Subject: | Please Read - Who is "Matt Dralle" and What are "The |
Lists"...?
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
Who is Matt Dralle and what exactly are these Lists? Well, I've been working in
the information technology industry for over 20 years primarily in computer
networking design and implementation. I've also had a rather extensive background
in web development and CGI design during this period.
I started the Matronics Email Lists back in 1990 with about 30 fellow RV builders
from around the world. Since that time, I have added 50 other kinds of aircraft
related Lists to the line up and numerous other List related services such
as the Archives and Search Engine just to name a few.
For the upmost in flexibility and reliability, I have chosen to run all of my own
servers here locally. Other support systems include a 1 Gigabit, fully switched
network infrastructure, a commercial-grade Netscreen firewall, a Barracuda
spam filter, a local T1 Internet router, and a commercial business T1 Internet
connection with static addressing.
The computer servers found here include two, dual processor Xeon Linux systems
dedicated to the email and web functions respectfully, and another P4 Linux system
serving as a remote storage disk farm for the archives, databases, and for
an on-line, hard drive-based backup system with 3.2 Terabytes of storage. This
entire system is protected by multiple commercial-grade uninterrupted power
supply (UPS) systems that assure the Lists are available even during a local
power outage!
I recently upgraded all of the computer racking infrastructure including new power
feeds and dedicated air conditioning for the room that serves as the Computer
Center for the Matronics Email Lists. Here's a new composite photo of the
List Computer Center following this Summer's upgrades!
http://www.matronics.com/MattDralle-ListComputerCenter.jpg
As you can see, I take running these Lists very seriously and I am dedicated to
providing an always-on, 24x7x365 experience for each and every Lister.
But building and running this system isn't cheap. As I've stated before, I don't
support any of these systems with commercial advertising on the Lists. It
is supported 100% through List member Contributions! That means you... and you...
and YOU!
To that end, I hold a List Fund Raiser each November and ask that members make
a small Contribution to support the continued operation and upgrade of this ever-expanding
system. Its solely YOUR Contributions that keep it running!
Please make a Contribution today to support these Lists!
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
Thank you!

Stormy,
Sorry to hear that your scud running ended short of home.
and really sorry I wasn't there at Louisa to visit with you while Miriam came to
get you.
Talking and looking at Rv's is surely better than sitting in an FBO watching TV.
I was in northern va and the ceiling was high enough without rain for you to be
ok, but my wife was in C'ville visiting with the grandkids and said it was raining
and ugly, so you surely hit a wall.
I'd be glad to help if I can at LKU........if your stay gets extended, I might
be able to stuff the 3 planes in your hangar around to squeeze you in........or
work a better deal with the FBO for staying in his big hangar.
Is it ok to move your plane without you being there?
Do you have a cover on it?

Well, Thanksgiving weekend is in the archives now, and the work week resumes
for me with a vengeance tomorrow. I took my daughter back to college in the RV
this afternoon, and wouldn't you know the wx was immediately worse than forecast.
Shoot, it was worse that the current observations I had checked 10 minutes
before. Ignoring the voice of reason that told me to turn back immediately
and pack the car instead, I pressed on eastward into lowering overcast and patches
of 1-2 miles vis in showers, fully expecting to make Newport News withjout
incident, and by then fully expecting to have quite a time of it getting as
far back home as I could. That's about how it went, too. KPHF wx was as nice
as I was told to expect, but back in the vicinity of RIC, the gauntlet remained
to be run. I made it as far as western edge of the Ric Class C before the
looks of things westward got too spooky. Set course for CHO, but the Approach
freq was full of traffic wanting vectors around leve
l 3 precip. No thanks! Hasty 180 to my last landmark with decent viz, namely
Louisa, where I landed in a driving rain and 5 miles reported visibility (yeah,
right) below a 1600 foot ceiling. Brought back memories of some foolishness
I was part of coming home from OSH last year, off the edge of Chicago's class
B ;-)
Miriam and I got home in the car tonight about the same time we would have had
we driven Melanie to Christopher Newport in the car. Plus, my baby is out in
the rain (too cheap to pop for hangar rent for who knows how long) and I get
to retrieve her later when the weather breaks. Oh well, at least I got to fly
today. A chance to scare yourself in an airplane- priceless. I did this same
stuck-away-from-home trick 14 years ago, with a rented Cessna 152, when the
ink on my ticket was still wet. One stranding every 14 years-maybe not a bad
average overall for VFR-boy.
Bob & Larry: no grafitti on my airplane while I'm away!
Lesson learned: when wx is twice as bad as forecast right out of the gate, you
should hear an inner voice saying "turn back." 2: when you hear said voice,
listen quickly, before you get far enough into your trip to talk yourself into
pushing on. 3: Got time to spare? Go by air! 4: Santa, I want an IFR plane

home to a private strip that is itself below minimums.

