I use it all the time. Works great! Just hit reset, then start leaning. It
will identify which peaks first then tell you degrees from peak. I usually
run 75 degrees rich of peak.

Just to start another controversy, anybody playing with Lean of Peak? Seems
like a trend that is rapidly gaining popularity. I've read several articles
from the Cessna Pilots Organization that seems to really support it and the
engines most of us will use (Lycoming IO-540) seems to lend itself very well
to the idea due to fairly consistent fuel/air mixture between cylinders.

Got the engine, but far from mounting it yet

Yes, trying to get smarter on the topic.

I wonder where you end up (ROP or LOP) if you lean until rough, richen until
smooth without looking at the fancy engine monitors. When I lean using the
EIS, it peaks before there is any roughness. So, I guess "lean to rough,
rich until smooth" puts you at peak or LOP.

      Dear Listers,

There are just four more days left of this year's List Fund Raiser! Response has
been very good, but we are behind last year as far as the number of people
that have made a Contribution and as a percentage of the total number of subscribers.

Please remember that there isn't any sort of commercial advertising on the Lists
and the *only* means I have of keeping these Lists running through your Contributions
      during this Fund Raiser.

      Please make a Contribution today!

OK you guys have me bugged- on my E3D (150 hp carbed) I'll normally see about
1520 or so before roughness in cruise, and on the way back from GLE it got
all the way to just over 1600 without roughness (around 9.5K' and 2350 rpms).

Something wrong with my engine or technique?

ps- GLE to SYI (560 nm) in about 3:45 and 6.4 gph averaging above alt & rpm-

Lakeland RV Fly-in last year. Jerry has an award-winning RV-8. We flew back

showing. Here's the information on the fly-in:

I'm no expert, but I don't think anything is wrong with your technique.
Absolute temps are hard to compare across engines. Everyone's temp probes
are placed differently, etc. There is no harm leaning very aggressively
while at reduced power (9,500 ft).

During the summer, CHT's determined how hard I could lean. I had to run a
little richer than I wanted to keep them cool. Now that it's cold again I
can be more aggressive with the red lever. 6.4 gph is awesome. I usually
see about 9.5 gph at 23 squared...but I seldom go higher than 5,500.

      FWIW,

Hi Larry and all. I have been playing with the leaning function, but it is
not too helpful with my carbureted engine. The RF cylinder runs cold and the
RR cylinder runs hot. At cruise or higher setting the RR is about 1400 and the

RF is about 1250. As I lean, the other three rise normally, the RR rises
some, peaks and drops some. There is no way that I can get a 50 deg Rich of Peak

with the RR. So, I let it do what it wants and watch the other three. Some
of the engine experts here say that the spread is not an issue, that I now
have too much information (from the EIS) for my own good. Not sure that I buy

that thought totally, but I am getting the 160 HP speeds that Van predicted.
      189 mph TAS. Regards, John.

Peak for me is typically 1538*F at 24 squared meaasured at #3 cylinder. I can
lean her beyond to about 1480 before it starts to get rough, but have to bring
in extra power to counter the dropping rpm and maintain altitude. Leaned that
far, you will soon know if you descend w/o enrichening things :-) Runs great,
less filling to do later at the pump.

      Marcus
Got the engine, but far from mounting it yet

I use it all the time. Works great! Just hit reset, then start leaning. It
will identify which peaks first then tell you degrees from peak. I usually
run 75 degrees rich of peak.

I know a couple of you guys have the EIS engine monitor in your planes. Do
you rely on the "digital leaning pages"? I've had those pages disabled so
      far. Thinking of trying them....

I have an aero sport engine with the gami injectors. All cylinders peak with
in .2/10's of a gallon and runs smooth lean of peak. That's gami's claim to
fame. But you do loose some airspeed On a hot day cylinder head temp's run

Well, Thanksgiving weekend is in the archives now, and the work week resumes for
me with a vengeance tomorrow. I took my daughter back to college in the RV
this afternoon, and wouldn't you know the wx was immediately worse than forecast.
Shoot, it was worse that the current observations I had checked 10 minutes
before. Ignoring the voice of reason that told me to turn back immediately
and pack the car instead, I pressed on eastward into lowering overcast and patches
of 1-2 miles vis in showers, fully expecting to make Newport News withjout
incident, and by then fully expecting to have quite a time of it getting as
far back home as I could. That's about how it went, too. KPHF wx was as nice
as I was told to expect, but back in the vicinity of RIC, the gauntlet remained
to be run. I made it as far as western edge of the Ric Class C before the
looks of things westward got too spooky. Set course for CHO, but the Approach
freq was full of traffic wanting vectors around leve
l 3 precip. No thanks! Hasty 180 to my last landmark with decent viz, namely
Louisa, where I landed in a driving rain and 5 miles reported visibility (yeah,
right) below a 1600 foot ceiling. Brought back memories of some foolishness
I was part of coming home from OSH last year, off the edge of Chicago's class
      B ;-)

Miriam and I got home in the car tonight about the same time we would have had
we driven Melanie to Christopher Newport in the car. Plus, my baby is out in
the rain (too cheap to pop for hangar rent for who knows how long) and I get to
retrieve her later when the weather breaks. Oh well, at least I got to fly
today. A chance to scare yourself in an airplane- priceless. I did this same
stuck-away-from-home trick 14 years ago, with a rented Cessna 152, when the ink
on my ticket was still wet. One stranding every 14 years-maybe not a bad average
      overall for VFR-boy.

Bob & Larry: no grafitti on my airplane while I'm away!

Lesson learned: when wx is twice as bad as forecast right out of the gate, you
should hear an inner voice saying "turn back." 2: when you hear said voice,
listen quickly, before you get far enough into your trip to talk yourself into
pushing on. 3: Got time to spare? Go by air! 4: Santa, I want an IFR plane and
a rating to go with it, please. 5: Nevertheless, IFR is no help getting home
to a private strip that is itself below minimums.

That's why they call me "Stormy..."

      Stormy,

I spent 6 hours today going through that same weather too. Luckily, we had
all the gizmos possible on board (oh joys of flying a Cirrus SR-22), so
majority of our trip was spent deviating around those same cells. We also
lucked out with altitude (7k going up to Lancaster, PA, and 8k on the way
back) that we were in between layers most of the time. However, if we
didn't have XM weather on board, it would have been one very rough ride.

Glad to hear everything worked out OK.

      Radomir

Some more questions and some review for me if you don't mind ...

      1. What engine? O-360or O-320?

Probably not a factor at all but tells me what to "feel".

      2. What prop? Wood? Metal? FP or CS?

Makes a big difference if all else is constant. Wood much smoother.

      3. What RPM or scenarion for vibration?

The question of harmonics come to mind. With a "Prop Tach" you can tell the
exact RPM. A harmonic should felt at multiples of the RPM.

      4. Carburetor or fuel injected?

Is the "carbbie" appropriately adjusted. I suspect so.

      5. What mounts? Conical or Dynafocal?

With conicals you can almost feel the bugs hitting the tops of the
cylinders. If conical, make sure the mounts are Lord Mounts.

      6. Fuel and fuel system deviation from "norm"?

Maybe a chance of fuel getting too hot and boiling either in a line or the
carb bowl. Especially if auto gas and it is hot outside.

      7. Prop *tracking*? (especially if wood)

Metal is probably hard to be out of "alignment" but wood can be based on how
      it is torqued.

Just some things to jumpstart the dialog again.

      James
