Great footage on the low level jet training. Been there done that, what a
rush!!. Aileron rolls at 100 feet at 500 knots was my favorite. Flying
through the desert canyons below the tops with the rocks a couple hundred
feet away from the canopy gave quite a ground rush. I never saw a cactus
once while flying the A-7/F-16. Just not enough time to process such fine
details.

Subject: | the fly-in that wasn't/Lennish wx |
Well, the weekend certainly turned out differently than I anticipated. We breathed
a collective sigh of relief once the no-go decision was made on the fly-in,
looked around and realized we weren't half as cleaned up and ready as we had
wanted to be, sat back and watched God water the grass. And water, and water
some more.
By this morning, we were under a county-wide flood warning and the river had risen from 1.6 feet of lazy clear water (1.8 feet is the minimum for a successful tubing trip and 2.0-2.2 is ideal for a gentle ride) to 11-plus feet of coffee-colored torrent. Look here to see what I mean: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/gauges/id/589/
The island off the end of the runway was half-submerged when I looked this morning.
Unfortunately, the half that's under water includes the (former) site of
the firewood pile, the fire ring, and the brand new picnic table we bought and
placed there Friday afternoon before the fly-in. No one saw this coming. I
saw no sign of the table when I checked; perhaps it lodged in the trees before
the river could carry it to Richmond, and we can yet recover it. Shucks, that
was a pressure-treated, Sikens-preserved piece of work. I had intended to
anchor it in concrete footings, but not until the season for flooding this fall.
Got caught pants-down this time! The dealer will wonder why I want to buy
another one of his tables so soon.
The manual labor I did all week, getting the old pressure-treated deck replaced
with Veranda and installing the Amish gazebo kit, has left me practically unable
to move without Motrin; I'm a poster child for the ravages of age. Now I
understand why the Army recruiter who called to talk to my son a few years back,
laughed when I asked if I, at age 46, could enlist and fight Jihadis. I'm
trying to imagine a platoon of fifty-somethings on an extended march and bivouac,
much less in combat for more than a few minutes, wondering if they should
surrender when the ibuprofen is exhausted, or wait till the ammo is also depleted.
I don't know how the soldiers of old did it, soldiering on amidst all that
adversity and privation, but it must've hurt miserably.
The July 4 weekend will probably be really nice conditions for flying, tubing,
grilling and everything else summerlike, but I have a college orientation for
my youngest to attend on June 30 and the following day my oldest son and wife
are relocating to Farmville, VA, so wifey and I get to become furniture movers
for a weekend. Pass the Motrin again.
I do have this hope: when July 8th rolls around, we'll be better-rested and more
at ease about having guests descend. You'd think we might be getting the hang
of this by now, but it still amazes me how much prep goes into just keeping
the place half-presentable. We're not trying to impress anyone, but we want
it ready and set for our friends when they finally arrive.
I'll keep everyone posted. No need to RSVP this time; we were expecting about
15 planes last week, and will shop accordingly this time, which will be close
enough. I get to eat the left-overs anyhow, so no complaints here.
Fly safe, everybody.

I might be there too, although if it was like the engine unhanging, seemed
there was too many people... I could come out just to let Tad and Ed bum
smokes off me, that would probably help more than anything else I can do!

Creek indians. Hmmm. If that's the derrivation of the expression, then I just
learnt somethin'! Neat, and it makes sense...
If the Creeks don't rise, the lawyers stay out of it and the Pawnee don't Sioux,
we'll have us a fly-in in two weeks.
(Thought I'd let you "brave" a pun or two),

PS. The river's up to 13 feet now, and hopes are fading for recovering my picnic
table.
