My old prop gave up the ghost this weekend. I've ordered a new Aymar-
Demuth but due to lead time I'm also in the market for a spare to fly
with until the new prop is ready.
Anyone have a good used prop suitable for use on an RV4 powered by a
Lycoming O-360-A1A, 180hp?

May try again later... last night even 2 at a time was too large an attachment
(2megapixel photos). Yes, I went to uploads first, clicked add photos, brought
me back to the original page with no more upload buttons...

Sending to me will be fine.
You went to the uploads folder first? You have to add new pictures there.

Yesterday I got a frantic call at work from my teenage daughter who was home alone,
wanting to know if I knew anyone on a "big yellow motorcycle." Seems an
imposing biker was knocking on our front door and she didn't recognize him, wasn't
about to open the door or even let on that she was home. I had her stay
on the cordless phone while she slipped around and made sure all the doors were
locked. When she checked the back doors, she spotted a plane by the hangar
and the biker was down there talking to the pilot. This made me feel a little
better, since her description of the plane made me think it was a local. She
went to meet them, cell phone in hand, called me back and let me speak with the
pilot, who introduced himself, apologized for dropping in unannounced, said
he was from Georgia and staying at the local state park for the week and could
he tie down here and maybe meet me face to face one evening and perhaps take
some family members for airplane rides Thursday? I
was totally flabbergasted, and still a bit concerned for my daughter's safety.
I agreed to let him tie down and asked him to leave a cell phone number ("I
doubt it will work up here") and asked that he come see me to discuss these arrangements.
To my daughter's relief, they rode off together on the bike, and
haven't been heard from since.
I now have a show-quality CH-701 with 61 Hobbs hours on it "tied down" in my front
yard (with 6 inch yellow plastic tent stakes that I could pull loose with
maybe 5 pounds of force), waiting to weather today's predicted thunderstorms.
It's registered to an A&P for a major airline, who offers online to help build
Zenith kitplanes and has some strange hits on Google as a lawsuit plaintiff
(against the .gov).
Althought I wish we still lived in the romantic barnstorming era when we need not
have feared strangers dropping in while on a cross-country adventure, the fact
is we live in the modern age of internet research and random violence. It's
a scary thing to have strangers arrive at your door by air and land when you're
a 19 year old girl home alone and 1/2 mile from the nearest road or neighbor.
It's inexcusable not to contact and obtain permission from a private airstrip
owner before just showing up there "for a week" because it happens to be
close to your destination. I wish I could travel x/c and get away with the kind
of stunt this guy pulled and think nothing of it, but I'd be nuts to expect
a warm welcome if I did. He may turn out to be a wonderful human being, woefully
lacking in common courtesy, but at present he's a stranger interloping in
my front yard. What would you do?
I especially want to hear form the airpark redsidents as to how your association
handles this kind of liability risk and intrusion. Obviously, giving rides
to his family will be out of the question. My daughter asked me to be sure to
lock all the house and garage doors before I left for work; this has given her
a case of the willies.

Stormy's wife called the local paper on a whim Saturday morning to let the local
beat reporter know what was happening at the fly-in, and now she's pictured
in the paper beside Stormy's plane, which she once dubbed "The Other Woman," looking
like she actually helped build it. Stormy was on the river at the time
of the newspaper interview, so the story is all from his wife's point of view.
I kid you not, she made front page top-of-the-fold, lead story with two color pictures
in Monday's paper. Must have been a slow news day! We were thinking they'd
run it as filler sometime during the week.
Perhaps if we impound our visiting Zenith STOL plane, or the sheriff finds a kilo
of coke in the baggage hold, we can make the papers twice in one week :-)
The story will probably appear this evening on the paper's website, as they seem
to run the online version a day behind the print version. Google the Virginian
Review and see what happens if you are curious. It's still Saturday's edition
as of now, but maybe in a few hours...

Stormy,
I agree with your comments, but......
If I didn't know you like i do, or wasn't part of this wonderful RV group
thing!!
I might have done the same thing this guy did, not knowing what the
situation was.
Now, it is apparent the motorcycle guy was given directions to your place
from the airplane guy.
assuming they looked at Airnav to find out about your strip, then there is
no excuse about what they did. But if they saw it from the air...and looked
at a road map and found it from there, then maybe they were just taking
there chances on what they would find when they arrived.
The giving rides is a whole nuther issue....
BTW didn't you say "Hop a long" was on the sectional?? I didn't see it! I
have you in our gps's as a user defined waypoint so it isn't a problem, but
we have a chart on the wall in the hanger and it is pretty new and it didn't
show it?? whats up?

Bob- Hop Along made the most recent issue of the Cinci sectional, bat has never
been included before this issue, so maybe that's it. Check the curent map, it
is there; I've seen it myself ;-)
Agree with your comments that the guy on the motorcycle was definitely a part of
the plot and had to get his directions from somewhere, which means they had
oppportunity to track me down and get prior permission.
I wish this was the good old days; I'd love to be a gracious and non-paranoid host
to wayfaring strangers, but the what-if's really bug me here...

