It was nice talking to you as you were crossing the mountains and figuring we were only 10 minutes behind you. We launched from DCU headed to Warren, Arkansas (3M9) as a flight of 4. A > flight of about 1 1/2 hours. The mayor of Warren would meet us at the > field > to open the gas tanks and give us a ride to lunch. With that kind of > reception we had to make a nice approach !! The owner of a Baron and the local bank > also > played taxicab for us. Nice stop and again 2.99 fuel !! You forgot the best part ... " ... we don't take credit cards, just put your name and amount down here and we will send you a bill...". By the way they say they have NEVER been stiffed. Way cool. Last stop ... Gainesville, Texas (GLE) just about 40 miles north of Dallas. > I must tell you it was a thrill to see DFW on my GPS !!! This flight was > also about 1 1/2 hours ... we made a nice arrival pass for the gathered > crowd > ... smoke on and in diamond formation. Len you now make us look **really** good on arrivals. That smoke really does the job. I ended up in a three-ship formation doing a pass and I was the only one WITHOUT smoke. Hmmmmmm.... Visibility was great though and we made > Anderson An interesting thing about flying in formation (flight of four) ... You have AT LEAST one set of eyes looking straight ahead, one set looking to the left and one set looking to the right. We even had a spare set looking around. Stuff gets spotted a LOT quicker. with no trouble. We all decided to split up at that point and head on home. > Everyone made it with James and Ken having the worst weather to avoid but > James had borrowed a friends Garmin 396 and now has one on order for > himself. What do you mean on order??? I now have that toy in my grubby little paws!!! (Thanks for the help Patty) Maybe we can get James to do a product review for us since he got some real > time weather use out of it. Summary: You gonna want one of these! I have used XM Weather before on another product. It too is great. The main thing about having weather info in the cockpit, you can tell where the REALLY bad stuff is. You can tell if all is OK with you where you are then you can **probably** procede. This stuff does not necessarily tell you where TO go (the suppliers specifically warn AGAINST that), it can tell you where NOT to go. As we were travelling along the foothills, I could tell there was BAD STUFF over Atlanta. No we were not planning to go there but it was clear to me we could NOT. When Ken and I were headed to Columbia, we first set KGRD (Greenwood) as the target alternative with a decision to be made as we got there, then 27J (Newberry). I could tell that we were NOT going to make it approaching from the south. We would have to appraoch from the north or south as KCAE was reporting IFR and direct meant directly through their airspace. Where we were was VFR (though not a whole lot) and the airports to the north side we VFR. That meant if we went north and the weather got worse (which was expected, we had plenty places were we could land and get a car. If you have a Garmin product already (handheld) you already know how to use it. Weather is just another feature with more pages and overlays (an oh, one more antenna .. a puck). Now for the biggest surprise for me ... I REALLY liked having the XM Radio there. Nancy wanted to hear a little Gospel (after all it WAS Sunday) and then a little Classical (she used to play some stringed instrument) and finally a bit of Reggae (actually a LOT). Can you say "we be jammin' in the air mon". For a while the plane was a-rocking. Color Map shows you where you are headed Weather shows you where not to go and if you can get there Tunes make it all nice. A more detailed commentary later. By the way, the unit I have will have the full package and thus winds aloft. So on a long trip like this if you can find a 15 knot difference (or let's say 10 knots each way) you have paid for the extra $20/month charge for the Aviator Package vs the Aviator Lite (no winds aloft). <<It shows what the winds are wherer you are and you can select the standard altitudes to look at.>> Good time had by all. Closing note: We've gotta get in some practice! James Great trip ... who would believe you can make a trip to Dallas, Texas for > the weekend ... only in an RV !!! Total flying time for me was 16 hours > which > included all the formation flights. > > Man I love these planes. > > Len Leggette, RV-8A > Greensboro, NC N910LL > 408 hrs > > > , > > -- This is an alternate email. What I've done in the past for prospective builders is to give them an hour or four of talking and tool demo's. Everything from drilling to dimpling to countersinking, etc. If you order the tool box kit from Van's we can put that thing together while you are here. I thought I share a few more of the nice thoughts people have had regarding the what the Lists mean to them. Please take a minute right now and make a Contribution to support these Lists. Remember that its solely *your* generosity that keeps them running and without your support they would cease to exist. --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" <Larry@BowenAero.com> Sounds real nice!! I'm still happy with my D10A. If I had to do it again I'd stay with the Dynon products. Best all-around value, IMO. Have fun running wires!! I was very intimidated by all those electrons & schematics in the beginning, but Wayne 8A and Len showed me the way. In the end, I enjoyed it and still like making little 'maintenance' changes to my plane's wiring. Improved cabin/panel night-lighting is in progress now!! Ron Awad I think we all decided during fill ups that we were averaging in the 9 gph range ... even Bill in the 150 hp -4 ... but he was running 2550 rpm ... 12 times 9 per hour = 108 times $2.99 per gallon at all stops = $324 ... getting cheaper !!! Really was a blast !! Len

--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: James Clark <jclarkmail@gmail.com> Thanks for thinking of us and asking but sadly enough, no. Don't know what happened in Ken's case but I did not get a recommendation to take the ride. My first flight in the morning was a 4-ship to demo to the "newbies" what it is like. It was led by Kahuna and had me (at #4) and Ken in it. Long story short, I was not ready to be "seen" ... not on my game. No other excuses. I knew it had killed the chance for an eval right then and there. Can do much better. Have done much better. Will do much better. My next two flights were with newbies as a flight lead (the first one with Falcon as a safety pilot with one of the "newbies") and the next was one on one with a newbie from the prior flight. I really enjoyed seeing the progress being made. It was nice being able to give back and help those who are joining our "fraternity". I am hoping that the next clinic will provide just a little more opportunity for what I call the "oldbies" :-) to get their cobwebs knocked loose as well. Don't fret though, Palmetto Flight is going deeper into practice, practice, practice. We'll get there.
