Points all well-taken, Ron. But don't be surprised if the warning label isn't
changed to say, "Warning: this aircraft is amateur built and does not comply with
federal safety regualtions. As far as we know, it is being maintained and
tinkered with by persons not involved in its construction and about whose qualifications
the FAA has no knowledge whatsoever, whose work is inspected just
once a year."
I'd be for such a change, and the people who engrave aircraft placards would probably
be gladdened as well ;-)
This has parallels in medicine, where we are now treated to Black Box Warnings
with dire pronouncements like, "This medication, while shown to help your ADHD
kid sit still, may also be helping him form a plan to act on the suicidal impulses
it has been shown to induce sometimes. Good luck, and keep an eye on him.
We warned you." (I am paraphrasing, of course.)
This revelation about carte-blanche modification of experimentals by non-certificated
individuals has both educated and disturbed me. My philosophy would be,
"if you want to experiment with it, be the builder or become the A&P." Don't
worry, though; I'm not likely to become the king of the world and get my way
in such matters.
Have a good day. I consider the thread fairly-well covered by now, at least from
my end.

Stormy, if you think about..... On our RV airplanes, they are not really all
that experimental. Other than a few like Ed Anderson who are "experimenting"
with auto engines, and some who try different cowl mods etc...
Our RV's are pretty much per plans and Most people - be it the pilot, the
owner, the mechanics, the passengers - they all can expect a certain
something of the plane. This is probably one reason insurance for a RV is
not too expensive.
But what if you or I decided to make our own plane from scratch. What if we
decided to power it with 4 Briggs lawnmower engines linked to turn one prop,
and we decided to make it a TriWing, and maybe we want to do some other
weird stuff like put both a nose wheel and a tailwheel and make the plane
able to use either depending on field and wind conditions. Maybe we decide
to make the plane out of molded plastic or half aluminum and half wood....
I could go on and on, but my point is that on " our " homemade plane there
is nothing that is a given about it and nothing about it is "certain" other
than we made it ourselves.
The beauty of Amauter build Experimental rules we have here in the USA is
that we could build a kit from Vans and have pretty much as good of a
airplane as any Cessna and have the flexibilty to do our own maintance and
annuals, plus do modifications as we see fit..... but we also have it good
in that we can truely experiment, even if it is not what you or I or the
engineers at Cessna thinks is safe.
As for passengers.... this is the reason for the words WARNING EXPERIMENTAL
in bold letters to be in plain view. This is a warning and any passenger-
and really any pilot- should take very seriously. I mean who in the world
would go to some fair or theme park and hop on a roller coaster someone
designed on a paper towel and had the words WARNING HOME BUILT EXPERIMENTAL
ROLLER COASTER ?????????? Not me!!!
Now up until a year or so ago the rules about flying a experimental were
even very loose. By this I mean that say that the rules were, any person
holding ANY pilot certificate rating higher than Glider - it could be
Rotorcraft, or Fixed Wing - could fly any type of Experimental..... AND
carry passengers, all without specific type requirements. Example, A person
with Airplane private pilot certificate Single engine land could legally go
out and buy or build a experimental Helicopter and fly it legally by himself
or with a passenger and legally he would not have to have any helicopter
endorsements, additional ratings, or even the first hour of helicopter
instruction.
Why would the rules allow for such madness???
It goes back to the intent of the whole class of being experimental. And it
makes it easy to experiment......
For example, what if you took your typical RV-6 airframe. To fly it as a
Certified plane you would need SEL airplane. If has a tailwheel so you would
also need a tailwheel endorsement. Then you "experiment" and add floats to
land it on the lake, so now you need a seaplane endorsement too. Later you
decide to boost the engines power to 230 hp so now you need a Hi performance
endorsement. After a year or two your bored so you come up with a plan to
add a pylon and you install a set of rotorblades above the thing so once you
takeoff you can fly it as a autogyro, this way you will never have to worry
about stalling while your flying slow over the lake. So now you need a
Rotorcraft / Gyroplane add-on to your certificate. Later you decide if you
power the rotors you could hover and this would allow you to land it and
takeoff from the small pond behind your house, so now you need to go and get
your helicopter add-on as well.................... Now is this a likely
thing, A RV-6 turned into a helicopter on floats? Probably never, but the
beauty of our laws is we got the freedom to do that, and the additional
freedom to do it without having to become over burdened with rules and regs
and so on to do it.
The laws are always changing and one day I would not be surprised to see
these freedoms taken away.
Already the laws have changed as far as carrying passengers go. If you want
to carry a passenger in a experimental aircraft today, you need the most
approriate rating for the type of aircraft it is. So if it is a Rotorway
Exec helicopter you will need a Private Pilot rating Rotorcraft/helicopter.
If it is a Vans RV-4 like mine, you will need a PP SEL with tailwheel
endorsement. YOU can still fly ANY experimental with ANY rating - airplane
pilot flying a helicopter for example - but only solo, no passengers without
specific type rating.