Howdy James et al-
New to your list so didn't see thread on vibration- I have similar situation-
mostly since painting and suspect heavy paint on one side of spinner. Not
all that pronounced, but there nonetheless and somewhat annoying. Dynamic
balancing helped, but some still there. I have 150hp E3D, Catto 3-blade, and worst
vibes in 1800-1900 range, also typically felt when decelerating on downwind.
Is 3-blade still available from Wayne8? If so, what pitch?
Mine's a 66x66 on a 7/16" hole Sabre extention & would like to try a 68-70
pitch.
Thanks-

engine is a O-320 with 160 horsepower. Total time since new is roughly 2210
hours. Engine was new in 1986 on a Cessna 172. It has not been overhauled or
top overhauled. Compression is quite even at 70, 75, 75, 71 over 80 tested
back in may which was about 60 hobbs hours ago.
prop is a METAL Sensenich model number 70cm7s9-0-81 it was new when
installed on the plane, so it has roughly 238 hobbs hours on it. This is a
fixed Pitch prop
All rpms there is vibration. At full idle it is not too bad, and at 2500 or
higher it is not too bad, but anywhere in between it is bothersome, and
expecially between 900 to 1600 rpm it feels like a paint shaker.
It's got a carb. And I have no idea if or how it is adjusted.... funny thing
is the fellow who built the plane blamed the carb for the vibration. BUT,
since the vibrations were noted from the 1st flight on, if it were the carb
and he knew it, why in the world would he not adjust the carb? Seems like it
would have to be a easy thing to adjust.....
Dynafocal mounts.
Fuel system is normal from what I can see. the fuel pressure is lower than
the green arc alot of the time though, usually only showing 1 PSI or so.
There is a possibility that the engine driven pump may not be working
properly, but don't know how to check for that. I normally use the boost
pump to get to the green arc before starting the engine and once started I
turn the boost pump off. Just before takeoff I turn the boost pump on and
leave it on till I climb though 2500 feet and then turn it back off again. I
usually don't turn it back on in flight except when switching tanks or when
I am back in the pattern for landings. With the boost pump on I still only
get to the bottom edge of the green arc, and when I turn the pump off,
sometimes the pressure will maintain itself, or more often than not it will
drop to about 2 psi, and sometimes it will go to nearly zero. The engine
seems to run fine no matter what the gauge shows, so I haven't worried about
it, but I am mentioning it cause maybe it could be a factor in something
else????
I do use 93 Octane Car gas 90 percent of the time. It does not seem to run
any better on Av-gas and from what I have caculated, it burns about 1 gallon
per hour more fuel with Av-gas ( 7.3 with car gas, 8.35 with Av-gas )
I have had someone in the air who was flying alongside me - Barry Thigpen -
tell me my prop looked to be flying out of track, and then had someone on
the ground who was standing beside the plane while I was warming up the
engine - Mike Bick - tell me the same thing. When I took the plane to the
shop for the prop balance one thing we checked was tracking and we did two
different tests and both tests it checked out true. My fut feeling is that
when the vibrations are at their worse the engine is moving around enough to
make the prop appear to be out of track.
Larry Bowen flew in my plane last weekend and he didn't think it felt bad at
all. I don't want my descriptions to make my plane sound like it is shaking
like a jackhammer, it is not. But it is far from smooth and too rough in my
opinion and it will destroy the plane over time if left alone. Mike Bicks RV
was so smooth - his has a new 180 horse engine and a wood prop - that I am
feeling like I am flying a clunker now! I may try to see if Bill will meet
me today or tomorrow if it ends up being a rainy pair of days and see if we
can swap the entire prop assemblys on our planes and test them both out to
see if changing props makes mine smoother and his rougher. That would show
me that I got a prop problem and not a engine or mount or fuel system
problem. But I am not sure if I can even get in touch with Bill or not, he
is one Busy Bee!

