I flew my new Trio EZ pilot A/P with the new GPS connected for the first time yesterday,
and was that ever sweet! Kinda spooky to see invisible hands flying
your airplane for the first time in 500 hours. I'm easily impressed, but having
two brand new boxes in the cockpit with me on a test flight, I couldn't help
but be.
I'm still exploring the capabilities of the Trio, but it tracks a flight plan,
does the emergency 180, and holds a course well, and is a functional wing-leveler
even without GPS input. Installation was very straightforward and uncomplicated.
The Garmin 296 manual took all day Saturday and half the day Sunday to
pore over, but I think I am now capable of putting that unit through most of
its paces. The UPS man brought me a data cable last week for it, and a Panel
Dock form AirGizmos today, so by tonight it should be in my panel like it belongs
there, instead of dangling from a bunch of wires like yesterday ;-)
I had the EZ-Pilot follow a 90-degree turn at a flight plan waypoint, and the overshoot
to the outside of the turn was about 0.8nm at 150 mph, with a secondary
overshoot to the inside of 0.12nm before it locked onto the new heading outbound.
This is no doubt due to the 15 degree bank limiting default setting, so
I will play with the gain a bit on subsequent flights. Thanks, Sam B., for
your earlier suggestion of gain values. I plan to look them up and use them as
starting points.

Stormy,
Thanks for the update...you have been a busy boy!!!
Assuming the wing leveler connection installed in the wing, how was that to
install?
I was thinking about the under the seat install by TruTrak to make it easier
than working in the wing inspection hole.
So I guess you default to LEAD so the rest of us hand fliers can look smooth

I found the wingtip install to go very smoothly, using SafeAir1-supplied parts.
One of the easiest mods I've ever done on the RV. I hate accessing the area
under the seat pans. For some reason, those screws are always a pain to take
in and out, the ribs bend and the plate nuts cross-thread, the edge screws are
too close to the fuselage sides to get on with a drill/driver, necessitating
the phillips bit in the 1/4" socket wrench trick, etc. I would never want to
install anything there if I had a choice.
Control head was a drop-in replacement in the T/C hole, four screws that mount
from the front with no nuts on the back - yippee!

Hi, Wayne.
My 17 year old has shown me how to copy music CD's onto my Palm Tungsten, so I
have a poor man's iPod, and the plane is wired for stereo Aux In. I'm all set.
My titles include "Highway Star" by Deep Purple, and "Move It On Over," "Mustang
Sally" and other road trip hits for gettin' on down the airways :-) I need
to get "Danger Zone" (Top Gun) for the barrel roll sequence...

Pretty reasonable prices with one large caveat - I bought an Aztec engine
for my Skybolt some time ago and the prop governor wasn't usable as it's
designed to feather at 0 oil pressure instead of go flat pitch. You
probably don't want the Aztec prop either for similar reasons. On a twin
feathering a dead engine is good, on a single losing oil pressure to the
prop and feather is bad as you just lost your thrust even if the engine is
still operating. Might be a good deal if you can sell of the
engine/governor or just buy the engine.

Have you tried using one of the 6" flex drives in your electric screwdriver

Radomir,
Another technique for preparing nutplates that I have used is a Allen head
cap screw of the proper size. The cap screws are made from a hardened
material and will open up the threads a bit without cutting into the
nutplates. Also, the recessed hex head makes it easier to use vs. a Phillips
or sloted. If I have many nutplates to do, I have chucked the round external
head of the screw into my electric drill and run it slowly into the
nutplate. It also helps to put some Moly containing lube on the capscrew.

I've carefully used the tap on only a couple nutplates. It seemed to take
ALL the bite out of it instead of just breaking them in. Maybe I did it too
much. Anyway, I prefer to use some dry BoeLube on the screw threads
instead. Same effect without loosening the grip of the nutplate.
As Dale suggested, socket head cap screws are a nice upgrade where they
won't be in the way. The edges of my cockpit floors, footwells and baggage
floors are installed with these, and it make screwing/unscrewing in crowded
or awkward areas much easier.

Good links from the SoCal list:

And

Ouch! I cringe seeing that landing gear take that! Funny how none of these
are tailwheel aircraft.....

Yes, for flush screws, like on the spinner, the cowl right behind the
spinner and inspection covers, I'm using SS torx screws. For none flush
areas, SS socket head cap screws are even more durable.
The downside is you have to keep the different sized tools handy for all
these non-typical fasteners! I have nice ratchet nutdriver that takes
different torx/hex/philips/straight bits.

Way easier is to buy a bottle of liquid Boelube from Avery or Spruce. (4.95
I think - be sure to get liquid and not stick) One drop on the thread and
you can easily turn it in by hand. Much less drastic and easier than
tapping if I understand the question. It's like magic. Also works great as
a drill lube.

Radomir,
Another technique for preparing nutplates that I have used is a Allen head
cap screw of the proper size.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I have liquid Boelube, and it's awesome.. I'll
just use that and probably one of those "alternative" screws..
shouldn't be a problem.
