm ....

Haven't discussed this with Patty yet but we are planning to be there but
      MIGHT get "unplanned" out.

      | I predict that in the next couple of days ... some type of Northeaster
      | will
      | come down bringing strong T storms and heavy rain in the NC & VA areas
      | ... or
      |
      | A tropical depression will form off the coast of NC extending inland just
      | north of Roanoke, Va producing low visibility and poor flying conditions
      | ... or
      |
      | A low in the Gulf will quickly form developing into a hurricane by
      | landfall
      | on Thursday night then quickly moving up the east coast on a direct path
      | over
      | Clifton Forge, Va with expected arrival Saturday morning ...

The plane will do it, but I'm just not good enough to be sure
that I can do it every time. Planning on being better by next
year. Practice, Practice, Practice... Eventually will get to

Returned home after almost 4 weeks absence. Had some excitement with a brake line
failure and resulting fire, fortunately both aircraft and I were undamaged
although the right wheel pant and tire are toast. Sending photos to Larry for

      Len,

that's the first time I've tubed the Cowpasture with a fine cigar (or any other
kind) in my hand. Not sure everyone else appreciated them as much as we did,
but hey, if you can't enjoy fine tobacco outdoors, where else is left? (Don't
ever try this in your RV).

Thanks for thinking of me and packing a spare ;-)

What else are we going to come up with this summer to pass the time until Ocracoke
on Labor Day? I know, I know, don't tell me: OSH. I showed the SERV colors
at SnF; your turn this summer at AirVenture - do a good job for me.

Donna, especially honored that you ladies came along. Great to see you again.
You're a saint for putting up with the guys.

Thanks so much for the great day ... really had a good time. Think we
counted 16 planes ... 10 - 11 people took the 2 hour tube ride down the river

      ...
water was nice ... very VERY relaxing ... thought I was going to fall asleep
      flying home !!!

Again thanks ... we had a blast !!

Your tubes are safe with me. I think I counted 13 tubes in the hangar whereas
I started with 9, so this is becoming a popular trick.

We simply must do that again. River season lasts till about a week after Labor
Day, then starts getting too cool, so I'm open to suggestions if a year is too
      long to wait.

Glad you and Cappy made it home okay.

Thanks so much for putting on a really great day of flying, floating and
fun. I seem to have "left" my tubes in your hangar so I guess I will have

Great to have you two, Dale. Next time come earlier or stay later.

I finally got to see that big front porch at capacity, like we envisioned when
we first sketched it out. Wonderful.

I hope everyone had enough to eat. Three guesses what my fam had for dinner tonight.

      Vibes:

I am sorry that our most qualified BBQ judge was unable to make the event, and
moreso now that I hear that we were deprived of Patty's cookies :-(

Len was heard on the river bragging that he had been right about the low pressure
"somewhere in the south" right on schedule. He is shameless, no way around
      it.

You would have liked the chance to meet my Dad and discuss the red-tailed P-51
pilots of WWII. A special treat for me was the unexpected appearance of a neighbor
I had never met before whom my Dad just met and found out was an 8th AAF
vet. The guy drove up in dress uniform with pictures of himself in WWII and
a picture of a B-17 labeled with his crew position (right waist gunner). You
could tell this meant alot to him. He's one of those greatest-generation vets
who until recently couldn't bring himself to talk about what he had seen in aerial
combat; now he and Dad are doing just that. I can only imagine what these
men have seen and experienced, and there are fewer of them left every day.
I was so caught up in the moment, hosting the party and having fun, that the
real significance of my neighbor's visit didn't sink in until later. The man
doesn't even really like airplanes, but he wanted us carefree young aviators to
see him as he once was, and to breathe the same air
        with folks who might understand...

Well, there will be a next time, James, so you and Patty plan on it, okay?

It looks like I'm going to be eating Amish pork barbecue until I start to oink
and lie in the mud. You want me to send you some?

      Stormy,
As you know by now, Patty and I got "weathered out".

<< Seems that Len's HOODOO worked on us. :-) >>

I was on the phone with Bill trying to decide and it started RAINING!!

With our beautiful WOOD prop, we are careful not to get caught in too much rain
but we could have gotten out. The problem is/was getting BACK and Patty must
      be back tonight.

We were looking forward to it. :-( Patty even had baked a batch of special
      cookies.

      Hopefully next time.

Some of you were wondering what that tall tower was beside the river where we put
in for the tubing trip today; it's a river stage gauge, and it reports to a
satellite which makes the data available on the web, thus:
      http://www.americanwhitewater.org/gauges/id/589/

As you can see, we were tubing on a water height of about 1.8 feet, which is slightly
low for this time of year, and slightly lower than my bottom would prefer.

The anomaly on June 20 probably represents a body-dump from the bridge by the local
      redneck mafia.

Future fly-in's at Hop-Along may now be predicated on good weather AND a river
stage of greater than or equal to 1.8 feet :-)

BTW, I also was asked about the airfield name... well, it's what your plane does
when you roll out here, right? Another theory is that Hop-A-Long Cassidy was
a singing cowboy hero of TV, movies and comic book fame played by an actor named:
William Boyd (no relation). And that's your trivia for tonight. If you
      don't believe me, Google it.

did Sunday a couple of weeks ago (or was that last week?) on the

By the way, three of the five guys he had on there were at the event I am