Actually, solid pink might be easier to repair damage to than the two-tone pearl/clear
job I went with- go for it!

A quick test would be to fly it without the spinner.
Dynafocal or Conical mount?? If conical make SURE they are LORD mounts. THey
cost more but mae a real difference.
I assume the blades all track fine.

Well that't the right prop pewr Van's (assuming a 2 1/4" spacer I think).
All rpms there is vibration. At full idle it is not too bad, and at 2500 or

Can you notice that if it does it at 900, does it do it at 1800 (2x)? Is
there some point where it does it at an RPM and 2x the RPM? To me that would
imply more on the harmonics side.
It's got a carb. And I have no idea if or how it is adjusted.... funny thing

There are a few guys out there who can tell just by listening it seems
whether a carb is right or not. A tweak here and a tweak there and you are
all set if that is it. There is a guy in Camden that is pretty good at that
(and he works on RVs!!) :-)
Dynafocal mounts.
Great!! I assume the bolts are torqued OK. There probably would be signs of
wear if they were not.
Fuel system is normal from what I can see. the fuel pressure is lower than

I would assume that there would be a significant change in fuel pressure if
there was a problem with that pump.
I also seem to recall that the Lyc's will run on a minimum of 0.5 PSI!! (now
don't bank on that, it is just something I seem to recall). I have been in
an RV showing about 1 PSI and all ran fine. But I tell ya, it did not "feel
right" looking at that fuel pressure gauge that low even though the plane
was humming along. Could have been the transducer or the gauge. DOn't know.

Try a flight WITHOUT turn the boost pump off. Can be the same time you do a
NO SPINNER flight. (I know, you will have changed two things but if ALL is
smooth that way, you can later turn the boost pump OFF and see what happens.
I do use 93 Octane Car gas 90 percent of the time. It does not seem to run

It should be happy with 93 Octane (you do take off and land with Avgas don't
you ... just in case???)
I have had someone in the air who was flying alongside me - Barry Thigpen -

Sounds like "... a whole lotta shaking going on ... " Leads me back to the
engine mount. All bolts good and tight? Good rubber donuts? Torqued OK? No
CRACKS in mount????????
Larry Bowen flew in my plane last weekend and he didn't think it felt bad at

Is Mike's plane a 4 or 6 or 8? Vibrations probably transmitted differently.
Wood is smoother. Of course we have a wood prop on "PapaJuliette" and I had
all kinds of vibrations for a while (at least I thought ... others told me I
was over the top). Engine mounts, exhaust stacks hitting the underside of
the fuselage, timing, good plug wires, clean plugs etc. all come into the
mix. The biggest for me was the mounts.

Bill (Crothers I assume) can be reached via cell phone. I was on the phone
with him earlier today about some formation stuff. Be advised that he has a
150 HP engine.
Are you considering switching to a wood prop?? If so, let's talk.

--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Ron and Shannon AWAD" <sawad13@msn.com>
Ihave looked at the mount and it does not look to be broken or anything
wrong with it, but of course I am not a expert by any means so there could
be a problem I am missing. I have not checked anything for torque and don't
even own a torque wrench....
I have flown with the fuel pump on continuously and noted no change in
anything.
Virbration does not seem to be the harmonic type you refer to.
Plane was built in Camden I believe - or maybe not??? There was a military
base real close to the airport the plane was built at and the people there
are big Gamecocks fans.....????
I use Auto gas in both tanks. No Av gas unless I am away from home and need
gas. For example right now my tanks - both of them - got a combined 19
gallons of av gas Saturday before coming home from Macon Georgia. This was
the first time in months I put any Av gas in it, and of course when I got
back home I topped my tanks back full with more 93 octane car gas....
Mikes plane is a RV-4 same mount, just bigger engine and wood prop.
I got Bills number, just need to call him.
I am not sure if I want to switch to wood or not. Not sure if there is any
good reason to have one style over another. I just know if my plane was as
smooth as Mikes, I would be in RV heaven. Do you want to do some swapping
with me on props?
