I have to give credit where credit is due, Tad has been using an old
garden tractor to pull his -7A in and out of his hangar. However, I do
think my is, well, sexy. ;)

BTW, the P-mags came back yesterday and I installed them this morning
and flew another 2.1 hours today. I've changed my pre-flight procedure
to include a full power run-up, after doing a mag check. Four engine
starts w/ three flights and so far, so good.

What are the details of the p-mag issue/fix? Will you have p-mags on your
      next RV?

      Larry (and others),

I wired my P-mags per Bob K's diagram in his AeroElectric book. This is
a good logical setup because it allows you to test the P-mags in all
failure modes and when you turn the switch off, it both grounds the
plugs and pulls the power from the P-mags. The manufacture does not
recommend this, rather they would have you just ground the things but
keep the electronics alive. This sounds counterintuitive until you
realize that the ground only grounds the coil pack and not the
      electronics.

The P-mag guys had said they didn't like Bob's wiring diagram but never
explained why or that something bad would happen, so I wired it per Bob.
What I don't like about the manufacture's recommendation is that every
so many flights you are to pull the breaker to test them, prior to shut
down. This is unacceptable to me as you could get back to your plane in
the morning only to find your mags are no longer timed.

What I have done is wired mine per Bob K. and will do a full mag check
before each flight but rather than just powering down after checking the
mags, I will go to full power to make sure it is running smoothly.
(That and keep some timing tools with me at all times.)

Here is what the issue is, as I understand it. On the newer P-mags,
they kept the timing mark in non-volatile memory. Upon power up
(P-mags, not your engine) the timing mark is read into volatile memory
and away you go. When you power them down and back up quickly, you can
overwrite the non-volatile memory with a new timing mark based on where
the crank is at that time. The P-mag guys issued a mandatory SB in late
June but the fix for this was not included. They figured it out just
before OSH and didn't notify anyone about it. Since I moved my fuselage
to the airport on June 30th, I sent my P-mags off for the upgrade then
and the new fix came out afterwards. I sure wish I had known about it
      prior to last weekend.

Would I recommend them, absolutely! They have been VERY responsive to
all issues and I still believe in this product. They are a small
company and as such, I can understand them missing an occasional
communication. However, I hope it doesn't happen again.

These P-mags are going to spoil me. My O-290 was last overhauled in '59
and put in storage. I just topped it (inspecting it for rust while I
had the cylinders off. There was no rust.), hung it on the -9, and took
it to the airport. Oh, I did install a yellow tagged carb so I knew
that was good. This thing started on the third prop blade and has done
so every time I hit the starter. That is all because of the P-mags. It
starts more like a car than an airplane. Hit the button and it lights
      right off.

      Bill