We've met. I was here at work in my serious mode and did not pick on
Stormy's "personality".
Hope that all have a great time. I was planning on going down, stopping at
LAL, then on to Sebring for the Sport Aviation weekend they are having,
then on to Lake Placid Sat. night to swap the RV8 for the 170. Sat. does
not look like a fun day for flying with the forecast winds. So, I have the
RV8 for another week or two. Gosh darn!!!!!!

Don't blame you Stormy. It's the forecast for GNV and JAX that are bothering me.
Looks like you could get to Florida and then have to turn back and be stuck
out as far as getting back home. A day or more at some Podunk Airport may not
be fun.
It's still a close call.

OH! I didn't realize that was you, Bill! The N-Number did it for me.
Sorry for the confusion!
These "callsign" thing-a-majigs are SOOO CONFUSING! Is it the plane
or the pilot? Is it both? Does it depend?
Oh, and for the record, I call dibbs on "The High Road" for my
airplane's name. I'm going to paint the tail in my family tartan, and
have an airbrush guy put some sexist "highland wench" art on the nose.
What can I say? I'm a traditionalist! <grin>

Here is the official statement from Laura Cook:
Cappy
RV WEEKEND POSTPONED DUE TO INCOMING BAD WEATHER. RESCHEDULED FOR RAIN DATE OF
JANUARY 20/21/22 2005. PLEASE CALL 386-935-2973 WITH ANY QUESTIONS.
Unfortunately, It appears that Friday the 13th had shown its ugly side weather
wise. Despite favorable projections as recently as 24 hours previous, the most
recent projected weather for the Southeast, including Florida, includes a passing
cold front with associated severe weather. This front is bringing severe
thunderstorms, rain/hail and high wind. This front is forecast to cover NC,
GA, AL and parts of North Florida by Friday afternoon. It is forecast to pass
through Lakeland area 2 AM Saturday morning leaving clear, but cold and windy
(gusts to 30 mph) Saturday. Additionally, there is activity in the gulf that
appears will move onshore in the northern part of the state early this morning
and while not severe - will bring clouds and reduced visibility making problematic
any attempted flights from areas north of Florida early this morning
to "beat" the main cold front.
Regretfully, we have decided to cancel the activity schedule for this weekend and
revert to our "RAINDATE" OF 20, 21, 22 Jan (next weekend). Hopefully, this
means that many who would not have been able to reach Lakeland this weekend due
to the weather, will be able to make our rain date. Again, we truly regret
the timing of this notice, but would not want to entice anyone to brave these
conditions. See you next weekend.

Subject: RV Weekend at LAKELAND POSTPONED - PLEASE READ
Importance: High
RV WEEKEND POSTPONED DUE TO INCOMING BAD WEATHER. RESCHEDULED FOR RAIN DATE
OF JANUARY 20/21/22 2005. PLEASE CALL 386-935-2973 WITH ANY QUESTIONS.
Unfortunately, It appears that Friday the 13th had shown its ugly side
weather wise. Despite favorable projections as recently as 24 hours
previous, the most recent projected weather for the Southeast, including
Florida, includes a passing cold front with associated severe weather. This
front is bringing severe thunderstorms, rain/hail and high wind. This
front is forecast to cover NC, GA, AL and parts of North Florida by Friday
afternoon. It is forecast to pass through Lakeland area 2 AM Saturday
morning leaving clear, but cold and windy (gusts to 30 mph) Saturday.
Additionally, there is activity in the gulf that appears will move onshore
in the northern part of the state early this morning and while not severe -
will bring clouds and reduced visibility making problematic any attempted
flights from areas north of Florida early this morning to "beat" the main
cold front.
Regretfully, we have decided to cancel the activity schedule for this
weekend and revert to our "RAINDATE" OF 20, 21, 22 Jan (next weekend).
Hopefully, this means that many who would not have been able to reach
Lakeland this weekend due to the weather, will be able to make our rain
date. Again, we truly regret the timing of this notice, but would not want
to entice anyone to brave these conditions. See you next weekend.

Rats. Oh well -- Makes the decision easy. I plan to have my plane in the
paint shop starting 1/16, so I'll miss next weekend. I'll just set my
sights on SNF in April.

