Subject: RVSouthEast-List: Priming & sealing Cowling
<bertrv6@gmail.com>
Hi:
Still waiting to hear from the list, as to the best way to seal,
and prime
Cowling, to be ready for paint.
Recently I hear one can buy some product at Waltmart, that works
well for Fibe Glass Cowling... I could not find any thing like
that..
What have the list, used to seal the cowling, and what kind or
primer.
Am I correct in saying, that one must First Seal , then add
primer?
Or by adding special kind of primer, would do both?
I know that Van's said use Epoxy mix with Acetone, 50/50
If one do that, then, what, just paint? no primer?
If not then I am sure it has to be sanded, before anything will
adhere there..
And sanding, that mixture, is no an easy job, I have seen
it.....
I really need clarification, with specifics... names brands
etc..
Would be appreciate, your comments.
Bert

Subject: Postpone IAC Chapter 19 - April 14 at Shelby, NC due to weather
Hi Everyone,
Due to weather concerns for tomorrow, we will postpone our
meeting/practice at Shelby, NC. Sorry for this inconvenience but
several of our folks in the western part of NC had conflicts for
tomorrow and the weather also does not appear to be great. Morning may
not have rain but the clouds and ceiling may prohibit any aerobatics.
With Sun N Fun next week, we will have to delay for more than a week. I
will send out a notice if we reschedule.
Thanks,
Larry

Subject: IAC Chapter 19 - April 14 at Shelby, NC
Hi Everyone,
Looking forward seeing you at the Shelby, NC airport (EHO) this coming
Saturday. We plan to begin at 10:00AM, have a brief meeting, practice
time, lunch and depart around 2:00PM.
Devon Raisch, FBO Manager, said he would have someone there to provide
our lunch for donation to a missions project as was provided last year.
In accordance with IAC headquarters, to be covered under our IAC
insurance policy, those wishing to practice aerobatics must have their
airplane tech. inspected as we do at our IAC contests. I have attached
a copy of the Technical Inspection form for those not familiar with it,
so please plan to bring the following:
For the aircraft:
- Airworthiness certificate
- Registration
- Operating limitations (copy OK)
- Weight & balance
- Proof of aircraft current insurance (copy OK)
- Proof of current annual inspection (copy OK)
For the pilot:
- Pilot certificate
- Current medical
- Photo ID
- Current flight review sign off (copy OK)
- IAC card (can join at Shelby)
For the parachute:
- Log of current pack
If weather is questionable, please call the Shelby airport at
704-487-1161 as we will plan to leave information there.
We encourage you to bring a bring a friend and introduce them to this
great sport of aerobatics!
See you on Saturday at Shelby!
Larry

Subject: | Re: Priming & sealing Cowling |
Bert, I'll try to help. I just finished doing this using West Systems
epoxy resin.
When preparing the cowl for painting, two things must be accomplished. 1,
fill all the pin holes. 2, Build up the surface of the fiberglass with
something so that the fiberglass cloth pattern does not show thru the paint.
Especially if the final color will be a dark color.
The first coat of epoxy resin was with no filler and thinned with solvent as
Van's recommends. It was applied with a plastic card (like and old credit
card or hotel pass key) used like a scraper. Just pour on some of the mixed
resin and spread it around the cowl surface with the card laying almost flat
to the surface so that it pushes the resin into the pin holes. Then using
the card, scrape the fiberglass surface to remove all of the excess resin.
(Any excess mixed resin can be applied to the inner surfaces of the cowl to
seal it). After a day or so of drying, lightly sand the surface with #80
aluminum oxide sand paper to remove only the high points on the surface.
Wash the sanding dust off, let it dry well and prepare for the next coat of
resin.
The second coat of resin was not thinned with solvent and had no filler but
applied in the same way. Again sand with the #80 paper after resin has dried
for a day or so. (If the epoxy resin tends to stick to the sand paper rather
than coming off as dust, the resin has not sufficiently cured.)
The first two coats of resin filled the pin holes but more is needed to
build up the surface so that the cloth pattern is covered. To do this I
changed the application method as it is difficult to get a uniform film of
wet resin on the surface without scraping all the resin off using the
plastic card. I used a four inch small diameter paint roller used for smooth
surfaces. You can purchase the paint roller from home supply or paint
stores. ( I found I could use the roller for multiply coats if you clean it
well with lacquer thinner immediately after use. Put some thinner in a metal
pan and roll the roller back and forth to purge the resin from the roller.
Wash roller with dish detergent and water and let dry. This cleaning method
will not completely clean all the resin out of the roller but good enough to
use again since you will be sanding the cured resin.) A friend used a foam
type roller instead of a cloth type roller and said it work well but I am
not sure about cleaning a foam roller with solvent.
Sand the cured resin with #100 aluminum oxide sand paper. Continue with
additional coats of resin until the surface is smooth and you can no longer
see the cloth pattern. I put a filler into the third coat of resin to build
the film thickness and make it easier to sand but found it harder to roll
out smoothly so the remaining coats of resin were without filler. The first
coat of paint should be an epoxy sanding primer followed by a sealing epoxy
primer that will also smooth the surface for the final finish coating.
Preparing the fiberglass parts it is a lot work but doing the job properly
will show in the final coating.
Hope this helps. Not saying this is the way you should do it but this worked
for me. If you are going to have the plane painted by a professional, check
with painter. He may do all this for you as part of the paint job.

