Quick note to congratulate Falcon Flight/Team RV/Palmetto/SoCal and all else participating for the excellent formations Tuesday- you guys really raised the bar and stood out from the rest of the formations as an example of "how it's done"! If evidence is needed, I did get some fair fotos from show center and can fwd to Kahuna as testimony for a job well done! Sure looks like I need to practice, practice, practice... In a message dated 7/28/2006 3:18:48 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Daniel.Kight@shawinc.com writes: Wow, what a great trip!!! The Palmetto Wing (Speedy, Ken, James, Ron, and Len - from North and South Carolina) made it into SQI Friday about dark. We picked our way around storms and low ceilings, and had to double back land a couple of times, but finally, the sky cleared, and the last half hour we flew in the most incredible sunset! The air was butter smooth as we made a couple of passes before pitching out to land. Of course, everyone had left the airport already and missed our arrival, but it's a flight we will always remember. Saturday was another landmark day - I led Gunnbody, Jarhead, and Condor on a practice flight, and Gunnbody officially recommended me for a flight lead check ride. The second flight of the day was for keeps, and it was a pleasure leading Jarhead, Gunnbody, and Taco with Falcon evaluating as a fluid -5. The flight went well, and after the debrief, Falcon gave me the seal of approval. Lead sucks....no,seal of seal of approval. Lea Congratulations to Checker, who also got his lead card, and to Len Leggett and Ron Schrek who are now card carrying wingmen! Great job, guys....Woo Hoo!! The rest of the day was spent learning and practicing tactical formation work, then we adjourned to the restaurant for a great dinner of "Chicken George" (the house specialty). Sunday we briefed and flew a practice VLF (Very Large Formation), then ate lunch while watching the air race participants streak past the turn point. Salty, I saw you come by in the "Flamin' 8" and was rooting for you. Congratulations on your 3rd place finish! The flight into OSH went as briefed, except for the Cessna that came through the middle of our VLF on left base. That was....umm..was....umm..<WBwas....umm.....interesting...in Monday was spent doing the usual OSH stuff - looking at airplanes, and spending money. I bought a new turn coordinator to replace the one that went belly up a while back, and I finally broke down and bought a Trio autopilot head to replace my old Navaid Devices unit. (A Flight Lead has to have a good autopilot, right honey?) Tuesday morning, Falcon led us in a 15 ship VLF and we got lots of compliments (and photos) from the folks on the ground. The afternoon was more looking and spending (They had Phillips 20w-50 oil on sale for $25/case, so I picked up a couple). Wednesday morning it was time to go home. Ken, Len, Ron G. and I headed south and hugged the shore of Lake Michigan to avoid storms west of Chicago. We flew over Meigs field, and it's all grass now - all the pavement is gone. Very sad. The weather improved and the flight was going well until Len's engine started missing at 20 second intervals. We all landed at Ron's home airport of Hamilton, OH and spent several hours isolating the problem to a bad hall effect sensor on his Lightspeed ignition. Fortunately, Ron also had a Lightspeed on his -8, and loaned Len his module to get home. It sure is nice to be traveling with friends when you have a mechanical problem, isn't it Len? The rest of the trip home was uneventful (except for having to listen to Kahuna brag about his amazing speed and fuel burn at FL19!! Sigh.... A Flight Lead should have a bigger engine, right honey?) All in all, it was one of the best trips to OSH I have made, largely because of the company. It's an honor and privelege to fly with all of you. --> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" <Larry@BowenAero.com> How was the trip home, Tad? I neglected to monitor button one on the way, sorry. We stayed underneath 2/3's of the way. Stopped at De Kalb, IL, east of Chicago to check wx and fill up ($4.51), then over Danville, IL and stopped at Louisville, KY for a break and top-off. The TRW depiction on the 396 was a huge help. Without it I could have easily seen a repeat of last year where it took three days to get home. Anyway, near the mtns we where able to climb to 9500 and saw 204 KTS across the ground. Yipee! Another great trip in the RV...... - Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com ________________________________ From: tadsargent [mailto:tadsargent@bellsouth.net] Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 8:16 AM To: rvsoutheast-list@matronics.com Subject: Re: RVSouthEast-List: CONGRATS to Len and Ron!!!!!! Thanks Mark. It was nice to look over and see you waving as we sat waiting to take to the runway. Also nice to see you "fly by" at SQI in the race!
