Ken and I didn't REALLY make it to KCUB ... we made it to the "initial" and had to break it off (weather) and land at a nearby airpark where we have friends who are hangaring the planes and who drove us to the airport. I launched from INT around 8:00am for Decatur, Alabama (DCU) to meet up with James Clark and Ken Harrill who were launching from Columbia Downtown around the same time. Bill Crothers was already at DCU having arrived there on Thursday to spend the night. The first leg to DCU was the longest of the day ... 341nm for me ... at a comfortable cruise ... a little over 2 hours. Landed at DCU to Bill's smiling face ... with the rest of Palmetto Flight only 15 - 20 minutes out. We all refueled ... 2.99 guaranteed price !! We launched from DCU headed to Warren, Arkansas (3M9) as a flight of 4. A flight of about 1 1/2 hours. The mayor of Warren would meet us at the field to open the gas tanks and give us a ride to lunch. With that kind of reception we had to make a nice approach !! He picked us up and took us into town for lunch at the local hot spot. The owner of a Baron and the local bank also played taxicab for us. Nice stop and again 2.99 fuel !! Last stop ... Gainesville, Texas (GLE) just about 40 miles north of Dallas. I must tell you it was a thrill to see DFW on my GPS !!! This flight was also about 1 1/2 hours ... we made a nice arrival pass for the gathered crowd ... smoke on and in diamond formation. After all day of flying we were immediately herded into a 3 hour formation class. Then out for dinner and beer with all the attendees ... 16 planes in all. Guys from Park City, Utah .. Nashville, Tn ... Cincinnati, Oh ... Stu McCurdy ... FFI, Inc founder and formation Guru ... ex Air Force jock .. was the instructor for the clinic. Famous words are "Be at your planes gentlemen at 0800" ... we won't wait for you. Four flights with different leads and planes all day Saturday ... real workout .. but I learned a lot ... especially the rejoins (which are hard !!). Most fun I had that day was in a four ship in loose trail ... we were screaming up and down in semi hammer heads ... just one right after the other as if in a dog fight ... FUN !!! Dinner that night and lots more beer. A beautiful movie on an RV trip out west taken by Stu and some of the guys from Team RV ... I have requested a copy of the CD from Mike Stewart ... we have to show this to you ... you will want to make the trip !!! Up early to questionable weather in the East on Sunday morning ... we launched with the exact same flight plan as before ... just reversing the stops. Got to Decatur before we had to make a decision whether to try to make it home. We launched for Anderson, SC at 2500' and would go as far as we could. James was quick to point out all the towers on the hills at 12:00 o'clock ... luckily we missed them all. Visibility was great though and we made Anderson with no trouble. We all decided to split up at that point and head on home. Everyone made it with James and Ken having the worst weather to avoid but James had borrowed a friends Garmin 396 and now has one on order for himself. Maybe we can get James to do a product review for us since he got some real time weather use out of it. Great trip ... who would believe you can make a trip to Dallas, Texas for the weekend ... only in an RV !!! Total flying time for me was 16 hours which included all the formation flights. Man I love these planes. That smoke really does the job. I ended up in a three-ship formation doing a pass and I was the only one WITHOUT smoke. Hmmmmmm.... Visibility was great though and we made > Anderson An interesting thing about flying in formation (flight of four) ... You have AT LEAST one set of eyes looking straight ahead, one set looking to the left and one set looking to the right. We even had a spare set looking around. Stuff gets spotted a LOT quicker. with no trouble. We all decided to split up at that point and head on home. > Everyone made it with James and Ken having the worst weather to avoid but > James had borrowed a friends Garmin 396 and now has one on order for > himself. What do you mean on order??? I now have that toy in my grubby little paws!!! (Thanks for the help Patty) Maybe we can get James to do a product review for us since he got some real > time weather use out of it. Summary: You gonna want one of these! I have used XM Weather before on another product. It too is great. The main thing about having weather info in the cockpit, you can tell where the REALLY bad stuff is. You can tell if all is OK with you where you are then you can **probably** procede. This stuff does not necessarily tell you where TO go (the suppliers specifically warn AGAINST that), it can tell you where NOT to go. As we were travelling along the foothills, I could tell there was BAD STUFF over Atlanta. No we were not planning to go there but it was clear to me we could NOT. When Ken and I were headed to Columbia, we first set KGRD (Greenwood) as the target alternative with a decision to be made as we got there, then 27J (Newberry). I could tell that we were NOT going to make it approaching from the south. We would have to appraoch from the north or south as KCAE was reporting IFR and direct meant directly through their airspace. Where we were was VFR (though not a whole lot) and the airports to the north side we VFR. That meant if we went north and the weather got worse (which was expected, we had plenty places were we could land and get a car. If you have a Garmin product already (handheld) you already know how to use it. Weather is just another feature with more pages and overlays (an oh, one more antenna .. a puck). Now for the biggest surprise for me ... I REALLY liked having the XM Radio there. Nancy wanted to hear a little Gospel (after all it WAS Sunday) and then a little Classical (she used to play some stringed instrument) and finally a bit of Reggae (actually a LOT). Can you say "we be jammin' in the air mon". For a while the plane was a-rocking. Color Map shows you where you are headed Weather shows you where not to go and if you can get there Tunes make it all nice. A more detailed commentary later. By the way, the unit I have will have the full package and thus winds aloft. So on a long trip like this if you can find a 15 knot difference (or let's say 10 knots each way) you have paid for the extra $20/month charge for the Aviator Package vs the Aviator Lite (no winds aloft). <> Good time had by all. Closing note: We've gotta get in some practice! James Great trip ... who would believe you can make a trip to Dallas, Texas for > the weekend ... only in an RV !!! In between those two will be ICOM 200 (just got it the other day) and GTX-327... and some GPS (maybe a 296? w/ AirGizmo mount)... Love those big screens :) PS. I'd probably prefer GRT Sport as primary display, but two Dynons cross-feeding each other with split screens gives them a slight advantage.