Cappy has been busy. See attached Flight Plan.
The plan is to meet up at KSAV and launch at 5 minute intervals.
Day one fuel stop is KLWV. If not meeting up at KSAV you can meet us here.
After fuel and other breaks, launch at 5 minute intervals for KSUX where we
will
overnight. Hotels and cars at Souix City later.
Day two we fly to Mt. Rushmore, fly around it several times then make a fuel
stop at KCUT.
>From KCUT we fly to the Devils Tower, fly around it several times and then
on to
KSHR. Then we fly the NE side of the Bighorn Mts to U68 and follow Bighorn
Lake to
KCOD. This is truly one of the most beautiful places we could ever want to
see.
I have tried to structure the flight plan to in most cases avoid fairly high
terrain,
controlled airspace and MOA's. Also is easy on the bladder, lowest fuel
cost
and best security for overnight.
Plug it into to AOPA's real time planner or whatever you use and let me know
what you think.
Remember to be assured of a hotel room with the group the deadline for in or
out is April 27.
We have rooms for June 9 thru June 12 so if the wither is Lenish on day one
we should still
have time to see all of Yellowstone. If you want, you can leave a day early
or whenever you
have seen enough.
Cappy and Lynne plan to come back the same way along the Bighorn Mts and
then on to
Denver CO, Hobbs NM, Houston TX and back to Charlotte. Tag alongs are
welcome.
Questions, Comments, Suggestions or Kudos are welcome.

Just lurking... sounds like a great trip.
I flew to Yellowstone (Cody) a couple years ago from the southeast. The
drive from Cody to Yellowstone is among the most scenic in the country, also
Teddy Roosevelt has been quoted to say this. There are 2 main routes, one
goes to the east entrance, the other to the north entrance. Both fantastic.

I don't know what map you are looking at? It may be 133 miles to the
center of the park.
But I'm told by several sources including the NPS that Cody is 52 miles
from the East entrance to the park.
You are correct about the mountains. But if you look at the route I
planned, we can safely make
it without going above 7,500. Check WAC CF-17.
The best alternate is the last one you flew over. With legs of 2:06 and
1:48 we can always go back were we
took off last.
See Revision 1 to the Flight Plan. Thanks Rad. Maybe you should bring
him with you Reno.
He needs to see America. God I hope I got the coordinates for Mt.
Rushmore and Devils Tower right.
Does this mean Reno is IN? I hope so!
When are you going to be at Sun N Fun. Randy and I will be there Friday
and Saturday.
Lets all get together.

Quite the ambitious trip, but of course, you da world
traveler anyway. Looks good, I show Cody is 133 road
miles from Y-Stone...2+ hr. drive.
Just lurking... sounds like a great trip.
I flew to Yellowstone (Cody) a couple years ago from the southeast.
The
drive from Cody to Yellowstone is among the most scenic in the
country, also
Teddy Roosevelt has been quoted to say this. There are 2 main routes,
one
goes to the east entrance, the other to the north entrance. Both
fantastic.

I was looking at my 1999 road Atlas showing distance.
Anyway if its that scenic, who cares how long it
takes? Found alt. fuel stops cheaper than a couple of
yours, but who knows in 2 months. I gather you are
out for LAL. We can dub this trip Cappy's Excellent
Adventure. RR

Sounds like you are going to have a great trip.
With luck we might be ready. Today I finished installing the FAB. We
are getting closer to moving it to the airport.

Cappy
