Need an excuse to go flying?
EAA Local Chapter 731 in Hickory is hosting a fly-in
on Saturday September 24th. At present we plan to
host the fly-in at the Morganton - Lenoir airport
(MRN). We hope to have some aircraft judging, food,
and fun. An official flyer will be distributed as
soon as all details are ironed out. Once that happens
I will post an update. Information will also be
available (eventually, but not as of now) on the
chapter webpage: http://www.eaa731.org

Subject: RV-8
Victim ID'd in fatal plane crash
Cheyenne man, 35, was killed Sunday in experimental aircraft
By Tillie Fong, Rocky Mountain News
August 9, 2005
A man killed in the crash of an experimental airplane at the Fort
Collins-Loveland Airport on Sunday has been identified as Jay Schneider, 35,
of Cheyenne.
Schneider died when the Vans RV-8 plane came in on its belly about 1,500
feet west of the airport's north-south runway.
The Larimer County coroner's office conducted the autopsy late Monday.
The pilot, William Sheel, 47, of Greeley, was taken to Denver Health Medical
Center on Sunday. He was in critical condition Monday, said Robyn Roggy, a
family friend.
Schneider was Sheel's son-in-law, Roggy said.
Shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday, the plane apparently landed on its belly,
intact, and there was no fire, witnesses told authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration is starting an investigation, but the
RV-8 is considered an experimental plane because it is home-built, so the
FAA's involvement is limited.
"They're built by the pilot, so you can have somebody miss something in the
process," Allen Kenitzer, spokesman for the region office of the FAA, said
Monday.
He said that last Friday, a similar plane crashed in Priest Lake, Idaho,
resulting in two fatalities. The FAA is also investigating that crash.
Sheel's plane was built last year, but according to Dean Hall, a longtime
friend and pilot, the design for the RV-8 has been around for eight years.
It uses a Lycoming engine, which is also used in commercially made planes
and can reach speeds of more than 200 mph, he said.
"The difference between certificated airplanes and the experimental plane is
that the certificated airplanes were designed 50 years ago, and the
experimental planes have recent design and better performance," Hall said.
"Typically, they're faster and more efficient because the design is cleaner
aerodynamically."
Hall said that Sheel had been flying the RV-8 for the past year.
"I examined it when it was finished, and I flew in it with him," Hall said.
"It flew very well."
Hall said he has flown in the plane several times since then.
"He's a very fine pilot," he said of Sheel.
According to FAA records, Sheel held a commercial pilot license in 2001 and
held a general aviation license since 2003.
Family members of Sheel and Schneider could not be reached for comment
Monday. Roggy said the family did not want to be interviewed.

I went to Dan C's site and went to his NTSB file for the rv's and read about
it.
Seems to have been a low on fuel, stall accident, but read it for yourself.
