Sometime I would love to talk with you about this option ... I would love to

I haven't shopped hard for one in a couple months, but this is the one I
looked at last. It's a couple steps above what I have already, and they
have a variety of lenses & filters available.

Len,
I am going to be looking into this prety soon as well.
Maybe we can approach it at the same time. One thing yu **MIGHT** want to do
now while your plane is down is to make sure that the rudder cap is
removeable via screws and nutplates. Mine current is rivetted in and I need
to address that.

I just started construction on my -7 empennage yesterday and I'm interested
in the tail cam as well. Is there anything I should do now to make it easier
to wire later, besides the removable rudder cap?

Len and James......well, Larry too.......
My fiberglass top of the vertical stab is mounted permanently too...
isn't there another place to mount a cam that would be cool too...
Dan C......has one mounted in the cockpit somewhere, seems like that would
be worlds easier to do as well. You would see what the pilot sees.
Don't get me wrong........Larry's is the coolest thing I've ever seen, but
easier would be ok with me. Heck......I still can't program my VCR........

I have a mount for camera in the RV6. It is OK but not the same as what
Larry has.
I think having the vertical stab mount as an option is the best way. You can
always do the inside the cockpit later.

Ron,
The following was just posted as part of this thread:
http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=7247
it works better than you might think
--------
I had the chance to fly an O-235 powered RV-9A off and on for about 18
months and learned to really like the airplane. As with any RV, you make
engine choices based, no so much on the airplane as the job you will be
asking it to do.
118 hp was good enough to give the 990 lb airplane good take off and
climb and excellent cruise. I'd quite commonly cruise 155-160 mph, which
I though was pretty darn good for that hp -- especially considering that
every other airplane I'd flown with the same engine was lucky to break
100.
I may have to rethink the fuel burn a little but if that holds up, my
dream of a 175 mph RV on only 135 hp sounds like a possibility, more so
since I won't have the nose wheel to slow me down.
Bill

Ron,
All I know is what I've been told by another guy who has an O-290-D2
powered RV-9 (Tail wheel), like what I'm building. His empty weight is
998, and I suspect mine will be a bit higher.
Van's lists the cruise speed for this combination as 175 mph. From what
I keep hearing, Van's numbers are usually on the mark.
Also, the prop makes a big difference. Craig Catto cut one for me that
he suspects will get me to 180 top speed.
With all that background info, I sure am keeping my fingers crossed for
a 75% power 175 mph cruise. The GPH thing, well that may be a bit
optimistic but then again, I'll be burning regular unleaded in that 80
octane, low compression engine

I was told by many people including the folks at the EAA that handle the
autogas STC for certified planes, that with my 0-320 160 HP engine I
would
need at least 93 Octane autofuel or av gas. I ran 87 in it for a month
or so
when I got it and at times I could hear some pinging so the 93 makes
sence
to me. No pinging or other issues with the 93.
Bill, off topic but do you really think your bird will go that fast on
that
engine and with that fuel burn? I have had 2 other planes with 0-290
engines and both burned between 6-7 gallons per hour at best. In my RV-4
I
am burning nearly 7 gallons per hour going 170 mph.

You might consider enlarging the tooling holes in the VS a little and
installing some grommets or snap bushings. Leaving string in there to pull
wires through isn't necessary. You can feed it through with some hinge pin
just as easy.

I think the VS mount is primo, but others would be fun to experiment with
too. Wingtip, landing light, wheel pant, HS, etc.
My biggest regret on the VS mounting is not making it more serviceable. The
tip is removeable, but the camera is mounted in microballons. Makes
upgrading or tweaking (I think my focus is a little off...) difficult to say
the least.

this Saturday, April, 29 from 10-3. Rain date is Sunday, April 30. A youth
group from a local church will be selling soft drinks, dogs, burgers, etc for
those inclined to boost their cholesterol level.
For info about Eastover Air Ranch, see http://www.airnav.com/airport/6NC3
Note: The CTAF is 122.9.
Hope to see some RV's again this year.
