I am somewhat interested. I have a lot of interest in these long range
trips, and have crossed the country several times. However, I am more
interested in the flying than the ground touristing. E.g. More air time and
less ground time. My wife does not like to fly much anyway, so would be by
myself (which is one reason why). One possibility is to join you on the way
out, and then return sooner by myself.
Is anyone on this list possibly interested in a flying trip to Alaska?
Or, a shorter trip to the Bahamas in December?

PENSACOLA, Fla.(AP) Ever watched "Top Gun" and wondered if you had what it
takes to evade surface-to-air missiles in an F-14 Tomcat? An exhibit that
opened this week at the National Museum of Naval Aviation is giving would-be
flyboys the chance to climb into the cockpit of a real F-14 military
training simulator and experience a 20-minute joyride.
Flyers can grab the flight stick and experience mock air-to-air combat,
practice carrier landings or simply cruise over Las Vegas, Iraq, Miramar,
Calif., and other simulated sites.
"Everyone can be a hero in a simulator," said retired Marine Col. Deej
Kiely, a fighter pilot in Vietnam and the museum's spokesman. "If they are
proficient enough, they can mess around with the radar and lock up targets,
they can interact with each other. I think for these purposes it's close
enough to the real thing."
The only other F-14 simulators open to the public are at Patuxent River
Naval Air Museum in Maryland, said Dave Kinney, owner of Eaglesims. The San
Clemente, Calif.-based company converts retired military trainers and
aircraft for public use.
"You get them and save them. They are rare pieces of art," Kinney said. "The
experience is priceless for an airplane junkie who has dreamed for a long
time about what it's like to sit in a Tomcat with all the actual controls."
Workers spent many hours working out how to keep the maximum number of
levers, switches and alarms active in the four simulators while ensuring the
experience would still be fun for those who have never sat in a cockpit
before, Kinney said.
The exhibit coincides with last month's retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, the
fighter jet immortalized in the 1986 movie "Top Gun," and includes plaques
and patches from actual Tomcat squadrons.
Visitors sit through a video and "cockpit orientation training" before
climbing into the cockpit and watching the action on a video screen about as
big as a laptop computer's. The experience costs $20.

Not any more. Had a day's delay going up and coming back, but it was a good
trip over all. Working on a summary on my website. Should be up later
today.

I'll check it out. Flying to AK is definitely on my to-do list. Bahamas is
up there too, but I'll have to overcome the psychological block about the 70
miles over water......

PENSACOLA, Fla.(AP) Ever watched "Top Gun" and wondered if you had
what it
takes to evade surface-to-air missiles in an F-14 Tomcat? An exhibit
that
opened this week at the National Museum of Naval Aviation is giving
would-be
flyboys the chance to climb into the cockpit of a real F-14 military
training simulator and experience a 20-minute joyride.
Flyers can grab the flight stick and experience mock air-to-air
combat,
practice carrier landings or simply cruise over Las Vegas, Iraq,
Miramar,
Calif., and other simulated sites.
"Everyone can be a hero in a simulator," said retired Marine Col. Deej
Kiely, a fighter pilot in Vietnam and the museum's spokesman. "If they
are
proficient enough, they can mess around with the radar and lock up
targets,
they can interact with each other. I think for these purposes it's
close
enough to the real thing."
The only other F-14 simulators open to the public are at Patuxent
River
Naval Air Museum in Maryland, said Dave Kinney, owner of Eaglesims.
The San
Clemente, Calif.-based company converts retired military trainers and
aircraft for public use.
"You get them and save them. They are rare pieces of art," Kinney
said. "The
experience is priceless for an airplane junkie who has dreamed for a
long
time about what it's like to sit in a Tomcat with all the actual
controls."
Workers spent many hours working out how to keep the maximum number of
levers, switches and alarms active in the four simulators while
ensuring the
experience would still be fun for those who have never sat in a
cockpit
before, Kinney said.
The exhibit coincides with last month's retirement of the F-14 Tomcat,
the
fighter jet immortalized in the 1986 movie "Top Gun," and includes
plaques
and patches from actual Tomcat squadrons.
Visitors sit through a video and "cockpit orientation training" before
climbing into the cockpit and watching the action on a video screen
about as
big as a laptop computer's. The experience costs $20.

Looks like we will be home on the 18th now. Had to slip our trip by two days to
accomodate our cousins in Oregon, so we won't make the fly-in at Santa Terresa.
Maybe next year.

My wife and I are in of an Alaskan trip, at least that is what we have
been talking about since we started this project. Now to finish up my
-9 and make it a reality. That will leave her with only one state left
for her to visit.

Larry Bowen and I have both been talking about Alaska. Everything is
open and everyone can make it what they want.

I am somewhat interested. I have a lot of interest in these long range
trips, and have crossed the country several times. However, I am more
interested in the flying than the ground touristing. E.g. More air time
and
less ground time. My wife does not like to fly much anyway, so would be
by
myself (which is one reason why). One possibility is to join you on the
way
out, and then return sooner by myself.
Is anyone on this list possibly interested in a flying trip to Alaska?
Or, a shorter trip to the Bahamas in December?

Cappy and Lynne are planning a "Trip of Trips" to Yellowstone National
Park
(KCOD), in May or June. Altogether, approximately 10 days and 18 hours
flying time. We are planning a stop at Mount Rushmore (KRAP) and a
flight
over the Devils Tower in WO on the way to or from Yellowstone.

I am in desperate need of getting my RV-10 IFR worthy. Does anyone know of
a good place to get the XPDR and static checks completed in South GA or
North Fl? I have a tentative appointment with Stark avionics where I bought
by radios, but it's not until 24 Oct and a little far away. The guys at
Macon are out for 2 weeks.
Thanks,
Marcus

Subject: | Goldsboro Wings Weekend, RV Seminar, Nov 4th |
--> RVSouthEast-List message posted by: "Larry Bowen" <Larry@BowenAero.com>
In response to the email below, the following folks showed an interest back
in August:
Bill Repucci, Ron Schreck, Steve Glasgow, Denis Millsap, Dale Ensing, Paul
D. Franzon & Len Leggette.
We are less than a month away now. Is everyone still in?
I have a slight complication in that my conditional inspection is due by
then end of Oct, so unless I get cracking on it, my plane will likely be in
pieces in November.

Aug 5th:
I got a call from the FAA the other day. Before I could voice my alibi, he
told me it was regarding the Wings Weekend on November 4th at Goldsboro, NC.
He's looking for a couple volunteers to do presentation on the RV's and what
it takes to build and fly them. Sort of like the presentation Len and I did
for the Winston-Salem airport group a couple months ago. I told him I would
ask the group if anyone was available/interested. It would be a 40-50
minute presentation in a classroom type environment. Maybe a slideshow,
questions from the attendees, etc. I'm thinking 3-4 people who are well
into their kit or flying would be good.
Who would be willing to participate?
