Gentlemen,
If I could chime in here for a second... I'm a good way from being ready to
buy my GPS, but I was half way planning on the 396 until the 496 came out. The
496 has three features the 396 doesn't.
For the traveler...
(1) It has AOPA's 5300 entry airport directory installed which includes names
and phone numbers of FBO's, restaurants, and hotels.
(2) It has what Garmin calls the "Safe Taxi" feature where you are able to see
your postion on an airport diagram to help prevent runway incursions and,
(3) It has the "Smart Airspace" feature that alerts you to potential airspace
issues based on your altitude.

My chime is to get the Lowrance 2000c it has all these features but weather.
Might I mention the largest screen and it below $900.00 unless you have
settled on the Garmin.
