We grabbed our gear, some charcoal, and were grilling at the state park by 6pm! The runway at Hattaras is about 1/4 mile from the state park's front entrance. We had no trouble walking up and securing a campsite at the last minute, although I suppose on holiday weekends that wouldn't work. The amenities were adequate, and the walk to the beach short and delightful over a boardwalk-style sidewalk through a marsh. Dennis's one complaint was the traffic that extended until all hours of the night, but I slept well. GRIN. The next morning, we took a sunrise dip in the ocean, then cleaned up, broke camp, and flew down to Ocracoke for breakfast. I suggest you bring walking shoes if you are going to do that hike (grin--I'd only brought beach sandals, but persevered!). It's probably just over half a mile, but it felt further since by then it was 9am or so and getting hot. We walked to the Pony Island Restaurant for breakfast, where service and prices were outstanding. We got back to the plane in time to stop in Washington for some of their precious fuel (sigh) and home to Farmville just in time for the EAA Chapter 960 meeting, where the Potters supplied fresh crab and fried shrimp for lunch. So, all we did was fly and eat--what fun! Bill, If you are planning to do it soon you may want to put the square hole in your panel for the altitude hold button now while you have everything disassembled. I have the 3-view drawings of the button and its' mount if you decide to go that route. Trio sent it to me when I told them I wanted to be ready when the unit arrives. > > I don't like to hit the household budget with too much avionics at one time- keeps me below the domestic radar intercept threshold . As it is, I'm bidding on Garmin GPSmap 296's on eBay using the three month same as cash plan from Paypal. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we're putting #2 kid through college without borrowing funds, so it's working so far. > > My dream panel will have GRT EFIS's one day, afer they get the bugs ironed out. I monitor the GRT EFIS list, and am aware of the many issues still in play. By the time I'm ready to play, GRT will offer a display comparable to MountainScope's pixel resolution and synthetic terrain view, or I'll sadly be forced to take my cash wad elsewhere. That's a field where the ferment is considerable, and the real value will emerge months/years later, when Dynon nips harder at GRT and BMA's heels as they seem to be already. I have come to realize I won't get full flexibility out of the GRT EFIS unless I buy an ARINC frequency-agile NAV/COM/ILS radio to go with it, and boy do they push up the price of the avionics suite. Bill, The Garmin(Apolo) SL-30 Nav/Comm interfaces with the GRT EFIS with a single serial interface. No ARINC interface ($475) is required for this setup. You will need ARINC however if you want traffic interface with the GTX330 transponder or if you have the Garmin 430 or 530... and now you are talking some serious bucks! > All in all, it's a heady time to be in homebuilding and experimental aviation: the golden age of avionics. > > -Stormy > > do not archive > > -----Original Message----- > From: Ron Schreck > To: rvsoutheast-list@matronics.com > Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy Auto Pilot question > > > --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Ron Schreck" > > Bill, > > I ordered Trio's altitude hold autopilot in May. One more patched-on sub panel won't hurt anything :-) I have a new blank panel waiting in the basement, for later replacement of the current one with a nice clean-looking "professional" panel, once I collect and patch-in all the avionics pieces I want to have in there. Until then, I'm not sweating the "looks" thing, or the metal shavings that sprinkle down all over the avionics from cutting new holes in an old panel (gulp!) ...call me "Sparky" or "Shorty" :-) -Stormy -----Original Message----- From: Ron Schreck Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy Auto Pilot question --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Ron Schreck" ----- Original Message ----- From: Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy Auto Pilot question > --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: sportav8r@aol.com > > Ron- > > One day at a time :-) > > I'd be delighted to have the alt hold in time to get the hundred dollars off (Dec. 5th) from Trio. What a great time! Lori, congrats on your perseverance, especially the hard Ocracoke miles walked in flip-flops and hot sun. Dennis is getting you back for dragging him up here to the fly-in the morning after he got home from the AFB :-) How neat that your daughter is so hooked on aviation that she'd brave Advanced Air Academy :-) You guys have a blessed month and we'll see you in September one way or another. Watch your cholesterol after all that shrimp and crabmeat. My Dad and I are waiting patiently for a break in the hazy hot so far, every weekend morning here's been IFR till noon for the past month! -Stormy Autopilot going in this week -----Original Message----- From: Lori Millsap Subject: RVSouthEast-List: Hattaras Report --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Lori Millsap" Stormy's post yesterday reminded me that I'd forgotten to report our trip from last Friday...and you guys may be the only ones who would understand! *grin* With one child still at EAA Advanced Air Academy (she's home now, with welding projects in tow!) and the other child in grandparent-land, Dennis and I decided at 3:48pm last Friday afternoon that camping over at Cape Hattaras might be fun. Hey guys, I am new to the RV list and recently purchased a RF7A QB from an individual. I was trying to fit up my HS/elevator and noticed that when clamped in place, there was almost no travel of down elevator allowed due to the down stop (F711E). When I called Vans, they told me that this piece had to be trimmed and almost seemed insulted by the question since this information was in my instructions. Well either I'm a complete idiot or I am missing something because I have been completely through my instructions and drawings and I have found no reference to this nor have I found any information on elevator defection limits. I am concerned that maybe I am missing some of my instruction manual. Can anyone out there tell me where this info is located? ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 01:27:34 PM PST US From: Lenleg@aol.com Subject: RVSouthEast-List: Re: (no subject) --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Lenleg@aol.com In a message dated 8/13/2005 3:55:48 P.M. I believe it is in the final assembly part of the manual ... it gives you a measurement in degrees that the elevators should travel both up and down and you trim to allow that. For that application, I feel the extra bucks for the 296 is a good deal; about $1250 currently on eBay. -----Original Message----- From: Lenleg@aol.com Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Stormy Auto Pilot question --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Lenleg@aol.com In a message dated 8/12/2005 8:58:41 P.M.
