Got the call about a missing aircraft late last night. We launched a search and found a 182 in the ridge line. Turned out was a mockup. -- a readiness exercise! We didn't know this until the ground crew got on site. Looked very real. Was a relief to learn no actual crash, but what a feeling when we thought it was all for real... Wayne8A Attention VA Wing: This redcap mission was opened at 1105PM local. We have a missing aircraft somewhere between Flat Rock VOR (FAK) and Shenandoah Regional Airport (SHD). LtCol Lee Younger is the IC for the mission. He requires qualified mission base staff to report tomorrow morning at Wing Headquarters (Richmond/Chesterfield airport (FCI)) at 0600 local, and qualified aircrews manning all available wing aircraft to report to FCI as near 0600 local as possible. Qualified GTLs and GTMs who are "geographically" available should gear up and be standing by CAP vehicles (if possible) as early in the morning after 0600 local as possible and call mission base (assume Wing HQ phone number - 804-743-2220) as soon thereafter as possible for assignment and release. And with it so hazy, I could believe it actually happened. (Len and I went to Mountain Air in Burnsville, NC this morning. Uncomfortably hazy!) - Larry Bowen, RV-8 120 Hrs. Former NC CAP pilot. Turned down a chance to fly my Dad to Manteo for a day hangin' out with his trawler fishing buddies and all the free sea food we could haul back in the RV - just didn't care to fly in all that haze and embedded TSTMs - at least without my autopilot and Garmin 396/ XM Wx installed. Maybe some other day. Man, I hate hazy hot & humid. I used to think February and March were the best months to schedule aircraft maintenance downtime. Starting to re-think that philosophy this summer! Kidding about the 396 (for now), but I really do have a Trio EZ-Pilot on its way here. -Stormy trolling eBay for that elusive GPSMAP 296 under a kilobuck. -----Original Message----- From: Larry Bowen Subject: RE: RVSouthEast-List: Civil Air Patrol --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" Sounds like a really good exercise.
