I'm looking for a GPS for the back seat of my RV-8. The passenger
requesting said GPS is most interested answering questions such as "which
lake is that?" or "which town is that?" instead of "what is the nearest
VOR?" So, I'm thinking of a non-aviation type of GPS. Maybe on of the
hiking ones? Can anyone recommend what to get or what to stay away from?

It's a start... I've got it on TiVO... and although I'm not an evil
pirate person, I could be convinced to loan out my SINGLE individual

You're the ones I have heard from regarding tubing tomorrow. Here's where we stand:
You are welcome to show up any time. I am not promising to be home before 12 as
I have a few errands to run in town. Lunch, if you want us to feed you, will
be beef hot dogs with trimmin's...
A shuttle will run to the river whenever everyone is on premises or at 2:00, whichever
comes first. The float takes about 2 hours door-to-door.
Wx is looking "stormy" or "Lennish" - good chance of afternoon TSTM's and the morning
visibility might be a repeat of Saturday's milk-bottle haze.
I have plenty to do without tubing, so it's no biggie either way whether the adventure
materializes or not. I'm up to my elbows in P-mags right now, happy as
a clam to have a project going.
Bring river-shoes, sunblock, and tubes if you have 'em; we have a dozen if you
don't. Looking forward to meeting whoever shows up. I'll have an ear out on
122.85.

is about the same.
I didn't know you were up in the mountains. I have never flown over the
mountains... Any hints and or tips of advise any of you out the in RV
list-land could offer someone scared of the unknown?

The mountains around Stormy's are just see and avoid......unless it is
windy, then LOOK out or stay away, it can get bumpy, with lift on one side
and downdrafts on the other side. Stormy can give you the real details of
livin in them, wink

Hot springs forcast lower cloud bases....

We flew locally today....LKU to SHD Shenadoah Vally to visit a friend
finishing a Hatz Biplane. The weather sucked big time, just crossing one
ridge!!....no fun at all....but at least we flew.

Hi guys,
I regret being unable to do some tubing at Stormy's this weekend, so I'm
looking for other ways to spend money.
Has anyone successfully used one of the GPS engines powered through the
USB cable with an iPaq?
Comp USA has a DeLorme 12 channel WAAS NMEA GPS that's both powered &
talks through a USB port for around $80. This seems to be a pretty good
deal if it will work with the iPaq, & the street software would be
lagniappe.
I'll probably buy AnywhereMap software to run on it.

Ron,
I had to chuckle at your question.....
I learned to fly at Charlottesville and it is in a big bowl between 2 ridges.....
the local mountains don't really cause us too much alarm in the emergency landing
department, but it does keep us wanting good airplanes....there is usually
a road or a field to land in if needed...have never needed one thank goodness....
But when we cross the real mountains west to Ohio....to visit our Ohio Valley friends,
well, we fly a little higher (actually a lot higher) and think how unfriendly
the mountains are to do a emergency landing into.

I have only flown the " big " stuff for the last few years, and before that
I flew ultralights. When flying a 2 stroke you try to keep a field or
clearing under you at all times just in case - haven't had the troube with 2
strokes I expected but better safe than sorry -
I still fly like that and try to not fly over large wooded areas and other
areas that look like the plane will be a wreck if I have to land there....
I grew up in a town called Franklin North Carolina in the mountains but
never flew there. I just remember there being a lot of trees and not much
for fields and open clearings. Plus I know that what looks like a big flat
field from the air, may in fact be a steep hill that may not be better to
land on than the trees nearby.
Was wondering if the weather is any worse or better in the mountains, how
high do you guys fly in that area etc...
Ben B. gave me a ride in his RV-6 over to Tenn last summer to pick my plane
up from the shop but the clouds were so bad that day we were on top of some,
under others, and needed windsield wipers to really see out so it wasn't
much of a learning experience. When I flew my plane back home I flew down
into Georgia to avoid the hills and then back across South Carolina and
eventually back home to 28A near Charlotte.
I hope to get up there sometime soon myself one day. Floating in the river
sounds like alot of fun. My wife would like to come too, but since my plane
has only two seats, she will have to stay home to watch our son....
