--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" <Larry@BowenAero.com> Many of us know that Dennis and Lori Millsap had to back out of the recent Ocracoke trip. Here's why. Good job Dennis. - Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com Copied from http://vansairforce.net/ ================================================= 9/8 Hurricane Katrina Relief via RV ...sent in by Millsap, Dennis [MILLSAPD at mail.ecu.edu] I've got another Katrina story for you. I flew into the TFR as part of the relief effort. RVs are great machines and they can help in so many situations. Last week, I did something I never thought I would have to do; I used the RV to help fly in relief supplies to the hurricane victims. I talked to my Dad who lives in Waynesboro MS. I was actually on the phone with him during the height of the storm when he watched the roof of his barn blow off. I asked him to call me back when the storm was over so we would know they were O.K. He never called back. My sister lives in Slidell LA and she is the Deputy Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) in Slidell. I don't know how, but immediately after the storm she was able to send a fax to me with the names and phone numbers of all of her employees and asked me to call them all and let them know their loved ones were O.K. She also sent a list of materials they needed, MREs, water, diesel, etc. I called Washington D.C and coordinated the relief efforts for her facility and then set about to gathering things for storm relief, tarps, fuel, water, generators, chain saws, etc. My wife drove the truck (she got the tough duty) and I headed out in the RV to see if we could help and to make sure all of our loved ones were still alive. I flew from Greenville NC to Union County SC where the gas is still $2.95 a gallon. Better get it quick, cause it won't last long. From there I flew to Wetumpka AL (just north of Montgomery) to fuel up again. I figured this would be the last place I would be able to get gas (I was right). From there I flew to Waynesboro. The FAA briefer was honest when he said he didn't have any way of knowing what kind of shape the runway was in. So, I flew over and did a low pass on the runway. Sure enough there was debris out there. As I pulled up from the pass I noticed the debris started to blow off. Turns out it was insulation from the FBO that had lost the roof. I turned around and landed and got a ride to my parent's house. Trees were down everywhere. The roof on the barn was the only casualty other than the trees. Mom and dad were both fine and the new metal roof they had just put on their house didn't even have a scratch on it! Once I figured out that mom and dad were O.K. I decided to see if I could fly to Slidell LA to check on my sister and nephew. I was able to get a phone out to call the DISA folks in Washington. They had sent all of the relief supplies, but they told me there were two infants in the facility that needed diapers, formula, baby wipes, etc. So, I went to the store (being run on generator power) and stocked up. I called the FAA Recovery Center and told them what I was doing; they gave me a squawk code and told me to remain VFR. They gave me the frequency to the lone aircraft that was controlling the whole area. I've talked a lot on the radio a lot and I know how to wait for the pause to make a radio call, but this time it took TWELVE MINUTES to announce myself to Omaha 45 and give them my transponder code. I was cleared into the TFR and told to remain VFR. There was no radar coverage, truly see and avoid only. The devastation in Slidell was unbelievable. Nobody in that part of the world will be hurting for firewood any time soon. TREES DOWN EVERYWHERE! My sister had not been home since the storm hit and this was on Friday. So, we borrowed a truck (one that had not been flooded) and headed to her house. She literally had problems finding her way home because the landmarks were all gone. About 50% of the roads were passable so we ended up back-tracking a lot. When we finally got there I noticed her neighbor had a boat trailer in his yard, but the 22 ft. boat was down the road about 200 yards. It was obvious the flood waters had been there. It looked like about 2-3 ft of water had been in the house. Carpets, wood floors and the new Honda Accord in the garage were all pretty well ruined. Her back yard looked like a war zone. She had about 30 trees, only one small oak survived. Needless to say she was devastated. They said the schools may not open for months. So, I loaded Joshua (my nephew) up flew him back to NC with us. Lori (my wife) and I home school our kids, so we just added one more to the mix. Mom and dad called last night, they now have water, power and phone. So, they are very blessed. It will be months before a lot of folks reach a "normal" life again. We got a call this morning from the grandparents of one of the infants in Slidell, LA. They live in Iowa and they were so thankful that we made an extra effort to help out where we could. I often think of my RV as a true Recreational Vehicle, but it can be so much more. It can be a way to help other folks in need. If you have the chance to give to the Katrina relief effort, please do. There are people that have lost everything and they need our help. God bless, Dennis W. Millsap RV-6A, N464DM

Subject: [PLEASE READ] Matronics Upgrade Today 9/11/05 Sunday!
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com> Dear Listers, I will be implementing some major upgrades to the Matronics infrastructure today, Sunday 09/11/2005. During the upgrade, web services such as the Archive Search Engine, List Browser, and the Subscription Page will not be available. Additionally, incoming and outgoing List Email will not be processed during this time, although no actual email should be lost only queued for later delivery. This is a rather substantial upgrade and includes moving all network, computer, and UPS equipment to a new systems rack. I hope to have everything back on line by 8PM PDT tonight or sooner if all goes well. This is an awesome upgrade that I've been wanting to do for a long time, and should help increase availability of the Matronics systems to near 99.99%! Thank you for your patience!
