At higher speeds, it's bank angle limiteds to about 15-20 degrees, so as not to
overwhelm the pitch authority of the altitude hold servo, but you're asking a
man who currently has just a one-axis A/P :-) Check back with me at the end
of the year and I can tell you. Right now, I supply the pitch inputs by hand
or by trim, and they're nothing extraordinary.
Looks like Katrina will be dissipated by our trip time. I feel sorry for those
who stayed behind in New Orleans and Biloxi.

How does it behave in pitch during a 180` turn? Does it ask for some trim
up (assuming is has a trim indicator)? Or does it hold altitude through the
turn with no adjustments? My TruTrak insists on a good dose of trim up if
it's in a prolonged turn .....

I am using the TruTrak Alt Hold and yes it does require trim up ... I have
only tried the 180 a couple of times and each time it wanted to go "down" ...

Len: When you say your TruTrak requires "a good dose of trim up if it's in
a prolonged turn", is that true with and without altitude hold engaged?
I'm trying to decide between the TruTrak and the Trio; both seem to be
excellent systems for about the same amount of money. Can anyone give me a
"real world" anaysis of the principle advantages of each over the other?
The Trio seems to have more features but the new TruTrak with the ADI/AP
Controller with pitch, roll, and heading display seems pretty hard to pass
up. What about the utility and convenience of altitude hold? A lot of
people seem to get along without it just fine, others seem to swear by
it----I'm inclined in favor of including it in my new bird, but $1,700 is a
lot for mere convenience, if that is all it adds.

Wondering if anyone knows when and where any of the fall fly-ins are to take
place....
I have info on September fly-ins...
the Winston Airshow on the 10th and 11th
Asheboro aerofest at Smith airpark on the 17th and 18th
Farmville N.C on the 24th and 25th
October fly-ins.....
Virginia State EAA fly-in at Dinwiddle the 1st and 2nd
Rotors Over Carolina in Aiken S.C. the 7th through 9th
Darlington S.C. State EAA fly-in the 8th and 9th
Bishopville S.C. fly-in 22nd and 23rd
Franklin N.C. Airshow/fly-in 22nd and 23rd
Camden S.C. airshow 29th and 30th
November fly-ins......
Licolnton N.C. on november the 5th.
So what else am I missing??? Where is the good smaller fly-ins? When is
Laneys fly-in, or Stateline Ultraports breakfast fly-in, or Trenton flyers
fall fly-in, anything going on near James Peelers place?
I don't have anything for the weekends of September 3rd and 4th, October
15th and 16th or all of November except for the lincolnton fly-in.
Gotta make plans now and REALLY hate hearing about some great fly-in I
missed out on cause I wasn't in the know.... Thanks in advance for any
replys.

Ron:
You can use airshow parking or ask for parking down on the lower ramp if you
prefer to park away from the people. SERV has been offered free entrance
and meals if you put the plane on static display.

Lee, it will depend on how much hands-off convenience you are after. If you can
tolerate the long and poorly-damped pitch phugoids of an RV in even mildly disturbed
air, the alt hold will not give you much return for the dollar. I think,
however, that if you want "help" flying single pilot IFR, or want to be able
to study a chart or scan the ground for a waypoint without worry of busting
an assigned altitude, the alt hold will be your friend. These responsive airplanes
are not good at maintaining heading or altitude without constant small
inputs from the pilot, be that pilot you or "George."

Lee, it will depend on how much hands-off convenience you are after. If you
can tolerate the long and poorly-damped pitch phugoids of an RV in even
mildly disturbed air, the alt hold will not give you much return for the dollar.
I think, however, that if you want "help" flying single pilot IFR, or want
to be able to study a chart or scan the ground for a waypoint without worry
of busting an assigned altitude, the alt hold will be your friend. These
responsive airplanes are not good at maintaining heading or altitude without
constant small inputs from the pilot, be that pilot you or "George."
I will be honest with you guys .... if there is one instrument in my plane
that you cannot take back ... it is ALT HOLD ... it is the most valuable part
of my auto pilot system. Many times I just use it and hand fly the direction
.... ALT HOLD in the RV is fabulous !!!

Scott,
Good to see your name again! This will be my last
weekend of driving to Duke for school. after that,
it's full-time RV-8 building. I'm extremely excited
about it too! The original plan was to hold off until
school was actually finished, but I'm probably about
half way finished with the horizontal stabilizer
already. It's hard to have $3k in tools and $2k in
aircraft aluminum sitting in the garage and NOT touch
it.
As for actually flying, I haven't been since you
graciously hosted me in your RV-8. My BFR is overdue,
but finishing school has been my priority. Once
that's over, I'll have more time for flying, and
building.
Looks like you may be building one yourself soon eh?

Who is good to go to, to get a fixed pitch metal prop balanced? My RV has
had a vibration since I got it earlier this year, and apparently it was
there from the 1st flight in the plane since there is mention of it in the
logbooks. It is a older engine, but was a new prop.....
I want to try to get it smoother, and someone suggested prop balancing. I
was refered to Wendel at Cheraw, but haven't been able to get ahold of him.
Any other local options?
thanks
Ron Awad

Yep, I'm seriously looking into building an RV-8. Going to
get inverted systems, a little more hp, and different panel
this time, but love the RV8 in general. Good to see you
getting started, maybe will catch up @ Winston airshow...

I flew mine to Sensenich Propeller in Lancaster, PA and had it done (along with
a repitch) That's a long haul for you, and the $250 price can probably be beat.
They did an excellent job, though. Made a new animal out of my RV :-)

Any other local options?
thanks

Thanks for the reply. Yeah that is a bit of a long haul and I wouldn't want
to try to do it till we get rid of the haze and all the thunderstorms. Would
like to get it done closer to home and asap.

Undecided at this point... I suppose there is a check-in time before which we are
not expected at the Inn, maybe 4 o'clock? It may depend on what I can find
to do on the way down, like finding cheap avgas somewhere (no fuel on Ocracoke)
and perhaps visiting a friend or a museum or some such. And of course the
weather!
I'm free all day Friday and we could leave in the morning, but I'm guessing there
will be domestic reasons for leaving later in the day (read: chores).
Best guess is: arriving in time to check in before dinner at Howard's, but if there's
little possibility of TSTMs to avoid, maybe dinner first? I don't know
any closer than that. Between 4 and 6.

Stormy,
I hope you all have a great time on the beach.
Maybe one time we will join you, but not this time.
Thanks for the autopilot update, it makes we want to place my order for the TruTrak
ADI unit!
I just replaced our standard battery with a newer Odyssey battery and saved 10
lbs...wow
Getting ready to install a engine power monitor I got used and updated, it is supposed
to give me constant %of power. I'm looking forward to using it.
Hoping "island time" is good to you all.
