Hi, fellas.
The P mags are up and running. Started out with 25 degree advance (baseline) and
MAP/rpm-based variable timing mode. Apparently that was too "hot" a set-up
for my engine, as I was seeing way high CHT's and low EGT's , with evidence of
some performance loss as well. Also hearing a louder and much diferent exhaust
note.
Brad at Emagair says none of that is surprising since I'm running a bit of compression
(8.5:1) and auto fuel. He suggested switching the mags to the default
magneto emulation setting (fixed 25 degree timing)and try it out. I did that,
and everything is now behaving like I'm accustomed to. Starts are quicker with
the multi-strike spark either way.
I'm going to collect some data in this mode before going to 20 degree advance variable
timing mode, which is the other user-programmable option. I might be
able to get still other timing options by indexing the mags to something besides
TDC on the flywheel, but we're not there yet. Apparently, having the P-mags
advance their timing all the way out to 39 degrees BTC under some regimes is
not a good idea in my particular engine set-up. The 20 degree mode would limit
that excursion to 34 degrees max. Those last 5 degrees might have made all
the trouble. I was seeing CHT's of 439 in climb and I've never topped about
420 before even in hot summer, and crusie CHT's of over 425 at 75% power! Very
glad the reversion to fixed timing at least cured that. Now we nibble away
at the equation in true experimental fashion. Brad is being very helpful and
responsive to all my concerns. I am optimistic that this will be the right move
for me and a big hit with the experimental crowd.

A special notice to AOPA members in the Charlotte, North Carolina area
==> ATTENTION PILOTS <==
FAA TO ESTABLISH TFR OVER BELMONT ON FRIDAY
AOPA is sending this message to advise pilots in and near Belmont,
North Carolina, that the FAA is expected to issue a notam restricting
flight in the area during President Bush's planned visit on Friday,
July 15.
Based on information from press reports, the president is scheduled to
be in Belmont for an event on Friday. AOPA anticipates that the notam
will establish a large temporary flight restriction (TFR) limiting
general aviation flight. Typically, these presidential travel-related
TFRs are 60 nautical miles in diameter (30-nm radius) and contain one
or more smaller general aviation no-fly zones. AOPA will post the notam
on AOPA Online ( http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/notams.html ) as soon as
possible after it is issued. A graphic will also be available.
Because TFR airspace frequently changes, AOPA strongly encourages
pilots to obtain a briefing and CHECK NOTAMS before every flight.
TFR violators will be intercepted and forced to land.
