I wish you would stop posting these messages. I'm stuck here in Virginia Beach
thrashing all about the Atlantic coast looking for whales in a Skymaster and
you guys are flailing around South Carolina in RV's flying formation. Anybody
want to trade positions? I'm headed back to Gold Hill today and hope to get a
few days to paint some insignia on the RV-8. I'm so close that I can smell the
end! (Not that end!) ;-) I was thrilled to hear that Larry Bowen is going
to do a military paint job on his RV-8. We'll be like squadron mates! Rest assured
that I'll head straight for Colunbia as soon as I get this thing in the
air and join your formation. Anybody interested in formation aerobatics? It's
the next step and a whole lot of fun.
Larry, hope to see you next week. Bring a camera and a tape measure and we'll
get all those insignia measurements you need for the paint job. Are you doing
smoke?
While I'm on the subject, Len, don't you have smoke? Where is a cheapo place to
get oil? Best I have heard so far is "form oil" by the drum at a supplier in
Charlotte.
Thanks for the blow=by=blow of your Saturday flying. It keeps me motivated.

We had another great practice day with James & Ken playing host down in
Columbia. If you have not made that trip ... come with us next time .... the
BBQ
down there is fabulous ... and lots to choose from ..... only place I know
that has better is Texas !!! (joke !!)
Bill Crothers in AA, Len in LL, Larry in WN went down ....
High overcast day and very smooth flying above 2000' ... great practice with
Larry Bowen in Whiskey November flying the number 4 spot with a very small
passenger in the back ... do wish I had a camera when they first loaded up ...
James flew back seat with Larry to help talk him through some of the flight
... when Larry got in and closed the canopy ... the only thing we could see in
the back seat was James' eyes .... booster seat please !!!
Ken led us through a great practice ... Larry flew very well. Debrief and
lunch at "The Pig" ... you just have to try it ... they offer 6 or 7 different
types of bbq and then top it off with a small pig to pick from ... all you
can eat !!!
Larry had to depart early ... so James saddled up Pappa Juliet ... as soon
as we started taxiing ... the rain came ... more rain on climb out and the wood
props had to head for shelter ... Bill and I continued with the flight
back to NC with Ken running advance protection for a few miles ... all in all
another great day in the RV ...
These flights come up pretty quick ... not a lot of advance planning ... any
and all are welcome to come make the flight .. you don't have to fly
formation ... that is something a few of us have fallen in love with .... just
the
fun of a gaggle of RVs heading somewhere for lunch is great ... we always have
open back seats for the formation part if interested.
Until next time ....
3's out !!!

I looked everywhere and found nothing cheap ... that would not clog the
injectors ...
Ended up buying a 50 gallon drum of oil from one of our own SERV members who
flies a Rocket and owns an oil compnay down in Elizabethtown ... spent much
more money than I wanted too ... but got what I wanted.
Could find nothing in the Greensboro/Winston area ...
Len
Looking forward to you getting in the air and joining in with us !!!

Yes, I'll see you next week.
I haven't thought seriously about smoke so far. Maybe when everything else is
done (ha!). Len's came in handy when the four of us were in the pattern with
a Skyhawk Saturday. He was turning into us, didn't see us until Len gave him
a little puff. Cool......

Subject: | Need some help ....... RV8/8A flaps |
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: Craig <craigtxtx@yahoo.com>
I am now officially frustrated. After several days of measuring, trimming, test
fitting and generally scratching my head and pondering, I am still no closer
to figuring out how to make these flaps fit well. I have the wings installed
for the first time and am in the process of preparing to drill the sacred rear
spar bolt holes. Per Van's instructions, I am also test fitting the flaps.
With the wing set up properly (I think), the left flap fits reasonably well,
but is about 1/8" below the fuselage bottom in the up position. The trailing
edge of the right flap ends up about 1/4" lower than the trailing edge of the
left flap. This is a very noticeable difference. Also, I may have trimmed too
much off of the inboard end of the top flap skin........ not sure if the flap
fairing will cover that........ if I can figure out how to make the flap fairing
work at all with the current flap fit up.
In short, I really need to look at one that actually works and would greatly
appreciate someone who has done this before laying an eyeball on mine. If any
of you 8/8A drivers need a destination to fly to and have time to stop by 6NC3,
Eastover Air Ranch in Fayetteville in the coming days, I would greatly appreciate
some advice. Lunch is on me of course! With the exception of Saturday
and Sunday, I am open to most any time from tomorrow through next Monday. Give
me a call if you think you can help, 910-257-1842.
I know this is a busy time of year for everyone, but I would appreciate the help
if possible.
Thanks.

Also, I may have trimmed
too much off of the inboard end of the top flap skin........ not sure if the flap
fairing will cover that........ if I can figure out how to make the flap fairing
work at all with the current flap fit up.
In short, I really need to look at one that actually works and would greatly
appreciate someone who has done this before laying an eyeball on mine. If
any of you 8/8A drivers need a destination to fly to and have time to stop by
6NC3, Eastover Air Ranch in Fayetteville in the coming days, I would greatly appreciate
some advice. Lunch is on me of course! With the exception of Saturday
and Sunday, I am open to most any time from tomorrow through next Monday.
Give me a call if you think you can help, 910-257-1842.
I know this is a busy time of year for everyone, but I would appreciate the
help if possible.
Thanks.

I might be able to come down on Monday.
I wouldn't 'final trim' them until those rear bolts are in.

Steve,
The flap actuation rods are not in, but the flaps line up with the ailerons in
the "in trail" position. I understand that is the full up position.

Larry,
Monday would work if you can make it. Let me know as the time gets closer.
I have pretty much resolved not to cut any more on anything until I figure out
what is wrong.
Thanks,

The point i was making ed was that we are flying experimental for the same
reason you are.My plane has not caught on fire ether, but i have personal
knowledge of a few rx7,s on fire. The point is if you find something as good
as the high dollar stuff why not use it.

I do agree, Ben, if you find something as good as the high dollar hydraulic
fluid that is fully compatible with our brake systems (even if you have to
change seals in the master cylinders as well as the calipers), its probably
worth it.
However, I did not want to find myself needing brake fluid at some far
flung airport and they not having anything compatible. With the MIL-H-83282
in my system, I can easily find and top off (or fill up) with the standard
5605 and no harm done and in the mean time I have some better degree of fire
protection. Might not be that easy with some of the other fluids.
However, I personally feel that by going to the SS braided brake lines I've
have considerably reduced the probably of ever needing the higher flash
point stuff - but just in case {:>).
Just my 0.02 worth.
