My name is Carter Wright (cartaire on the VAF forums), and I have recently relocated to Winston-Salem from Manhattan. I'm here with my wife, two girls (Isabel 2 and Olivia 4), and Henry - our outrageous canine. I have been pouring over RV related websites (including SERV) for years - but just couldn't figure a way to build in our tiny NYC apartment. Well, all that's changed now, and as soon as I finish this "training" kit, I'll order an RV-8 empennage. My workshop is coming along nicely. I have corresponded with a few of you over the last months, and am looking forward to meeting everyone in person. I even made my way to an EAA meeting at RUQ last month. I would like to stop by Len's hangar at the airshow on Saturday to say hi. When I figure out how, I'll post a bazillion RV photos on the SERV photo gallery - mostly from visits to Spruce Creek fly-in in Daytona Beach and Sun-n-Fun. Some cool photos taken from the back seat of a Rocket flying in formation with 3 RV-8s. Looking forward to meeting you all, and to starting the empennage, and to the WS airshow. I do prefer side by side, it is nice to have some one to talk with and also it can be of help if needed.. The seven, is a beautiful thing... I have to respond to Bert's opinion as mine differs significantly. I have about 10K hours in side-by-side type aircraft and about 2.5K in tandem. I've instructed in both. Addressing Bert's points, with one exception, the tandem aircraft are roomier than side-by-side - including RVs. The one exception is the RV-4. "Bold" heads don't bother me - because I'm not looking at the head of the front seater, I'm enjoying the view out the canopy. I've found, using an intercom, that I can talk to the other person without problem. I recommend side-by-side seating if your spouse will be more comfortable sitting next to you. Otherwise, I prefer tandem. If you'd like a 10 minute dissertation on why, contact me offline. I enjoyed chatting with Larry, Jim, and Len while Leslie got to know Thane. I hope you all took notes from my 4 year-old, and understand that the proper way to eat a sugar cookie is to smother it with shredded cheese. Len, great chili, beautiful plane. Look to the SERV photo album - I'll post a few photos from the flightline. Many Thanks, Carter, Leslie, Olivia, Isabel. The kit is referred to as #199-93. Aircraft Spruce offers this upgrade (for two wheels) for around $300. This upgrade essentially replaces your rotor disk with a thicker rotor disk. This reportedly gives almost a 30% greater stopping power due to better heat dissipation and less warping. I researched the Cleveland catalogs and discovered that there are cheaper alternates. I am upgrading my wheels but at a lesser cost. http://www.parker.com/ag/wbd/Cleveland/pdf/wb02b.pdf Wheel Assembly page 9 #199-93 click on wheel assembly 40-230 for details on heavy duty disc for the upgrade from the 40-230 assembly to the heavy duty 40-78B assembly. part no. 164-01700 Brake Disc is the heavier (thicker) disk used in the 199-93 upgrade. The 199-93 kit offered by aircraft spruce will cost you around $300 for basically 2 rotor discs, some shims, the brake linings and some labels to put on your wheels. I found a RAPCO replacement part for the Cleveland 164-01700 at $70 each for a total of $140 for 2. They also offer 8 brake line pads/rivets enough for two complete brake pad changes for $40.00 which would bring the total to $180 vs the $300. If interested, e mail me for the source I found.
