Why did you decide against the more readily available Mobil1 synthetic ATF
option that others are using? Just curious....

Good question, Larry.
I guess there are several reasons for my decision (with some supporting comments
- but not proof - in italics)
1. Not certain how insurance company would handle any possible claim resulting
from a brake failure if you were not using an hydraulic fluid approved for "Aircraft"
brakes.
2. There is still some questions about the suitability of some of the other fluids
as candidates. For instance I have read (don't know if its a fact or not)
that DOT 5 can absorb moisture over time which can cause corrosion of aluminum
brake parts (automobiles use steel parts).
I would be careful with ATF. The high detergent level may or may not be compatible
with seals. Why not use a fluid DESIGNED for the task.
3. Cold weather may affect the operation of the ATV
I tried using ATF, as I'd also read good reports on it, however recently I
had to fill the system after changing the tires & brakes and found that it
was impossible to fill the system at -15C, so with great difficulty I purged
and flushed the ATF out of the system and am now using DOT5. ATF may be
suitable for use in warmer climates, but didn't cut it up here in the frozen
north.
Now I am unlikely (I hope) to ever be operating where the temps are - 15C!!!, but
thought it was interesting.
But, the biggest reason is I did not want to make it easy for an insurance company
to invalidate any claim that might arise.

I'm looking for a destination too. Ideas?
I've sent the RUQ paint shop a check to hold 1/16/06 for my plane. Finally
getting painted! The last big $tep....

Kahuna,
This is remarkable information!!!
I wonder why Van's would withold such information?
Thanks to Randy for discovering this info and for sharing it with us.
Stan Sutterfield
In a message dated 12/18/05 3:09:36 AM Eastern Standard Time,
rvsoutheast-list-digest@matronics.com writes:
This figure however does NOT include fuel in WING tanks which is what
was not clear. Note that any fuel in a fuselage tank WOULD be included
in the Aerobatic gross.
Interestingly, he confirmed that this method applies to any RV model. As
an RV-8 builder/pilot I interpreted Van's W&B instructions to mean that
fuel WAS included in Aerobatic Category gross weight calculations as
well as Utility/Normal Category gross weight operation. In fact that is
erroneous -- as long as the fuel is in wing tanks it may be excluded
from the Aerobatic calculation and limit. Of course Van's points out
that weight has other deleterious effects on aerobatic handling and
encourages pilots to use good judgement when loading their aircraft for
aerobatics.