Trusting. Yeah, me, too. We were all strangers once.
But, courtesy is there for a practical reason, in this case not worrying me and
my daughter, and later my wife and parents. Mel told me she knew my pocket pistol
wasn't available because I always carry it to work. She had lots of other
options she didn't know the exact whereabouts of. I've since fixed that.
We need to have some more Father-Daughter time at the range; come to think of
it, that's another term for the front yard ;-)

Stormy,
That guy was way out of line. I doubt I would have been that accomodating if it
would have been me. For his sake, I'd let him know his method of arrival was
not appreciated.
I see unknown airplanes at our airpark from time to time, but most don't expect
to stay overnight without prior permission. We encourage guests of residents
to use the runway, but we also discourage local traffic using the runway for
routine training and/or numerous touch and goes. One of the joys of living on
an airfield is having friends with planes drop out of the sky just to say hi,
but too much unknown traffic is not appreciated.
If/when I stop by again..........I'll let you know before I arrive.

Stormy,
It is my opinion that your visitor is out of bounds. If the motorcycle rider
found your place with the aid of the pilot, they could have done that before
landing at Hop-A-Long and talked to you first. The pilot is treading on the
goodwill that most aviation people have for other aviators.
We do have an occasional non-resident airplane land and depart at Aero
Plantation without contacting any of us. Almost impossible to stop that.
But, we allow only residents and their guest to tie down within the
airpark...... at the members home or in the common tie down area. There have
been cases when the general membership decided that a "guest" had over
stayed a normal visit. The resident member was then asked to have the
airplane removed. We are asked occasionally by strangers for permission to
use the runway. The answer is always no. We do have the built-in answer that
the airpark belongs to all the members and therefore permission cannot be
granted by an individual. You might use the insurance thing as your reason
to turn down a request.

Subject: | Conclusion: How would you/your airpark handle this? |
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: sportav8r@aol.com
Well, guys, here's the latest and hopefully final installment in the saga. Emailed
our very own RV-list NTSB man for advice; chatted back and forth all day.
Spoke to two men in two Virginia FSDO's. Did lots of Googling. Decided by
the end of the work day that the man likely was a student pilot with no regard
for courtesy, a disregard for the rules, and a taste for class-action lawsuits.
Decided civil trespass was not something I would sit back and idly abide,
so I called the local DA, who never returned my call. Better luck with the sheriff's
dep't, which advised me to have the local park ranger send the pilot over
here for a chat and then tell him to beat it. But, the sheriff has no jurisdiction
in the state park, so 'round we go trying to find a ranger after hours
to relay the message to the guy.
Pilot gets message, sheriff is summoned, as planned, to be there "in case." Sheriff's
backup arrives. Pilot calls from cell phone, "It's raining hard here."
"Here, too, but come over anyway and let's talk this over." Deputies and I
make small talk on the porch watching the rain. No way am I going to make my
fellow aviator fly in this scum, even if he is treaspassing. Pilot and wife
arrive, mount the porch sheepishly as I assure him I do not intend to charge him
with anything. We make some small talk, I tell pilot he is not welcome to
fly friends for rides from here, and that I might accomodate his plane until the
end of the week as he had wished. "Guess what. The FAA thinks you only have
a student pilot cetificate. Two different FSDO's told me that today." "Well,
those things take some time to be updated." Sheriff asks to see pilot's certificate,
but he doesn't have it on him. "Is it in your plane?" I offer. "No.
It's ...someplace else..." his voice trails off.
"Okay," I announce, "you're leaving here tomorrow at first VFR, understood?"
"Yes, Sir." Cops mosey along to other calls (dinner & do-nuts).
I tell pilot his 6" plastic tent stakes won't secure his shiny new STOL plane against
any gusts and there are more storms predicted tonight. We walk to hangar
and get my titanium tiedowns to screw into the rock hard ground. Not much
joy, but better than before. Pilot explains that he came by earlier in the day
yesterday to ask my permission but no one was home. Then decided to come anyway,
flew his plane over from Hot Springs, and again checked the house, which
is when he scared my teenage daughter to death. He had tried to contact me,
but not the right way (telephone / never heard of AirNav). When unsuccesful at
getting permission, he came anyway - big blunder. Then he couldn't show us
any airman certificate -strike 3.
I felt bad for him (I hate confrontations), but even worse for his future pax if
his judgement is this clouded. He started out by flying into the public airport,
but then found out how convoluted the road from there to the park was, and
decided basing at my place would cut his drive in half. "Besides, I like basing
the plane at private fields and meeting new friends..." Nice try. This
revelation made me feel a little better about it than thinking he lit out from
Georgia, intending all along to terminate his flight here, without calling ahead
to ask. That notion staggered the imagination.
I think "Pilot Doe" knows he made an error and got off on a painfully wrong foot
with me, which is actually quite hard to do. Even though he seemed nice in
person, I wasn't going to relent. He was aware from the newspaper that I had
hosted the fly-in this weekend, but I reminded him they were all invited guests.
I had no idea how much this would disrupt the rhythm of life around here for a
couple of days, and it will be nice to see Mr. Pilot's shiny airplane depart for
wherever tomorrow. He better not take my Ti-downs with him :-) It's really
a shame, since we might have become friends under other circumstances, but he's
going to have to show me that private ticket first. I'm sure it's somewhere...
Then he's got to explain the other stuff I learned on Google, which I will
spare you now...
Man, I hope that plane is gone when I get home tomorrow.
Best to all,
-Stormy

Stormy,
It is my opinion that your visitor is out of bounds.

Thanks Bill. I found that and some other resources online here:

I may take you up on the safety pilot. I have yet to do under the hood
practice in my plane.....
Thanks,
