The 196 has almost all of the same displays but doesn't have color or terrain avoidance. Seems like the 196 would be great for your passengers. Also, it has a pilot panel which could be a lifesaver if you should become incapacitated in the front seat. The maps show the names of towns, rivers and major highways in the aviation mode and even more in the automotive mode. The price of both units keeps going down so you could find a great deal. Remember, this is for the non-aviator in the back seat. Size matters - The back seat of the RV-8 is comfortable, but I wouldn't call it spacious. After you ad the booster seat, purse, camera, bottles of water, etc. it's down-right crowded. The latest backpacker type GPSs are barely bigger than the typical cell phone. Aviation ones are usually bulkier. Price - Less than $300 for a color trail/street GPS is pretty good. There are some aviation GPSs that come close to that, but not color. The primo Garmin stuff is more than $1000. That doesn't make sense for this application. Function - Rwy length at the nearest apt and terrain avoidance are indeed important, but I have yet to hear these questions from the back seat. How fast are we going now? How many MPH is that? How much longer till we get there? Is that the mall? are more common questions. Anyway, I'm leaning towards either of these at the moment. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVistac/ http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=1072 I have the Garmin 196 in the panel, and like it a lot. I thought I was going to have to get a gear puller too. I asked an A&P if that was typically required, of coarse he said no. He said some firm taps with the hammer on the shaft (actually the nut unscrewed past the end of the shaft), while holding the EI by the gear would pop it free. I have to admit I was skeptical, and I have to admit it worked..... - Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-rvsoutheast-list-server@matronics.com > [mailto:owner-rvsoutheast-list-server@matronics.com] On > Behalf Of sportav8r@aol.com > Sent: Monday, July 04, 2005 9:47 AM > To: rvsoutheast-list@matronics.com > Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy's > > --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: sportav8r@aol.com > > The P-mag install is a thousand small jobs, Bob, including > getting Bob Barrows to drop in with his gear puller so I can > relocate a drive gear from a magneto to a P-mag. Anyway, I'm leaning towards either of these at the moment. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVistac/ http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=1072 I have the Garmin 196 in the panel, and like it a lot. I could get the 296 and recycle the 196 to the back seat...good for me, but the needs listed above still need to apply. I appreciate the input. - Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com ________________________________ Message 19 ____________________________________ Time: 08:19:05 AM PST US From: Demeylor@aol.com Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy's --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Demeylor@aol.com Fellow SE RV Aviators, Wives & Friends, We're having a party Saturday, July 7 to welcome home our newlywed daughter & her husband and to celebrate their graduation from chiropractic college. Charlie -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [ThorpList] CGI Airshow From: jeffery d houseman Hey Gary and the rest of you, Just wanted to remind everyone about the Cape Girardeau Airshow, coming up July 8, 9, and 10. Everyone who flys in in an experimental and prize (GPS Map 96 or Sigtronics portable intercom), plus get your fuel topped off. You can't beat a deal like that! Friday night will feature Bill Leff and some night parachute drops then a hanger dance. Saturday show starts at 11am until 3pm, and Sunday is from 1 until 5. Friday the field is closed from 2 until 4pm for practice then again for the show from 7pm til 9pm. If you need help finding a room or transportation, let me know. And if you do fly-in, just tell the tower after you land that you want to park with the experimentals on the east ramp. Sure would like to see a few T-18's For more info check out www.capeairfestival.com ps. I cant garantee hanger space in case of weather, but I'm sure I could find room for a couple.
