    Subject: Ridgeland Fly-In/Air Race
    From: lee.logan@gulfstream.com
12:02:00 PM --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: lee.logan@gulfstream.com Guys: I sent this message originally to James, Len, and Ken to get some feedback. Len suggested putting it out to the whole SERV membership. We are mulling an idea over here in Ridgeland (3J1) about a fly-in sometime in the spring of next year that potentially will include an air race as part of the attraction of participating. Also, we are thinking about holding a "prototype" race sometime late this fall to check out our "performance index" program as well as the other parts of our "race plan". I was wondering if I could ask you guys to review some of our ideas as a sanity check and also from the perspective of whether or not you think our ideas would be appealing to SERV and to the RV and experimental communities, or for that matter, to general aviation in general. The basic idea will be to set up 3 relatively short courses 150-200 nm coming to Ridgeland (3J1) from the north, west, and south. Any and all GA aircraft could participate and the winner(s) would be those with the best "adjusted" time enroute. The idea would be to open the course at say, 0900 Saturday am and close the course to entries at 1000 or 1030. Aircraft who make the closing time should all get to Ridgeland before noon. We are looking for a way to attact participants over and above the usual "hamburger/hotdog/BBQ" routine. We hope that having three courses will make it convenient for people to participate: If you are based north of 3J1, for example, you could hopefully "race" the northern course to get to the fly-in without having to go very much out of your way. The same would be true from the west and south. Our idea is to conduct more of a "flying fly-in" and less of a "static display fly-in". If we can get the indexes for aircraft performance, course length, and weather/wind effects right, we should be able to declare winners with confidence. A Piper Cub could theoretically compete on an equal basis with an RV or a Turbo Lancair IV and vice versa. We plan on having 3 or 4 legs for each "race course" with lengths such that a plane like an RV could complete it in an hour or so. We haven't decided yet on how you prove overflight of each turn point, but have a couple of good ideas. I've been in contact with the CAFE Foundation and the British Schnieder Cup people trying to get a handle on the indexing necessary. If any of you have a resource for that kind of information, please let me know. I already have a "prototype" index program going together, but it will have to be refined many times, I suspect, before we are satisfied with it. Do you guys think this is something the GA community would embrace? Would you guys at CUB and nearby participate in our "prototype" race? We will have a little sponsorship money to help put it on, but not a lot---this will really be a volunteer effort and don't want this to be a serious burden on anybody: Not on us putting it on, nor on anyone who elects to participate. Fun and challenging but neither risky nor burdensome is the idea. No one should have to stay over night---participation in the entire event should not take more than a few hours. Everyone will be encouraged to fly their airplane at least once during the day after they get to 3J1 too (we may have a spot landing contest to make that interesting). We'll have hotdogs and hamburgers, of course, and have all our local airplanes on display (including several Wacos, Stearmans, a Tiger Moth, CJ-6, Cassut racer, gliders and ultralights, powered parachute, etc). Other possibilities abound (swap meet, biennial check rides (we have an instructor who says he'll do them for free), etc). Could be interesting and a lot of fun. What do y'all think? Lee... I've got my bicycles reserved and my packing list together. Wx is looking real good last I checked. --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: sportav8r@aol.com Just checked AirNav for fuel prices; looks like I'll be topping off at Elizabeth City for some $3.24 100LL. Those taking a more southerly route might want to verify and consider taking advantage of prices at KACZ, Wallace, NC, about 100 mi W of Ocracoke. They showed 100LL @ $2.63/Gal. on August 21st. I'd call to be sure, since it's not guaranteed, and it's 10 days old. Too far out of my way, unfortunately. -Stormy

More flying is definitely what we need. And an air race would be very cool! If you haven't already, check out the "Cow country to Carolinas" air race Sept 21-29 at www.us-airrace.org<http://www.us-airrace.org> . Driving a rental down from Manteo would really be a disatant second choice for me! Larry, how do you plan to get around down there for 4 days without a bike - rent a scooter instead? Most of it is walkable, but Howards is a good hike from Silver Bay. -Stormy -----Original Message----- From: Steve Glasgow <willfly@carolina.rr.com> Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: Ocracoke --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Steve Glasgow" <willfly@carolina.rr.com> Good reason to get there early rather than later.