Done. The cancellation deadline was yesterday, but they didn't mention that

Stormy, I know some people that should not build a airplane.... In other
words If these people built a plane things would be pretty scary. Now
because they successfully built a plane and got a airworthiness certificate,
to me that does not automatically make them more qualified than someone who
hasn't ever built a airplane.
Onto A&P mechanics.... I have friends that are A&P mechanics who work for
the airlines. Not to say all airline mechanics are the same, but some of
those guys I know Know nothing about General aviation... Small planes....
Small engines.... Etc... etc.... etc....
I have also ran across a few A&P mechanics that were just plain half-assed.
Not to mention some that are dishonest and will make logbook entrys that
really shouldn't be made, etc....
The bottom line is experimental aircraft are not the same as factory
certified aircraft. Experimental by nature means there is more risk
involved, this is why insurance is somewhat more over a simular certified
counterpart... this is the reasoning behind the placards.... this is the
reasoning behind the test phases....etc...
I think as a whole, Experimental aircraft can be and are safe. Even with
these lax rules.
Some of the appeal of experimental is that it is cheaper to own and easier
to maintain.

Fellow flyers. I am at the point of needing to weight my 7A. Does anyone know
how to accomplish this and where to beg, borrow or steal adaquate scales.
Thanks

Jon Long at Goose Creek has fancy scales. Weight the plane down in his
hangar.

Probably a good call on their part. Hope Ed fares okay getting back.
Stormy is on call next weekend; maybe it's not too late to trade...

Nice idea for a name, Robbie. I've entertained hundreds of possibilities for mine
over the years, but never painted anything on, so far. I'm thinking of "Rubbish"
or possibly "Triacle" for now. That second one should get you Googling
;-)
So far, though, the nose is devoid of art.
The callsign comes from my ability to jinx the wx for any event I plan to attend,
e.g. Lakeland this weekend.

<grin>

"A salve against some malady" is my attempt at a definition of
triacle after perusing the various (and quite limited) google
results. That reminds me of a local pharmacist who's license plate
(on his Porsche) reads "MYELAVIL"...
Perhaps some hillbilly witchdoctor has put a hex on you? My family
comes from Tellico Plains, TN and if your manse is similarly
ensconced, I wouldn't be surprised if you had a few living in the
immediate surroundings!
Sorry about Lakeland. Y'all have a good weekend anyway. I'm going to
the boat show in Myrtle Beach this weekend. My dad and I will be at
the in-water show at the new Grande Dunes marina on the waterway at
the north end of Myrtle Beach proper on Saturday morning. They have a
bunch of exhibits at the convention center too.

Tad,
It is possible to do it with 5-6 bathroom scales.
We did our 6 with 5 (2 per main and 1 per tailwheel).
Recently I re-weighed it because a friend had some "racing" (NASCAR???)
scales on loan. Came out about the same (I filled the fuel tanks and
calculated that part of the weight for the "original" empty weight
measurement.
James
p.s. We even have a set you could borrow but I suspect it will be easier to
go to Wal-Mart and get some 300 lb each scales.
p.p.s. <you probably already know all this but ....> 2 per main with a
platform. Zero out the scales with platform or note weight. If you don't
trust them put on something of known weight for "calibration". Small ramp to
pull it up on scales. You should be less than 600 lbs per main and I would
hope less than 300 per nosegear.

I would love to Bill, but I have finally gotten someone to agree to meet me
Saturday am to do some much needed work on my apartment in Savannah.
Timing couldn't have been worse, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
May or may not fly to Sun n' Money in the spring either. I should have my
new F1 kit by then and may have to "truck" down to the Lakeland so I can
haul all the "goodies" I will need back to SC. If that changes, then we
should get together with James (and others) and join up again for the
flight down. Maybe James won't be so tough on my weak form flying skills
this time!! See you there, one way or another.

Will you already be there and doing some prep work or just dropping Nifty off?
I can do 4PM but 3 PM will be much better so I can get home for dinner.

OK no one is responding to the call for Sunday.
How about Blue Ridge (KMTV on Cincinnati Sectional) for a late lunch. How about
1 PM. Wives are welcome.

3 will be good. Not sure how it's going to work really. Never done this

My understanding is that, in medieval lore, triacle was the fabled universal cure
for everything. Perhaps it's similar to El Dorado and the Fountain of Youth.
MYELAVIL; I hear you ;-)
We've got rednecks aplenty here, very similar to hillbillies... you can't swing
a dead cat hereabouts without hittin' one.
Enjoy the boat show, and the time with your Dad - make that count.
