Randy and Cappy had a perfect trip down on Thursday.
Saturday return at 8:00 AM was a bit more exciting. After TO LAL we found ourselves
on top at 2000'. Managed to find clear air over Willistin FL, X60 and landed
there for a while. Decided to take it on top to SSI where there was more
clear air. Clear all the way till SC where we did some fancy maneuvering and
got underneath. We made it almost to LKR when we hit a solid wall of rain that
forced us more and more NE. Sometimes rough and windy, once we had a 40+
KT wind. Anyway we made Stanley county were we waited and watched the computer
for a good gap. We shot the gap and got back to JQF about 2:00 PM.
Cappy's Toy doesn't leak.
It was great seeing everyone at Sun N Fun. I think I saw everyone except Stormy
and Len. I think we talked to Larry as he was returning on Thursday.

Cappy

Dennis got back Sunday evening around 6:30pm, and said he had a great time. He
said the Saturday TO at LAL was challenging, since they shut down the field as
IFR, and when it opened up VFR again around 10am, everyone tried to leave at
once. (c: He flew over to Merritt Island for Saturday night with his favorite
cousin.
His birthday was Saturday, so while he was gone, I made him a quilted wall-hanging
featuring his airplane pictures (construction and flying) and surprised him
with it when he returned. He was *very* surprised. He brought me back a t-shirt,
so we are even. GRIN. I'll send Larry a copy of the picture so he can post
it.

Hi All,
Saw the last of Bill Cruthers as we split prior to entering the holding
pattern over Lake Parker on Thursday. The trip was uneventful except
for Bill's broken headset which made the first half NORDO for all
intents. I gave Bill my second headset at our fuel stop at Alma and the
rest of the flight down went well until we got to the Lake where we had
to hold forever due to departures from KLAL. I got tired of doing left
hand circles and diverted the Zepher Hills to cool my heels for a few
minutes, returned to the lake and got right in.
I was trying to depart with Cappy on Saturday AM, but you have to get up
really early to keep up with him. "You're retired now Steve! Sleep
later!" Since the weather up north was crappy on Saturday I planned to
head for Sandy Creek Airpark near Panama City to meet up with my old Air
Force buddy, Ed O'Connor. Ed and I flew OV-10's together in Vietnam and
later as IPs at Hurlburt Field in Wt. Walton Beach. Ed just finished
his RV-8 and flew it for the first time two weeks ago. Since he
couldn't get his Phase I testing complete in time for Sun-n-Fun we had
our own airshow over his airpark on Sunday before I left for Gold Hill.
Ed and I last flew formation together in 1976 so it was great to get
back together again after 30 years!
Made it back to NC25 in the early afternoon and will be busy doing some
maintenance on "Miss Izzy" for a few days. Hope everyone had a great
trip and came home safely.

"Miss Izzy" looked great out there on the line Ron. It is already in some of
the SnF photo postings! :-)
Hope all is well and the maintenance is minor.
We flew back on Sunday as a 3-ship .. Ken and Steve, Patty and me, plus
Bill. Went to Brooksville and picked up Nancy and then to Cedar Key for
lunch. Afterwards on to KCUB. After taking a break at KCUB, Bill headed
home. Good trip.
Our most "interesting" time was Saturday night's "weather event". We were
surprised that out tents didn't get blown away or that we didn't get flooded
out!

All,
Flew the C170 down Thur. Fantastic weather and uneventful LAL arrival.
Finally met up with Steve, Randy, Ron, & Dale on Friday at lunch, then lost
them. Friday evening, I was sitting at the plane resting my tired bones
and I saw James getting gas for his six, parked just a hundred yards from
where I was camped. I walked over and ran into Bill and Ken as they were
all camped together. I decided to leave late Sat morning to head south to
Lake Placid to swap the 170 for the RV8 with my cousin. I left Lake Placid
Sunday around noon. Had to fly under the low cloud deck all the way up to
Jekyll Island, then up to 7500' in severe clear, silky smooth sky. Great
flight.

Trip down on Wed. afternoon went well. Stopped for fuel at Alma/Bacon County
GA., price $2.90, and was the only airplane in sight.
At SNF, saw Cappy & Randy, Ron Schreck, Mike Munn and Chris & Sue Good from
Wisconsin who I know form my Chicago RV days.
On return, I decided to sit tight for one more day on Sat. AM because of
the weather as I watched Cappy and Randy depart. But later thought I should
have followed them. LAL got a heck of a thunder storm Sat night. In my tent
it looked - sounded - felt like I was going to be dead any moment!
By 7 AM Sunday things were looking much better. However, FSS said low
ceilings in north FL and southern GA. After TO at LAL I was on top of a
very broken layer for a half hour. It started closing in.and I did 360 to
down under and flew at 1000 feet all the way to Bacon County. Landed for
fuel once again only this time I was about the 10th in line. Place was
packed with planes headed north. Remainder of trip back to Aero Plantation
was at 5500 feet in beautiful sunshine.
Got a real feel for the RV performance on TO from LAL. Airplane next to me
on the runway was a Mooney who was waved off about 15-20 seconds ahead of me
in the staggered release. I went past him before we reached the end of the
runway and then I had to maneuver to avoid the Cessna who had taken off on
my side of the runway in the twosome that was ahead of us.
My one day extension at SNF was costly but good, I guess. Garmin was
offering rebates on handheld GPS units at the show. Found a seller who would
ship a 296 to me to avoid the $105 FL sales tax, gave me $400 on trade in of
my 295, and Garmin gave me $100 rebate. I finally have a new 296 that I have
been thinking about since I flew with Cappy soon after he bought one. Was
wishing I had it in the airplane with the towers data base when flying at
1000 feet back to Alma/Bacon County!

Had a great time at S & F. Great to see a number of you that stopped by as I
kept station on Auto row answering questions. I flew down on Sunday morning from
Goosecreek. Lifted off at 0920 here and touched down at Lakeland at 1220
exactly 3 hours later with 15 gallons left on board - tail winds are nice.
Didn't know whether I would still be here to fly back on Sunday after the horrific
lightening storm that occurred Saturday night. I'm sure I've been closer
and counted more lightening strikes as I huddled in my tent about 10 ft from a
tree - but, can't remember when{:>).
Took off at 1010 Sunday morning. Had a twin that started rolling before me, caught
him just past the end of the runway and found myself pulling ahead and outclimbing
him. But - it was an older twin - not one of the turbine types {:>).
Climbed up to 9500 MSL where you could see forever with the snow white tops
down around 4000msl. Only other aircraft I saw was a Lear jet a couple thousand
feet above me. Flew non-stop back to Goosecreek landing at 1345 - had a bit
of a head wind on return. Nice to see that the hangar was still there!!
